Ron English Print ๐บ๐ธ Popaganda โข Pop Culture โข Toys, by Howard Johnson on Oct 17, 2018 22:16:25 GMT 1, Hello! I have a few Ron English canvases that were exhibited in NYC around 2006. I'm considering selling them but want to obtain some official paperwork before putting them on the market.
Does anybody know the best way to go about this? I contacted the artist and gallery directly but neither have replied to my emails. If someone could point me in the right direction, or has a connection with either the artist or Johnathon Levine Gallery and could call in a favor, I would greatly appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance!!

Barry McGee ๐บ๐ธ Mission School Art Movement, by Howard Johnson on Oct 15, 2018 18:06:19 GMT 1, Looking to swap this screenprint from 2000. I'm making a DIY cluster for my office, and am looking for McGee works without text (especially the POSTERMAT lithos). As for value, a trimmed copy of this sold for $5k (see link below), but one is available on ebay for $500, so your guess is as good as mine lol. Size is 18" x 26", its unsigned (as issued) and minty fresh.
If your interested please DM offers. Thanks!

The Best Piece In My Collection, by Howard Johnson on Oct 9, 2018 18:28:42 GMT 1, I'll play. This little Haring canvas is my favorite. Keith made it as a wedding invitation for some friends (its a serigraph), and I purchased it the year of my wedding so, you know, feelings and stuff. Enjoy!

UAA Exclusive "Drop" Thread , by Howard Johnson on Oct 9, 2018 17:47:06 GMT 1, DROP DROP DROP DROP DROP
People poking around after the other Murakami drop may have noticed these, but Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth has three Murakami editions priced at $650 and one at $700 (plus a lot more expensive ones).
This used to be the run of the mill pricing for his editions, but there seems to have been a drastic spike recently. Anyways, I figured there may be a few of y'all out there looking for a legit Murakami for under a grand (I got myself the pink one as the skull images have always been my favorite). Happy hunting!

If you are looking to add a Baldessari to your collection on the cheap, this is a fantastic option. The (in plate) signature looks like its hand signed, and it features the iconic dots over faces motif that made him a star. As an Angelino, I can say that Mr. Baldessari is considered the undisputed king of the So-Cal art scene. I encourage everyone to explore his massive body of work...and buy this poster lol.

UAA Exclusive "Drop" Thread , by Howard Johnson on Oct 5, 2018 20:59:28 GMT 1, Alright folks. The time has come for Drop 5 (and subsequent secondary drops), which I personally think is a pretty nice one although Iโll let you make your own opinions. Below is the link and some background research Iโve done to hopefully shed some information. Drop 5: Joan Miro Lithograph FC Barcelona 1974. Special Edition Poster Lithograph in colors on guarro paper Limited Edition of 1500 (all numbered with the FCโs stamp, year of edition and plate signed) Available for $170ish Link: www.galeriajoangaspar.com/eshop/en/miro-joan/82-miro-joan-fc-barcelona-1974-special-edition.htmlSome background Iโve been able to find on these prints: Image from original painting by Miro in 1974. Image was then imprinted in three different versions. -One edition of 50 - without lettering and hand signed and numbered by Miro on Arches paper. -One edition of 1500 (link above) - with lettering - numbered with marks as noted above on guarro paper -One edition of 50,000 (more on this below) - with lettering - unnumbered on poster paper Link to some background: www.joanmiro.co.uk/barcelona/ Note: There also appears to be later editions from a printing in 2001 in which prints are numbered out of edition 1000 and without lettering - Iโve seen sales for these in the $200-400 range on secondary sites. There also appears to be another edition from a printing in 2007 in which the prints are numbered out of edition of 999 and without lettering - (size may also be different) - Iโve seen sales for these in $100-300 range. Honestly, I did not concern myself with researching these other editions of 999 or 1000 that much... I have not been able to find much pertaining to the edition /50 and the edition /1500 except for this sale: www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/joan-miro-1893-1983-futbol-club-barcelona-5407575-details.aspxConfirmed sale for $900+ from Christies auction in 2011. Note this is from the edition of 1500, but the sheet trimmed at the lower margin, lacking the text, some creases, a few minor scratches at the lower right of the subject, unexamined out of the frame And for some images of the poster that I received today! Condition isnโt perfect - small creases and foxing and rough edges but I wasnโt expecting a pristine post thats 44 years old. And as some bonus: As mentioned above: Drop 5b: Joan Miro Offset Lithograph FC Barcelona 1974. Poster Edition Offset Lithograph on Poster Paper Edition of 50,000 Available for $60ish Link: www.galeriajoangaspar.com/eshop/en/miro-joan/83-miro-joan-fc-barcelona-1974.htmlHuge edition, but doesnโt seem that prevalent or that common as the edition size would suggest. Idโs assume a large amount of these havenโt lasted through the years: Found one for sale here: www.artsy.net/artwork/joan-miro-poster-for-the-75th-anniversary-of-the-barcelona-football-clubBonus Bonus Drop 5c: Pablo Picasso Limited Edition Original Show Posters Editions of 500 www.galeriajoangaspar.com/eshop/en/picasso-pablo/86-picasso-pablo-sala-gaspar-dibujos-de-picasso-abril-1961.htmlwww.galeriajoangaspar.com/eshop/en/picasso-pablo/84-picasso-pablo-sala-gaspar-pinturas-de-picasso-noviembre-diciembre-1960.htmlwww.galeriajoangaspar.com/eshop/en/picasso-pablo/85-picasso-pablo-sala-gaspar-dibujos-de-picasso-enero-febrero-1961.htmlDidnโt do a huge amount of research on these as images didnโt appeal that much to me. But for sub $200 a vintage original limited edition poster of Picasso seems pretty good. Seen varying listings for $500-1000+ elsewhere in my brief searching. ENJOY!
You are the undisputed winner of the murakami. Keep up the hunt!

UAA Exclusive "Drop" Thread , by Howard Johnson on Sept 28, 2018 18:36:21 GMT 1, Wonderful find! $50 for limited edition photographs by these heavyweights is a great deal. I am interested to see if they are actual c-prints, which is probably an unrealistic expectation, but a man can hope!

Jasper Johns ๐บ๐ธ Painter โข Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism , by Howard Johnson on Sept 27, 2018 1:43:55 GMT 1, I think I bought the last painting with two balls. Thanks OP and community for helping me understand what I was purchasing. Your very welcome!
After seeing this post I went back to pick up one I was on the fence on considering they are now selling out. I poked around on the official editions page and noticed that "target" and "hands" are literally the exact same print as the signed/numbered editions. Same size, image (could be slightly different in size), technique, and paper stock. The sizing on only those two is the exact same as the official prints, both of which are ridiculously low editions.
I'm not sure that makes a difference to anyone but I found it to be a very cool attribute of those two specifically. On another note, for those deciding on which one to get, IMHO the blue false start is underwhelming, but all of the flags will knock your socks off. I have not seen any of the others in person but am seriously considering one of the coat hangers after seeing that amazing frame job!

What Has Become Of This Forum?, by Howard Johnson on Sept 26, 2018 22:10:03 GMT 1, There have always been flippers and trolls.
There will always be flippers and trolls.
Be the change you want to see (Gandhi?), call out misinformation, and ignore the noise. We all do this every night with the news. Just apply the same logic to this forum.
Free speech is precious. In fact, the most despicable types of speech are absolutely necessary to a thriving community.* People are different, the unique mix of characters on this forum can be a beautiful thing, and frankly most of the trolls are playing a tongue-in-cheek character rather than going for outright harassment (which should never be allowed).
Its the internet. People will be assh*les under the guise of anonymity. My username is the same as my divers license and birth certificate. I did this because I think people should stand by our opinions, but I certainly understand that others hold different views about their privacy/anonymity, and respecting that is also part of respecting the freedom of speech.
*Speech aimed at inciting violence or used for mass manipulation does not apply.

UAA Exclusive "Drop" Thread , by Howard Johnson on Sept 26, 2018 3:20:19 GMT 1, So I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that the Indiana posters are signed in plate and very nicely numbered. The bad news is that there is additional text at the bottom which IS NOT WHAT IS ADVERTISED! I'm a little bummed, but given the really stellar image (for those of us who like a little text in our art) and recent passing of Mr. Indiana, no one can argue with that $40 price point.
Happy hunting!

UAA Exclusive "Drop" Thread , by Howard Johnson on Sept 25, 2018 16:12:29 GMT 1, Not sure, although some forum members have been in contact with ULAE and may know more. When Chris posted the link I seem to remember False Start 1 and 0-9 sold out very quickly, then Flag 2 soon after. Flag 1 has sold out in the last month or so
Anywhere from 1-300 on each. Apparently it varies, but 300 was the intended edition of the portfolio (the prints were originally going to be a large scale loose leaf catalog of his prints, in an edition of 300). They don't know if each got printed fully, but because the project was scrapped it's more likely that less than 300 of each image exist. (Why would they scrap it if all the expensive printing was already completed?)
This is all second hand info from ULAE, just to be clear, but I don't see why they'd have any reason to lie.
#stillthebestfind #cantbelievetheyarenotgone
Edit: quoted the wrong post, sorry!

UAA Exclusive "Drop" Thread , by Howard Johnson on Sept 24, 2018 20:06:32 GMT 1, Yeah sorry, my comment was kinda confusing. Yeah I would consider buying the image (at whatever price point) if it was an edition of ten. I like Cleon's work, but would not care to own a massive edition of 150. His "hole poster" was an edition of 50 for $75. Thats my cheap-ass sweet spot, lol. My point was more that I'd like to see more lower editions or HPMS, and artists can still do limited edition posters or whatever at the lower price points.
Dive Jedi please share your work with the board! I would love to see it. If you want cheap originals from a local LA artist, I've got a number for sale here: howardjohnsonsellsout.com.

UAA Exclusive "Drop" Thread , by Howard Johnson on Sept 24, 2018 19:38:45 GMT 1, Thank you for posting!
Absolutely repulsive, but I personally love it! Not $150 love it, but would probably pay that much if it was an edition of 10 or lower.
I personally dont understand all these up and coming artists that are selling massive print editions (editions of 100 or more). This amount of work on the market threatens to submerge their market before it ever really gets going. I understand that prints are an easy way to cash in, and yes its nice that all price points are represented, but why not reduce this edition to 10 and raise the price according? Same profit, but it keeps the work more exclusive.
IMHO we are driven to covet that which we cannot possess (women and art...), and to keep a fan base hungry I think its prudent to drive up the exclusivity of ones work as much as possible. Obviously, this doesn't work when an artist is first starting out, but by now Cleon is attracting a ton of great attention and publicity, would it seem like now is a logical moment to shift to a more exclusive approach in his sales.
Please feel free to disagree!

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by Howard Johnson on Sept 20, 2018 18:51:45 GMT 1, I'll play devils advocate and personally recommend recommend any of prints beginning with the LA set moving forward. (Kate Moss technically fits within the contours of my opinion, but I think that one is highly overrated and the Warhol homage was done way better with the soup cans and Shep's "Marilyn Warhol.")
Beginning with the LA Set, printed by local master Richard Duarto, Banksy's prints took a massive leap forward in terms of quality. The early prints, while iconic, and simply too rudimentary and utilize far lower quality materials then the later prints. Most are simple silkscreens (often one or two colors) printed on (comparatively) low grade recycled paper (Radar rat is the massive exception for both ingenuity and execution).
The quality of these early prints, IMHO, do not justify the price points they command. Sure, barcode may be iconic, but when placed side-by-side with a work like Nola or Choose Your Weapon, the difference in pure quality is massive. The whole, "early prints are better because they more accurately reflect the do-it-yourself approach we all love about Banksy," was valid until these prints started costing tens of thousands of dollars. If I had that kind of money, I would not spend it on a poorly produced print, no matter how iconic. Once again, thats just me.
As for my personal favorite, I like the image and ambition of "Flags." The uniquely American image (although appropriated an arguably superior photograph) is unlike most of his other of his prints in terms of the complexity of the image. I've been lucky enough to own one for quite some time, and found myself constantly revisiting the image with different interpretations as I grew older.
Alas, this edition was ultimately a MISSED opportunity. The metallic paper idea was fantastic in theory, but the choice in stock was atrocious as most print owners can attest to. Those damn prints creased and got scratched at the smallest brush with any other surface. In addition, the deep black of the image makes any damage glaringly noticeable, which is why I sold mine and I often by damaged prints because its never bothered me before, and the delicate nature of the materials makes restoration impossible.
However the ambition of this edition still makes it my favorite of the Banksy prints. I may not ever buy another one, but I will continue to respect artists who swing for the fences with editions rather than churn out the standard serigraphs/lithographs on paper that we've been bombarded with since the pop movement.
EDIT: Just realized I wrote about this opinion a couple years back in this exact same thread. Sorry for the redundancy.

Your latest Art Purchase?, by Howard Johnson on Sept 20, 2018 18:28:57 GMT 1, Finally found one & jumped on it. Couldn't be happier! The best JR by a country mile! Always wanted one myself, but the size/cost always deterred me (on another notes what do these run now-a-days?). Congrats on the acquisition, and please post a pic of your frame up!

UAA Exclusive "Drop" Thread , by Howard Johnson on Sept 20, 2018 18:26:29 GMT 1, Credit where it's due, I think Christopher is one of the most knowledgeable and helpful members of the forum and he doesn't hesitate to share real information, not just drops already sold out, unlike others. Christopher, you're a credit to this forum. Thank you. This isn't a normal drop, but I wanted to introduce y'all to photographer David Levinthal. His photographs incorporate vintage toys to explore our cultural relationship with these stereotypes and the influence of nostalgia and how it effects how we view the world. Frankly, I just think his images are straight up gorgeous. Plus, hes a longtime friend and mentor to Kaws and was a big influence on Kaws' use of toys in his body of work. Levinthal's work is fairly expensive. It is largely comprised of unique large scale photographs, that normally run $2.5-$25k when they come up for auction. However, he published a couple affordable editions with both artspace and little-collector for around $300. Personally, I think these editions are an absolute steal if you like the imagery. The little-collector editions are 250, 150, and 50 depending on the size. He has also released special edition books that contain prints related to WWII, blackface as a cultural phenomenon, and modern dating. The WWII book can be purchased via the last link. Happy hunting! Thank you so much for this unexpectedly wonderful comment. Really appreciate the support, and am glad you like the thread!
I offered to swap one of my Murakamis with another member which leaves me with two. caruso's comment convinced me to give away my last extra (if others want to donate one of theirs I'll keep a running tally of how many are up for grabs).
In order to win the print please post a find of your own in this thread. I will be being a little more selective with this giveaway, so the find needs to be a restock or new find that has not be largely covered on this forum or elsewhere.
I got these prints earlier this week and they are absolutely gorgeous, and have a very similar texture to the artist's signed & numbered works. Perfect posters for the causal (and/or broke) fan.
Happy hunting!
