Highest Sold in 10 Years Time..., by jamesreeve5 on Feb 9, 2009 21:52:47 GMT 1, I know that nobody on here likes to talk about money, but I want to see where people think these artists will stack up to one another in 10 years time. It's just for fun.
After voting, please give the price which you think the work will be around as a response.
Again, just for fun!

Highest Sold in 10 Years Time..., by skelly on Feb 10, 2009 0:29:30 GMT 1, yeah definitely no walker! I voted Banksy but Kaws or Neate...I think Neate could be a defining artist if his gallery pieces continue to progress..Kaws I hear about quite often in NYC. Also Os Gemeos on an outside chance. I don't think any of these guys could actually surpass Banksy prices, only if they made some huge progress with their pieces and somehow came to the forefront of the art market

Whenever I think about it, I always wonder if the Hirst/Banksy collaboration should be counted as his high or should Simple Intelligence Testing. Personally, I think Simple Intelligence Testing should be it.

Why not?

Highest Sold in 10 Years Time..., by snausages on Feb 10, 2009 3:14:37 GMT 1, I think the better question is will any of these artists break their own auction records within 10 years time? While I think Oct. 08 will be our generations "black friday" and that the worst (in certain respects) are behind usโI don't expect serious enthusiasm to return to these markets for a good decade.
And there's some great stuff (contemporary art & photography) coming up at auction this month, for $100,000 you can buy yourself a museum quality canvas by a few artists that are practically guaranteed major museum shows. I don't know why you would spend more than that on any of these artists except Banksy.
On this list he is the only one in that position. Kaws and Faile a big maybe, although hell if I know why people want paintings of smurfs and spongebobs. Neate? I guess anything can happen.
I think Banksy's current records will still be standing in 10 years.

Because it can only be Banksy. Out of the list above, only Shep has outside chance, he's certainly captured something of the zeitgeist at this moment in time, and the more he gets arrested, the more he gets written about, which can only be a good thing in terms of artistic posterity.
The problem (if you could call it that) with him is twofold in my opinion. He lacks a completely captive market outside of the US. As much as folks here might rate him, we're in the minority in the grand global scheme of things, and for true longeivity and genre defining moments, worldwide recognition has to be paramount. Especially in an age of the internet and Russian / Chinese new money, the US isn't the superpower it once was in terms of top end auction prices.
The other smaller issue is that now so much of Obey's identity is tied in with Obama, so that if the new administration makes a mess of things (unlikely it seems at this moment, but who can ever tell), or there's another messy foreign war, Shep's politics will be inextricably linked and that will have the umbrella effect of taking him down too. Things that visually capture a moment have a habit of dating very quickly.
As I see it, Banksy has done everything right so far. The only way any artist will be remembered in a movement as ephemeral as something painted on the streets is to be written about. As much as it's undemocratic, it's art critics, art historians, curators, galleries and mainstream media that will decide what will rise to the top in the very conservative auction house environment.
If these things were based on artistic merit alone, Neate and Parla would rank far higher, but as it is all that matters in ten years time will be words in mainstream media print and number of google hits, and these will directly correlate with auction prices.
I know I'm preaching to the converted with you mose having read some of your posts before, but to use an obvious example Duchamp never had a great deal of artistic refinement, but what he did have was the talent to attract publicity and controversy. It's not because of any real artistic merit that he's still talked about to this day. Equally, in my opinion Warhol's greatest talent wasn't his art, but his ability to market his art.
I'm with you all the way on the Hirst colab not counting for anything in terms of Banksy records by the way. It wasn't far off what a Hirst spot painting would have fetched, Banksy additions or not. We were well on course to see a ยฃ1million+ Banksy auction moment, the enonomic situation has just pushed that back a little further, but I've no doubt our movement will get there, and as with so much else, Banksy will be first.

Highest Sold in 10 Years Time..., by snausages on Feb 10, 2009 4:07:46 GMT 1, Can't agree with that, as much as I don't want to admit, I think Kaws has the best chance because he has some serious contemporary gallery strength behind him, i.e. he's got connections to the insider world of contemporary art. Everyone else is an outsider. I think Faile has a chance because I think they are bringing something new together with their influences and the layering, the decay, the overload of visual stimulus it's very much of our times. Neate and Parla, conceptually just not groundbreaking, all the rest of these artists I don't personally see it. Fairey I think his fame is tied way too close to one particular thing, Obama. I think it's an issue that even his canvases are editioned, and I don't honestly see him being accepted by most of the clique fine art community. But then again I don't think anyone is going to be breaking records over the next decade.

Banksy is an outsider because he chooses to be an outsider. Many hitters on the inside want a piece of him. Banksy will be tops in 10 years no doubt.

The Black Friday comment is spot on! I Originally had "5 years time" in the poll, but decided to reconsider since I don't think we will see a breaking of that record in the next few years.
In compiling the list, I really only had 2 or 3 artists that I think could really shatter the ceiling, but I tried to include as many as possible for discussion, and even that seemed to not be enough. Here is my reasoning behind the options:
1. Banksy - current record holder, not much else needed 2. Shep - Obama Original could fetch a wild sum if ever put into a major auction 3. Kaws - Street and gallery cred, could pop if any major work was ever offered at auction 4. Faile - Longshot, but a large piece could result in a bidding war 5. Parla - Another longshot, and no major pieces ever really sold at auction 6. McGee - If the room installation from Dietch ever sells... 7. Neate - Could maybe do it if the rest of the world knew (or cared) who he was 8. Others - Hey you never know...

Which Fairey canvases are editioned? And, Faile is way too niche to ever get anywhere.

Highest Sold in 10 Years Time..., by pezlow on Feb 10, 2009 11:22:33 GMT 1, I can't see Kaws getting any records. Maybe I am just blinded by personal preference but I cannot see the attraction of Kaws stuff. I know frankie is a big fan but I really don't see what the fuss is about.
A huge shep piece could attract large bids but Banksy is really the one. As a third choice I would say that you have to pick someone who has universal appeal, are represented by a top notch gallery such as Deitch and aren't necessarily influenced by hype. Os Gemeos and Swoon fit that bill but it is a long way off for them.

Highest Sold in 10 Years Time..., by afroken on Feb 10, 2009 12:21:15 GMT 1, I think people underestimate the relevance of this as an art movement. We'll see a number of these artists increase in profile over the next 30 years as they represent a generation that, in theory, will have increased spending power as it gets older. I've said this before, but Hirst and his contemporaries are the last artists of the baby boomer generation. 20 years from now there is a good chance that many artists from Hirst's generation will look dated and unfashionable as they represent a trend that has developed over the last 30 to 40 years and that is abruptly coming to an end at this very moment.
Don't underestimate the sginificance of this generational change. The real question is whether any of these artists will be remembered once we're all dead and our grand children look back on generation X and Y as old-fashioned and irrelevent.

Highest Sold in 10 Years Time..., by pezlow on Feb 10, 2009 13:00:15 GMT 1, No underestimating here. Since pop art there are been arguably only two art movements of any widespread appeal. The first was undoubtedly the YBA's and the second is the street art movement.
What I love about our movement is how global it is. That is unlike any other art movement pretty much in history. Whilst the internet has made this possible that doesn't mean that this is any less significant.

I think some of the names mentioned have a style that will do well within the scene, but when we start talking about 10 years time I cant see them growing to a scale that they are known by the average person on the street.

The current answer is none. All canvas works by Fairey are 1/1 originals these days.
There was an old, discontinued series of screenprints on canvas 5+ years back. They were editions of 2+ an AP like the screenprints on wood, collaged wood, and metal are today. Not many designs ended up having a screenprint on canvas version.

So in theory Fairey would be number 1 ....... but some how I feel we have seen it all before with what Warhol worked to achieve. Kaws is like the street art Murakami,
Neither of these 2 give you the same buzzzzz as Banksy
Though when it comes to longevity of an image i.e 10 years time I think you need to look something a bit more universally appealing to people.

Highest Sold in 10 Years Time..., by Guest on Feb 10, 2009 13:54:35 GMT 1, Banksy / Neate in a close run thing
only time will tell, but IMO neate will never capture the public's attention as Banksy has. In auction terms Neates prices may return to the heights achieved before the downturn, but will they be higher than Banksy, again IMO no.

Agree!
I love Neates work, but like Parla and Micallef, I cant see their style of work being massively popular in the main stream But then in a way Shepard Fairey has become too popular and a bit too commercial to be taken as an Artist rather than a Brand. I get the feeling he has realized he has that problem, and might spend the next few years pulling things round, and changing the way his work is released.

Highest Sold in 10 Years Time..., by motor on Feb 10, 2009 14:41:44 GMT 1, I think people underestimate the relevance of this as an art movement.
No underestimating here.
I agree with your comments guys. I wouldn't underestimate the power of this movement. It's still in the early stage but it's already big and global and it's being noticed more and more. Yes it is hard to see a light at the end of this tunnel but it's there.
As for the who will sold highest in 10 years time - I suppose Banksy. However at this level it's going to be down to who are they (artists) going to be represented by... so who knows.
We should know more in the near future.
