ORIGINAL BEEJOIR CANVASES TODAY @ SOS 4PM, by Gentle Mental on Jul 13, 2013 1:59:24 GMT 1, This is the kind of visual message you would have seen in 2007/8. Now,it just looks tired and dull. A very poor image for ยฃ335. Everyone who buys this stuff is smoking what they are in thailand. Put the gun handles on a banana, a traffic cone, a teapot. All the same. Dull. So children dancing in coloured rainbows, weather or kids in general is cutting edge street art? kind words from the guy/girl that landed two After The Rain prints prints, now that s**t is very tired ouch. but true. least you won't find this at Ikea... yet.

The day the scene went soft., by Gentle Mental on Jun 30, 2013 9:09:07 GMT 1, it has not gone soft, it is what it is. has always been and will be long after we're gone.
it just feels that it has.
there will be another james as there will be another gentlemental grumbling about how crappy things are now and not like the good o days.
art is far bigger and more interesting than having pictures on walls.

Dolk Still Rising , by Gentle Mental on Jun 27, 2013 3:25:47 GMT 1, warhol was a lot of hype....so was picasso...so's brainwash.
every piece of weak work is diluting the "fire" (if there ever was one to speak of) of the artist, on the other hand, every piece sold, is re-inforcing the beliefs of the invested.
Faith testing is a strange, slippery beast.
talent, skills, originality, integrity do help, but they're not main criteria for fame and fortune.
"Wall friendliness", timing and strategy are way more crucial.
For every dolk, there are thousands out there who are way more talented, but made less in a month than what one of his print would fetch on ebay, just look at the under ยฃ50 thread.

The difference between professional and amateur artists???, by Gentle Mental on Jun 26, 2013 9:03:28 GMT 1, most people have no say in what is good art. they just think they do. and that could very well be enough. for them. That sounds a little arrogant and even condescending there GM, im sure it wasnt meant to though eh?.
oh dear... just read it myself... that did sound terrible!
my point is, and i'm going to be a bit long winded here, because i don't know if i have one, and i think i'm going to make things worse.. but what the hell...
GOOD (PROFESSIONAL?) ART, the thing that is deemed beautiful, important, desirable, valuable, collectable, presentable for a long term needs the crucial validation from a very small and elite collective. namely the critics, the galleries and the rich and famous. Their "top 100" lists and celebrity homes' walls or album covers etc are endorsements, no make that the LIFEBLOOD, of the artists and the work.
(It's a very cynical view, but i'm in that kind of mood today... sorry!)
Eventually, history will decide if these, be it fads, trends, isms whatnot - is "good" art. And will include them in some tome of some form for others to admire and desire..
but do realize, our (mine and yours) opinions don't matter very much in what makes a piece of art good. we think we do, and that could be enough. but most likely not.
Where would our beloved Dolk be in 50 years? nowhere if the mugrabis don't buyout an entire show.
we are as clueless as the next guy bun fighting over the next appearance of the add to cart button. NOT because we're dumb, but because we don't get to make the rules.
we only have our guts and our search engines.

A small gentle observation, that may be interpreted as a moan, by Gentle Mental on Jun 25, 2013 8:34:35 GMT 1, it's not very exciting anymore... isit?
With banksy missing, micallef and dface over stretched and thinning, pow's releases weakening... and dolk (dolk! who've thunk dolk've risen so high!!) peaking, the forum is losing quite a few insightful voices... (where did they go? someone pm me a link, please!)
Aside from a very very tiny handful (i could only think of phelgm, TBH), the ice is very thin.
And the undercurrent of greed is strong.
And greed is transparent, boring and has no soul to speak of.

Ai Weiwei Divine Comedy - Listen!, by Gentle Mental on Jun 24, 2013 8:46:59 GMT 1, yes... do give the album a good few listens, blast it through your hi-fi, see the reaction it gets. it's quite liberating.
Musically though the instrumentation is the usual chord/beat guitars and drums, The vocalisation is closer to chinese opera than rock/pop/rap.
the lyrics are very clever. and works really well in mandarin. my favourite's Give Tomorrow Back to Me. Every line is worthy of a thousand picket signs/t-shirt/wheatpaste poster
