72 panels of 8x3 hand painted and then pasted. They worked on sections at a time so therefore have not seen the image complete before it hits the wall....pretty impressive.

AMEN!
Please keep them coming - really like seeing the process behind creation. That Faile is incredible.

Tate Modern π¬π§ London, by dotdot on May 21, 2008 20:40:43 GMT 1, i was up there this afternoon - oops got sunburnt - took quite a few photos and got behind the fences to catch sight of as much as possible.
I met up with os gemeos and had a chat about what they've been up to... and what's next etc. To be honest - they couldn't have been nicer to a mere normal type.
It was spooky everyone seemed to know them - all these folks from Brazil kept coming over to have their photos taken.... they're stars over there.(not forgetting the tv crew doing in interview with them for national TV...! no less! )
Anyway that was part of my day - will get the photos up somewhere at some point - btw best vantage point could be the platform at blackfriars...
oh and to cap it off.... while i was hanging around ( you couldn't make this up).... a local from the block of flats( near the founder pub... ) came over.... to speak with a tate pr rep.... moaning about the scaffolding going up for the show (XFM?) on sat....
"that scaffolding is not on tate land - you know i think it should be taken down - now ! ... let me speak to the director of the tate - now..."
she had to take him seriously... so he did speak to the "BOSS"... I was ...and everyone else was in fits.... people ! ... nimby ! etc...
...cheers - it's been a long day time for a bit of toast.

Tate Modern π¬π§ London, by gozgoz on May 23, 2008 10:15:59 GMT 1, i dont get that line by Blu. And i guess i dont know enough about this and i dont have enough background on why he wrote that but it seems like poor taste to me. Nissan comes along, sponsors this event, working with tate and allowing and sponsoring all these artists to paint on the tate, and you go write something like that?!?
bite the hand that feeds, no?

Blu didn't know about the sponsorship deal when he accepted the invitation from the Tate. When he found out he wasn't happy about it. Studiocromie can probably fill in the details.

if he wasnt happy, he could have backed out, no? he could have just not done it. if he was so unhappy about it.
besides, he shld have been unhappy with tate for not telling him, as opposed to Nissan, who probably provided him with the paint etc etc.

youre clearly upset by this. do you own Nissan? calm down dear its only commercialism.

Tate Modern π¬π§ London, by doublehelix on May 23, 2008 12:19:22 GMT 1, I don't agree with Ben Lewis, it's fine to say that he doesn't like the artwork but to then go on to essentially exclude it from the cannon of art is arrogant. Although I do very much enjoy Ben's art docs on BBC 4, the Art Safari about Maurizio Cattelan was genius.

Ben Lewis might think its dumb but doesn't really explain why.
"It's telling that people who take this art seriously usually avoid thinking too hard about the subject matter."
Surely the exact opposite is true.

it would explain NW`s current fame and high prices though

Tate Modern π¬π§ London, by cubrik on May 25, 2008 18:25:45 GMT 1, Banksy was unavailable for comment, but a source close to him was as cagey as the Tate's curator, first denying that he'd been approached and then adding, perhaps a little more truthfully: "Isn't the exhibition sponsored by Nissan? Street Art is not supposed to be sponsored."
Banksy's absence does not reflect well on the museum or the artist. The Tate's first ever Street Art exhibition should undoubtedly have featured Britain's world-renowned leading artist of that genre.
Banksy, with his unprecedented public profile, his use of the British media and his commercial ventures - like the exhibition he held in Los Angeles where he sold millions of dollars of his art to Hollywood celebs, more on which later - has no good reason not to play ball with a public institution-which has done so much to bring art to a wider public. I'm not Banksy's biggest fan - but I missed him.
i wonder who source close to him is??

Tate Modern π¬π§ London, by mp on May 26, 2008 14:37:40 GMT 1, Not sure if this has been discussed but artists Eltono and Nuria (who have put together the walking tour on the Tate modern) left 49 originals on the streets and parks around the Tate...the idea was that if you found one you could keep it and they would sign them...
Did anyone get lucky?
Apparently they had a few left for today but i am not sure they will do it with the rain...

Tate Modern π¬π§ London, by Prescription Art on May 27, 2008 2:17:18 GMT 1, I took the Tate's walking tour on Saturday, and a thoroughly enjoyable stroll it was too... taking you through parts of London you'd likely never otherwise visit.
It reminded me of when I recreated Bill Dummond's walks in '45' where he wrote his name 'BILL' on a page of the A to Z, then followed the course of his name as best he could. It's very interesting finding unseen alleyways, churches, building sites & greens. This seemed rather out of place in darkest South London:
The art itself was pleasant enough, but the only really outstanding piece was this one by Spok. A superb piece of work:
There are loads of El Tono's about... and though I've long admired his stuff, with so many about they're by themselves not really reward enough for a 10 minute walk to find it.
Other artists are 3TTMan:
Nuria:
Nano 4814:
It's also worth mentioning that El Tono & Nuria are leaving original works on wood along the route. If you find one you can take it back to the Tate, where the artists will sign them, then return them to you at a later date. I didn't find anything myself, but saw a couple returning to the Tate with placards slung over their shoulders.
