FS: BAST Original, KAWS, Beejoir, Stinkfish +, by mmmike on Feb 16, 2012 14:08:38 GMT 1, Esciff it sounds to me like the Gallery are not happy with Bast as he sells privately and obviously he has a deal where he controls this. Deputy I would agree with you but if you go back a couple of weeks Harvey/Neil posted two beautiful Bast pieces he bought direct so I understand him moving this on if he does not want 3. It will not be moving again as i really like it so it will stay in my collection. Now as to the Gallery's point. Bast may have sold at a low price or even given it away. that is his business. Like a gift print lets say given by an artist if it makes open sale it obviously has a value. He / They acussed Harvey/Neil but they are selling a canvass at ยฃ6K which is a lot and in my book not as nice as the piece harvey/Neil was selling. So I do not blame Harvey/Neil for not giving it away and I think for a 1/1 see pic below at that price I am happy thanks. When i compare other things I have seen for the price I think I have got a bit of a bargain actually. Also regardless of the right and wrongs of galleries opinions I do not think if anyone reads their post that they were not rude. I think its pretty daft to be that rude regardless. Anyway here it is: BAST by John Hassett, on Flickr
All else aside that is some nice bast

He has always been helpful, transparent and willing to share his knowledge, as he has been here - he is a pleasure to deal with and meet. He has a fantastic collection and his enthusiasm and energy for this scene is infectious. If everyone approached the board with the same positive attitude it would be a better place!

To see this so blatantly (and regularly) abused by you, and your cohorts, is truly saddening.

Wow. Great diatribe. Why do you think they did this? They've never commented on any other sales thread. Again, perhaps there is something more to the history of the piece than we or Neil know. The anger on this forum is what's really mind blowing.

FS: BAST Original, KAWS, Beejoir, Stinkfish +, by johnnyh on Feb 16, 2012 17:56:18 GMT 1, Cheers esciff think it's more some tosser who joined them and as said earlier they obviously do not control the artist. Which I think is a good thing. As mentioned Neil told me the price of his new ones back in Jan. So he was straight with me. Same way I never discussed those prices when I bought this piece.
But I am pretty sure that person does not reflect those galleries. I hope some one from there does respond. As very rude posts and not only on this occasion but do dislike very rude posts regardless of who by.

I lol'd at this...
I also lol'd when TheOutsiders/Laz blocked me from following them on twitter when I questioned their incorrect charging of VAT on the Zevs release. Apparently they can do no wrong and can't take any criticism whatsoever, even when it's TRUE and warranted. I'm taking my ball and going home!
Best of luck with the sales Harveyn.

So I was the second owner through a trade as previously explained valued at ยฃ3000. I cannot imagine that there can be any other history to this piece.
I have contacted BAST and explain the situation in full.
I am not sure that this is the first and only outburst by this individual as dealing with an anonymous person has its restrictions, but maybe I need to grow thicker skin.

Deputydawg I tried to answer it in my last post but maybe I was drawn to the specifics of my thread rather than answering the generic question that you asked.
There are probably many aspects to consider but here are two that come to mind.
From the love of art aspect I guess the honest answer is you would hope that in every case each piece would stay forever with its original owner or the longer the better. I would add that this would also probably if not definitely lead to the commercial failure of said artist.
So to the second aspect. I believe that a healthy, growing secondary market is a 'necessary evil' for a gallery, artist and a collector. It underpins the primary market more often than it undermines it. That said, all must try to compliment each other.
Whether a sale that is made shortly after a purchase from primary and several times thereafter undermines the artist or a gallery purely depends on the circumstances. For instance in a rising market I think little harm is done but in a declining market this type of sale if not handled sensitively could have a detrimental effect on the longevity of an artists commercial success.
I would also add that too rapid a rise in an artists commercial value could also have a negative effect especially when their CV appears to be devoid from the usual boxes you would expect to see ticked.
Of course these are generic thoughts and there are as always exceptions to the rule.

FS: BAST Original, KAWS, Beejoir, Stinkfish +, by loucastel on Feb 16, 2012 22:39:20 GMT 1, Another thing. Now I could be wrong on this as I repeat I DID NOT BUY THIS FROM BAST. I did find out from an interested buyer that this work was $2200 at source last year (excluding shipping and local taxes). I am pretty sure this does not make my delivered price of ยฃ2500 triple!! I am pretty sure that it makes it a damn sight cheaper than a gallery price for a work of this caliber. Again this makes little difference as I did not buy this work from BAST and traded it for a piece valued at ยฃ3000. Nobody said you bought it direct. We know its history and so do you and your friend, albeit disingenuously presented here. We were speaking on behalf of our artist and friend, Bast. We really have nothing further to say on the matter. Bast is obviously not capable of making these comments himself, Comments like this and the other posts by Outsiders really smack of being holier than thou, true hypocrites, I would like to ask Outsiders if this is the opinion of Steve Lazarides himself or some opinionated upstart?

That being said, I would appreciate a response to my prior question, which was whether posted prices on a gallery's web site, such as Laz, POW, etc. is either required to, or traditionally does, include VAT. Any replies would be most appreciated.
Carry on with the flaming.

From my understanding pricing usually includes VAT. Some refund overseas VAT and some don't. Laz IMO does the sneakiest thing in that it provides two different receipts one to domestic buyers which show the portion of the total cost that is VAT, and for international buyers shows the whole amount as cost. That way they are about to essentially charge international buyers VAT and keep it themselves rather than submitting it to the tax man. This is how it works with the editions at least. It has been posted here that at least one person has been refunded VAT. I would guess on a large purchase. I was not so lucky when I made a purchase of a modest print.

First to offer ยฃ2500 delivered to the UK gets it. Bast is a true gent to his fans, if not the best, deliberately underpricing work he sells direct from his site or (in the case of this piece you're selling at triple the price) direct from his studio, to "put something out there for the fans who ain't got the coin to own a gallery piece". To see this so blatantly (and regularly) abused by you, and your cohorts, is truly saddening.
whoa

Well I guess that it is good to know that threads like this can blow up in Britain just like they do over here in the U.S., only with a bit more civility.
I've bought numerous pieces through Laz over the years, VAT has always, always, been deducted.

Buying and selling is obviously a massive and important part of the creation of an artists popularity, but that does not mean we shouldn't think about the consequences - well that's what I've learnt anyway.

So when an artist brings out multiple edition print's, that is like loads of extension's, got nothing to do with making a bit of money, also I would like to know what the "consequences" are we should worry about.

I'm talking about originals continually changing hands rapidly between collectors, tarnishes the image of the artist, as well as, being plain rude.
