FS: BAST Original, KAWS, Beejoir, Stinkfish +, by mmmike on Feb 16, 2012 2:29:20 GMT 1, Just measured the BAST for someone and its actually bigger than I thought. 24" x 22" on wood and a 1/1. First to offer ยฃ2500 delivered to the UK gets it. Bast is a true gent to his fans, if not the best, deliberately underpricing work he sells direct from his site or (in the case of this piece you're selling at triple the price) direct from his studio, to "put something out there for the fans who ain't got the coin to own a gallery piece". To see this so blatantly (and regularly) abused by you, and your cohorts, is truly saddening.
Almost as bad as charging overseas customers 20% more for purchases. Counting on people not knowing how VAT works.

FS: BAST Original, KAWS, Beejoir, Stinkfish +, by RPM on Feb 16, 2012 3:07:10 GMT 1, I would add that owning a piece of art or selling one carries a responsibility. As I said earlier this situation is never ideal and I have tried by not putting images on the Internet to do this sensitively.
Not trying to start a war of words, but since you made the above statement, I must ask - does the "sensitivity" re posting images of works being sold on the secondary market only apply to Bast? What about the other artists (especially those in this very same thread) that you have re-sold works from and have provided images of the pieces? Why is this particular Bast piece so unique?
I agree with others that have stated that it is your collection and yours to do whatever it is you wish to do with it. I personally don't feel any indebtedness to the artist or gallery for any piece of art that I have purchased. Am I appreciative - most definitely. But I owe them nothing, just as they owe me nothing.
H, I don't know you and I have no issue with you personally or otherwise. But I have noticed on this and other forums people calling into question your constant purchasing/reselling of works. Again, not my place to say what you should do with your money or your personal property. But that being said, I do think your statement above re "responsibility" rings a bit hollow.
Nevertheless, I sincerely wish you luck with the sales.

FS: BAST Original, KAWS, Beejoir, Stinkfish +, by mmmike on Feb 16, 2012 3:26:00 GMT 1, Harveyn has done a lot for this forum. All I have ever seen from Laz has been them using the forum for free advertising. Advertising which has included not honoring the price they advertised at least once, and always deceptively charging overseas buys a 20% premium. Laz should look in the mirror before criticizing the selling practices of others.
A bit ridiculous if you ask me. I was on the fence, but based on the outsiders most recent posts here I think I have pretty much decided I won't buy from Laz ever again.
Harveyn keep doing what you are doing.

Oh and an original being moved on three times from purchase in just 6 months - is not a good look whatever anyone blithely announces. But I'm definitely not without sin.

So Laz has refunded you the 20%? You know the VAT is included in their advertised price. If not they charged you 20% more than locals.

FS: BAST Original, KAWS, Beejoir, Stinkfish +, by Deleted on Feb 16, 2012 4:13:52 GMT 1, From this thread, I gather the following:
1. Don't let interns communicate publicly for your gallery 2. Don't let lowly-paid gallery urchins communicate publicly for your gallery, they take themselves way, way too seriously, probably a defense mechanism to make up for their very low salaries. I find 'gallery guys' to be a way more disagreeable species when compared to the 'gallery girl'. They tend to be angrier, and don't even have the advantage of being very attractive to about 90% of the art-buying audience. 3. Don't think you are holier-than-thou when you sell art for a living, doesn't matter if you are a gallery, agent, artist, whatever. At the end of the day, it's the money and always will be the money. You are not Darger.

Not to derail this somewhat amusing thread, but is it considered a matter of course that VAT is included in the prices that a gallery lists for artwork in the UK, or only if it is stated elsewhere that the prices are VAT inclusive?

Quite happy for people who are members to have rows - discussions on prices etc However think it is a bit much for a gallery to be accusing people. Regardless of who is selling or what and what price. # Also think regardless of the above and a gallery making a comment they were not the most polite posts i have seen
lets get some prices!!!! Name and shame time

Is he giving works away? No. But really who would? If we all purchased quality items as he purchases then why should we...
For those wishing to buy the best quality Bast at cost, then you should have!

I didn't read the all thread but I think we should have a thread naming galleries charging VAT when shipping abroad. Some galleries (if not most of them) just don't care and usually reply by a "NO".
Great thread guys !! Very amused to see that art collectors are behaving like flippers, most of the guys here are overpricing their artwork or starting sale thread with "best offer"... Luckily, there are still some good guys here who post prices closed to cost or slightly above cost because they are real art lovers; I would personally do the same.

We know its history and so do you and your friend, albeit disingenuously presented here. We were speaking on behalf of our artist and friend, Bast. We really have nothing further to say on the matter. HAHAHAHA are you f**ing joking me right now? ? This has got nothing to do with me but I am so appalled by what I'm reading that i have to stick up for harveyn... Who the hell do you think you are as a gallery to come on here and have a go at people like harvey for selling on pieces of art that THEY own??? You should be embarrassed by how unprofessional your being right now. You as an employee wouldnt even have a job, let alone be sitting infront of a computer posting on this forum if your boss Mr Laz hadnt of done the exact same thing rinsing the market with banksy pieces...last time I checked you were selling signed banksys PRINTS at 15k plus... Please dont ever come on here again telling people what they should or should not be doing!!!! especially with what your entire business model is and has been based on in the past!
^^^^^ what he said. I am totally appalled with the action of whichever member of the LAZ team posted above. In what world do these people think we live? when a car dealer sells someone a car does he follow them up to check the dont sell it on at a profit/ loss / trade etc? By the way....a great Banksy example available here for a snip www.theoutsiders.net/item/2681,nola
maybe check out your own website and take a breather before you start sniping and finger pointing again

p.s. you just lost one buyer of todays Bast drop, congrats

FS: BAST Original, KAWS, Beejoir, Stinkfish +, by eschiff on Feb 16, 2012 11:01:45 GMT 1, i have no problem with Laz commenting, it's a public forum and they have as much a right to as myself, a mod or an artist.
to be honest, in my dealing with neil he seems like a nice dude and whenever i've worked (read bought) with Laz they've been great, so i don't have a horse in this race. But to blast a gallery for stating their opinion seems short sighted and misguided.
sure, plenty of galleries say how much they hate the secondary market when they in fact are a secondary market...that amuses me though, and it's the nature of the business. Galleries (the good ones) also work to develop talent, create a broad base for their artwork and grow them as a brand. The reason they get pissed off with flippers (as Laz stated) is it creates an artificial bubble. THis is obviously bad for a gallery but it's also worse for collectors!

Don't you abuse it on a daily basis? Doesn't the comment of Bast indicate that he dislike you as the outsiders much more than possibly any big time collector out there. And about triple the price...didn't you just release a print by Brett Amory while better prints are available from his site for a fraction of your price?
While your gallery simply turned into a cash making machine, Harveyns behaviour clearly states his love for art and the ambition to build up a stunning collection.
I'd be simply ashamed going at people when you, as a gallery, exploit the market, the art and the peoples love for art more than anyone ever could as a person. There a great galleries out there, no doubt about that, but it is a nice gesture that 'the outsiders' post themselves that they don't belong to that category.

Just for shits and giggles? Again, i have no idea, always been pleasant with neil...but the outsiders doesn't comment on every sale thread, they're clearly not against making money on selling art, perhaps there is a back story to this piece that neil may not even be aware of?

FS: BAST Original, KAWS, Beejoir, Stinkfish +, by johnnyh on Feb 16, 2012 11:56:20 GMT 1, Esciff it sounds to me like the Gallery are not happy with Bast as he sells privately and obviously he has a deal where he controls this. Deputy I would agree with you but if you go back a couple of weeks Harvey/Neil posted two beautiful Bast pieces he bought direct so I understand him moving this on if he does not want 3.
It will not be moving again as i really like it so it will stay in my collection.
Now as to the Gallery's point. Bast may have sold at a low price or even given it away. that is his business. Like a gift print lets say given by an artist if it makes open sale it obviously has a value. He / They acussed Harvey/Neil but they are selling a canvass at ยฃ6K which is a lot and in my book not as nice as the piece harvey/Neil was selling.
So I do not blame Harvey/Neil for not giving it away and I think for a 1/1 see pic below at that price I am happy thanks. When i compare other things I have seen for the price I think I have got a bit of a bargain actually.
Also regardless of the right and wrongs of galleries opinions I do not think if anyone reads their post that they were not rude. I think its pretty daft to be that rude regardless.
Anyway here it is:

Esciff it sounds to me like the Gallery are not happy with Bast as he sells privately and obviously he has a deal where he controls this. FS: BAST Original, KAWS, Beejoir, Stinkfish +, by Harveyn on Feb 16, 2012 13:01:57 GMT 1, It would be a pleasant surprise if a few more people on this thread disengaged their moral outrage and actually had an opinion on the point raised about the movement of a very new piece, the message this sends to the artist and actually to the value people place on said originals.
I believe that a healthy, growing secondary market is a 'necessary evil' for both a gallery and a collector. It underpins the primary market more often than it undermines it. That said, both must try to compliment each other.
I do appreciate and understand that sales on the secondary market should be handled in a sensitive manner and maybe I have been 'guilty' of not always getting that right.
However, it has never been my motive to undermine any gallery or artist. It's a very fine line and I apologise if I have unintentionally got this wrong at times.
Like most other collectors on and off the forums, my only crime is being enthusiastic about a new work that I have been exposed to.
Unlike others, I have never hidden on any art forum and have always used the same log in name.
I willingly show my art collection and new purchases on the forums hoping that people share my enthusiasm and enjoyment. Equally I have not hidden the sales and trades that have happened when my tastes have changed or to help me grow my collection.
I do not debate the issue the way art is sold on the secondary market can be a problem. Maybe I was slightly over sensitive to The Outsiders comments but I believe certain things were being implied. I would add that I did not post images of the work, its original source or original cost. Those facts I avoided for the very reasons I have discussed above.
The details about source and cost (incorrectly quoted) were introduced to the public forum by another.

I'm amazed by what the outsiders said!

Deputy no you have picked me up wrong. I did not take your comment as aimed at me and I was simply trying to put my views to the valid point/question you made/posed (hence why a quoted your post).
Sorry it went off on a tangent and was a little long winded.
