Recommended Art Books, by Coach on Mar 28, 2021 19:03:00 GMT 1, Early classic from Vhils, etched delux wooden boxset edition of 30. Added bonus that the cover image is down the road from me, one of the few productions I've arranged where the wall owner was absolutely livid. Should have probably told the old fella that the "mural" was going to be hammer drilled into his wall and not painted. After much discussion, the owner relented and allowed us to continue. As the image began to take shape, the owner called us down and asked Alex where he'd got the image from. It turned out it was from the in-flight magazine from an article on the history of the regions sardine fishing. The owner pointed out his building used to be his grandfathers canning factory for sardines, and the image, was a similar character that they had on the labels to the tins 100 years ago, their main export market. Portugal. A ghost from the past coming through the walls. The owner fell in love with it, and it still stands today. Great ending to what we thought was going to be a very short lived affair.
What a fabulous back story. And a gorgeous piece. Thanks for sharing.

Interestingly Bonhams have started to call non COA works "After Banksy" and well done them in giving some more protection to the buyer!

Arguably to someone with less knowledge calling something โafter Banksyโ when it is blatantly genuine is unfair to the seller as, to someone with less knowledge, it might suggest that it isnโt by Banksy. For example, I have various pieces that have solid provenance, some directly from pow, but which donโt attract a coa. I can happily guarantee their authenticity. Why should they not be described as โBanksyโ.
As Iโm sure you know, a time existed before PC, when if buying secondary, one would collect provenance, check existing ownership with pow, assess the quality of the provenance, and excersise oneโs discretion. I think PC was intended to make the higher value pieces more securely bought, not to make lower value pieces more difficult to sell.

The signatories, who represent a significant proportion of the UKโs legal scholars and include more than 120 professors of law from universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and York, warned of โan alarming extension of state control over legal assemblyโ from measures in the prime ministerโs controversial Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. Scenes of women being forced to the ground and handcuffed while attending a vigil to murder victim Sarah Everard in south London on Saturday vividly highlighted the dangers of extending powers to control protests and public gatherings, they said. TW were caught red handed selling fakes and worse also selling them secretly and surreptitiously to underbidders. Did they know they were fakes, I personally cannot believe they did not have suspicions, aside from the poor imagery but by the sheer volume from a couple of consignors. It is clear that this fraud has extended beyond the Petrol Bomb but nobody knows for sure, only they do. I agree with the point that reparation is not absolution, absolution can only come with complete disclosure and clear actions and words that they are not going to repeat it. But credit where credit is due, paying the selling price and the associated expenses back to the seller is all that can be realistically expected and is also the legal position. I personally do not mind TW selling non COA pieces but please do not call it Banksy or Warhol. If doubt exists call it After Banksy or After Warhol so the buyer at least knows its origin is dubious. Be clear and unambiguous would be my preference so individuals can make up their own mind. I do think TW should have brought the police in, that will always be a big negative to me and they also should now tell us how many fakes they sold and have been refunded and how many were genuine. It is then down to each individual to chose if they believe them and if they will support them again or not. As to the GDP pieces without COA, PC will give pretty clear guidance if a COA will be issued or not. They quite rightly do this for all the main auctions houses, as understandably, they are more interested in maintaining their own excellent reputation than letting avoidable fakes enter the legitimate auction scene, even if they do not like TW for their selling tactics as is believed to be the case. So again, my own view, COA pending etc is totally acceptable, selling non COA that has a hint of fake is not and should not be listed as being by the artist as in doing so gives positive affirmation of what it is purported to be. TW have a long way to go to get a positive reputation back which is a shame, but with better disclosure and if they stop trying to make a ยฃ regardless of everything else, they may move out of the lower divisions. I'll put my hard hat on now!!

My Aunt died aged 93 and used to say: No matter what age you are Middle Age is 10-15 years older than you are Old Age is 10-15 years older than that. She was a Red Cross volunteer driver taking Old Folks to their hospital appointments etc and only stopped when the Red Cross realised she was actually old enough to be the Mother of the "old " people she was assisting! She was spot on...when I was 20 I thought 35 was middle aged and 50 was certainly getting old. I'm lucky to have great health and a great family, I still feel young. The music I listen to is mainly modern dance music, my interests are all in the here and now. I refute the idea that I am middle aged (or worse!) but on the other hand having a 60th birthday did not make me depressed or feel anything to do with getting older...I don't FEEL any older, so therefore I am not. I'll stick to being in my self-defined 40's for a while yet!

But it does seem to me to lack even the starting point as to why most of us collect art - the love of the art itself. If I could smash the loom, or throw my clog into it, I would.

10 of each I think. I used to have a red one. They do look great in person.

A lot of the packs and inserts were different as I think they used old packageing left over from previous posters and put the Banksy poster into them too.
Not at all surprising. I had a few of these years ago. Like the Banksy stickers stuck up on the kids computers, these posters were Blu tacked to walls. None of us ever imagined that they would be worth anything. They were just enjoyed for what they are.
