MR BRAINWASH @ OPERA GALLERY LONDON, by tobaum on Sept 25, 2011 12:47:03 GMT 1, So funny seeing how upset some people get when an Artist does well whom they don't like ;D Try and think of it as if this was in the music industry I guess Justin Bieber is making loads of money, and I don't like his music, but why would I let it bother me? good luck to him!
You cannot compare Bieber to Brainwash... I don't like Bieber's music but the kid work hard basicly since he is born, he do his thing, nothing to do with some kind of hype of being an artist. And weither you like Bieber or not, you cannot deny he is talented. On the other hand you have Brainwash with no idea of what is his thing until he met some artists and thought "oh that's cool, I want to be one of this guys"... How? Easy, I just have to copy...
One more thing is everybody can buy a Bieber song for $0.99 but Brainwash is totally overated...

MR BRAINWASH @ OPERA GALLERY LONDON, by eschiff on Sept 25, 2011 13:26:35 GMT 1, i've never seen someone make bob marley out of broken records before. if someone could point me towards that it would be great.
also, those whinging about photoshop, isn't that how you make a stencil? Don't you get a picture, pixelate it, put b&w filters on, cut it out etc? If you don't like photoshop, do you not like stencilled art?

i agree, of course. but the majority of the street art that's discussed, bought and sold on this forum is photoshop stencils.
also, still waiting for someone to show me a broken record piece

Theres a massive difference between a good stencil artist who uses photoshop to create art, and someone using photoshop to apply easy filters. Sorry esch, but its views like that which allow MBW and similar 'artists' to do what they do. Take an image, apply filters, print it, call yourself an artist.
IMO.
Oh, sorry i missed out one vital stage of cutting out a version and spraying it on canvas, cos then you can call yourself urban....

The majority do it because its the easy option or/and do not have the required drawing skills
As for the record piece, the helpers may have had one original idea. But that isnt going to change my mind on the rest of what is released under MBW's name

MR BRAINWASH @ OPERA GALLERY LONDON, by bullet on Sept 25, 2011 15:26:19 GMT 1, Photoshop is just a tool, like a pencil or paintbrush. Its just a modern way of doing it. You can re-create works of art in photoshop, but it does not mean they are any lesser quality or skilled.
Guarantee you that people like faile use it for collages and Banksy use it, purely because it makes their lives easier.
Banksy certainly uses it as you can see where he has applied textures to make things look sprayed.
People can go on all they like about something being photoshopped, but that is what most people use these days to create prints in particular as it is just the way things are done.
Its the end result - not the process you need to be talking about.

MR BRAINWASH @ OPERA GALLERY LONDON, by Finsbury on Sept 25, 2011 15:40:55 GMT 1, Well said Finsbury (Park )! Buy what you like and you will not go wrong. Yes, we all like to see what we bought 'rise in price', but if you did not like it in the first place, then don't moan! PS: I was at the Emirates today - a good win. We played well in the 2nd half ;D
Cheers Dappy, was up there too and came home smiling and not sulking around the mrs today which makes a change! Back to the MBW debate though, i suppose this is slightly like football as in i don't bang on about how much i f**king detest spurs, utd, chelski or city, nor do i care for how they go about their business.

banksy may use it some times, but do you think he needs a MAC to make all of his stencils ? I think not, you only have to look at his sketch book stuff to see he is more than capable of drawing his own image, or tracing over found images with a pencil
why would banksy make photoshop drips when a real can, can do a better job ?

Did not say he would. But he would definitely scan those drips and put them into photoshop - because you need to convert those real drips to work on screens and in a format which can be printed.
I dont think the talk here is about originals... it's about prints.
Photoshop will always be involved somewhere and its good for tidying stuff up quickly.

I disagree on the process. I don't have a problem with the use of Photoshop but I do think the process is as important as the final outcome. Check out the Weiwei video of the making of the sunflower seeds and tell me that doesn't make you appreciate the final product more.
As for MBW I personally most of his stuff boring. Someday I will buy a print or something as a souvenir of the his rise and fall (coming anytime now). Why because I love the story of him and his process. But I'll wait till prices are about 10% of the current prices.

Clearly he was doing vinyl portraits back then - and that's just some artist I found after 5 minutes of googling.
