More of the same, they told me, by mike hunt on Nov 20, 2007 13:27:31 GMT 1, I think the problem with any art, music and design is formula. Someone does something very successful, and to ensure a degree of success, businesses and artists follow the formula. The music industry has been rife with the same old formula for ages - almost nothing sounded new for years. People are original, but don't get noticed because businesses see it as risky or the timing isnt right. Its all about timing. I know brilliant but unknown bands who, if they released their albums a few years earlier or later would have smashed it. The stars sometimes need to align for you to some extent. For what you produce to work outside the formula takes most people alot of time and work with little reward. You really need to believe, be strong and push! However, there is a difference to being strong and deluding yourself - try and critique your work in an open way.

Anthony Lister, by mike hunt on Nov 20, 2007 13:13:37 GMT 1, thank you so much. I promise to behave in future. Maybe we could have a forum whip (like they do in politics) to keep people in order?
Have one back from me, but pleeeaaase tow the line, no more radical comments that are going to upset folks!! ;D

Anthony Lister, by mike hunt on Nov 20, 2007 12:05:07 GMT 1, Yea - I got a hit for my post too. I've changed my mind because of it. Everyone is going to be the ext big thing. Especially that Donovan person.
Im glad others are saying that not everyone can be the next best thing, I seem to be taking more hits than Pete Doherty lately for my posts.

Anthony Lister, by mike hunt on Nov 19, 2007 18:15:02 GMT 1, exactly right nuart. The next big thing won't even be streetart, let alone specific streetartists. I think after 10 years or so, the next big thing will be digging holes in the ground in an arty fashion. I christen this potential movement ArtsHole. Streetart is dead! Long live ArtsHole! The revolution begins here my friends. Hello? Anybody?

Anthony Lister, by mike hunt on Nov 19, 2007 14:44:55 GMT 1, I'm not trying to piss on anyones fire by the way. I think these artists are really good and I like their work (a lot). Doesn't follow that they are the next big thing though.

Anthony Lister, by mike hunt on Nov 19, 2007 14:42:04 GMT 1, I don't think Lister, Ian Francis or anyone else is the next big thing. People always try to play up the next big thing. There is no-one making the something even close to the same impact as banksy or even micallef did. In my opinion it is very unlikely there will be another big thing in the forseeable future. The cutting edge artists have shown themselves and time will tell if they rise to the top.

BONGO FIND THIS, by mike hunt on Nov 15, 2007 15:57:45 GMT 1, This is the most informative thread ever known to man. I now have a greater understanding of mathematics and old skool hiphop rhymes. This should be part of the curriculum. Peace out.

which artist do think is........, by mike hunt on Nov 15, 2007 13:07:19 GMT 1, So much terrible (or even worse - average) art to choose from and so little time. Pretty much anything from one of the most boring galleries I ever had the misfortune to enter - artisan (artisangalleries.com). The online gallery doesn't express the horror of seeing it in real life.

LAZ's new star, by mike hunt on Nov 10, 2007 0:49:35 GMT 1, Quite right. It is difficult to give an informed opinion without seeing it in the flesh
Please don't neg me but I'd just like to say I would be interested to seeing this work in the flesh, so to speak. It reminds me of a super little canvas which was positioned next to Banksys work at the Sothebys preview, of their June sale. The canvas was by Nigel Cooke and was called 'Dark Sun' dated 2002. I really liked it, it had so much detail going on in it. Like this artists work Nigel's canvas was really small 25.6 x 35.7cm OK this is very different from the rest of the work at Laz and I don't like every artist they represent but as for Miranda Donovan's work, I will reserve judgment until have seen it in the flesh. At the end of the day it will be THE work that I am interested in and not if the artist is male or female rich or poor. Sometimes the Internet is not the best place to make a decision re the merit of the work. As i understand she likes and uses texture so as I said I'd like to see the work close up before dismissing it. Here is Niels canvas I liked

LAZ's new star, by mike hunt on Nov 9, 2007 20:40:40 GMT 1, You hit the nail on the head mate. It reminds me of the apprentice when they had to design trainers. Realising they needed to attract an urban audience, one group branded their trainer id as 'street'. Trevor Nelson pointed out the obvious - people into urban stuff don't need to be told something is street - its just not street! Its patronising.
Laz's new star? More like Laz's old car (if it was an old nissan micra).
oh yeah - she looks so "street!!!" She looks like her daddy gave her the paints and a crash pad in east london. No thanks.

LAZ's new star, by mike hunt on Nov 9, 2007 19:21:30 GMT 1, If you do a painting of a street with graf on, then you aren't really a 'street artist' are you?! A bit obvious imo and comes across as trying too hard.

LAZ's new star, by mike hunt on Nov 9, 2007 19:00:36 GMT 1, Doesn't do much for me. Its ok - but there's nothing worse than ok. It seems like a plastic rebellion piece to me. Someone who can paint but without much to say (or not expressing themselves effectively). However, I always have only good wishes for someone trying to make it in this most difficult of jobs. Best of luck to her. It may develop into something more interesting and edgy.

Interview - Shepard Fairey, by mike hunt on Nov 8, 2007 17:26:06 GMT 1, He is so articulate and unpretentious. He also looks much younger than his real age. He has definitely struck a deal with Satan. He may be successful, good looking and articulate, but he won't be so cool when the devil claims his soul and sticks a red hot poker up his jaks! God I'm jealous.

The Mac virus..., by mike hunt on Nov 7, 2007 16:33:08 GMT 1, I used quark for years and years and finally had enough of the bugs, non-existent customer service, ridiculous price, useless modifications which make things worse and lack of keeping up-to-date with industry needs. I too am an indesign convert. The latest one works like an absolute dream on macbook pro

What happened to Eelus?, by mike hunt on Nov 5, 2007 20:15:16 GMT 1, For anyone who thinks Eelus is a one dimensional artist, check out his illustrations. They are great - dark, funny, stark and well executed. I know there's loads more in the tank. I sent him an email about them and he got straight back to me. He must have been busy at the time because his stuff was flying off the shelves, but still took the time to have a chat - very nice man.

Lady Aiko ๐ฏ๐ต Aiko Nakagawa โข New York Street Art, by mike hunt on Nov 2, 2007 21:35:02 GMT 1, A lot of it is about pr. Its also about believing in yourself when its not working out. Its either about being strong or deluding yourself (depending which side of the fence you are looking from). Lets face it, being an artist is a tough life if you haven't made it. All that time working, you are skint and have no idea if it will work out. Whenever an artist does well, I always feel admiration, even if I dislike their work.
