Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by met on Dec 1, 2019 15:34:17 GMT 1, 'Roit Painting' 1997 seen for the first time at Severnshed 28th FEB 2000show info: "After moving to London in early 2000, Banksy went back to Bristol in February the same year, where he opened his first regular exhibition in his own name at the restaurant Severnshed , behind the docks. It was a mixture of stencil and acrylic. And from from April 2011 Los Angeles , MOCA Art in the streets
Thank you for the date correction. I hadn't realised the original version of this painting was so old, or that the substrate was wood.
The extent to which it was reworked since Severnshed in 2000 is interesting as well, including:
(i) reducing the contrast by greying the overall composition; (ii) making the sky completely different; (iii) painting out the top-left building silhouettes; and (iv) removing the signature and date from the bottom-right border.
In my opinion, these modifications very much strengthened the work.
And, just like Devolved Parliament, it could be that the aesthetic changes to the piece were also accompanied by a name change โ from the earlier title mentioned by godโs ultimate noise, to the simpler Riot painting.
Regarding the creation date, it would be more accurate if this were amended to "1997โ[year of last alteration]".

Later version:

Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by met on Dec 1, 2019 9:39:46 GMT 1, the background of this one from the same Poll Tax riots seems to fit the style of skyline, traffic lights etc from the original Banksy painting.
Excellent work, inefficiencyof. I believe you cracked it โ or at least part of it.
The tower block in the background is based on New Zealand House, visible from Trafalgar Square. The building with the columns to the left of the canvas is based on Canada House.
Whatever source photo Banksy had for that part of his painting was flipped horizontally, as I've done with the shots below.

Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by met on Dec 1, 2019 8:43:02 GMT 1, The original Banksy painting from circa 2000โ2001 could easily be based on a composite of images.
See Duncan Phillips' photo below, taken during the poll tax riot in London on 31 March 1990.
Note the similarity between the woman wielding a steel pipe, and one of the background flower-throwers in Banksy's piece.
Other shots, the first with the same woman, and both showing that same part of Trafalgar Square:
Relevant footage of the day, sourced from the BBC archive:

Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by met on Dec 1, 2019 7:24:39 GMT 1, [...] Not Sure on this one but its the closest i can find (May-68.-6th-arrond-Boulevard-Saint-Germain.-Students-hurl-projectiles-against-the-police.-Bruno-Barbey) [...]
There is one thing we can say with a degree of certainty about the Flower Thrower / Love is in the Air imagery featuring the single thrower (various designs used for street work, record company illustrations, fine art canvases and prints):
The direct inspiration would be another painting by Banksy himself, created circa 2000โ2001 and shown at Peace is Tough โ the 2001 joint exhibition with Jamie Reid held at The Arches* in Glasgow.
Not sure about the title of the piece, though it might be called Riot.
__________
Regarding the inspiration for that initial painting, it could be any number of riot scenes in a large city.
Looking however at the architecture, the style of street furniture (such as the traffic lights, signage, and 'Keep Left' traffic bollard*), and the clothing worn by the rioters (including a baseball cap and an Adidas tracksuit), my guess is that the source photo(s) was/were shot in the UK and probably around the 1990s โ as opposed to Paris in May 1968.
Although not an exact fit (even when taking into account changes to the cityscape over the last two decades), the background buildings do remind me of London's Square Mile โ near the Royal Exchange, the Bank of England and Mansion House.
Here's a photo showing the Bank of England along with the Royal Exchange:

Martin Whatson - Passรฉ, by met on Dec 1, 2019 5:18:38 GMT 1, Was nowhere mentioned , so I started this thread. Personally I really like this image. Print will be released as a lottery. There is a main Ed of 295, some variants on acrylic, a brass and the washed edition. pics can be found on the release page. Link to Release Page
this here is my favorite variant: Washed, gold leaf, handfinished 50 edition
Can somebody who's familiar with ballet help explain the title here, Passรฉ?
There doesn't seem to be a real connection (at least not one that is apparent to me) between (a) any stage of the passรฉ relevรฉ movement of the legs and (b) the above image. Even less so when taking into account the position of the ballerina's arms.
I wondered if Martin Whatson may have just picked a ballet term at random when naming his print, with minimal concern about what the term actually meant.

Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by met on Nov 28, 2019 22:49:41 GMT 1, Mao Zedong reviewing the Red Guards in 1966. Source image then flipped horizontally.
The Kyoto Garden*, Holland Park, West London. It opened in 1991 and "was a gift from the city of Kyoto to commemorate the long friendship between Japan and Great Britain."
Not quite the "Chinese garden" referred to in Banksy's Existencilism (photo courtesy of cosmic).
Chinese, Japanese. Close enough?

Early Banksy Art, by met on Nov 28, 2019 21:32:51 GMT 1, i deleted Golden Gate Bridge Photo can everyone please delete their posts about it also , extraball , met , godโs ultimate noise, Rubberneck, thanks seen on page 45 in 'Existencilism' Chinese Garden , Holland Park , London
[...] Was this piece ever confirmed? If not, on what basis is it being attributed to Ban ksy? All I see is a basic stencil portrait of Mao, with no wit and no interest. Definitely Banksy, metI canโt remember the location (Regents Park?) but have a vague memory of the piece being topical to something or other. Maybe something connected to the snorkel and mask?
Met, from memory I'm fairly certain that photo is in one of the wall and piece editions. Regardless, I find it amusing to see the chairman snorkeling a shallow man made pigeon pond but perhaps just me.
Cheers, all.
Completely forgot this image had already been published by Banksy.
And, embarrassingly, when looking at the photo again with fresh eyes, I didn't even notice the key elements allowing the piece to make sense โ i.e. snorkel and diving mask.
__________
cosmic โ Minor aside, but I never actually delete my own posts (or remove any of their substance through the 'Edit' function). It's a matter of principle and a discipline I've always imposed on myself.
What this does is force me to step back and consider beforehand everything I write. The idea is to ensure that:
(i) reasonable efforts are made by me to verify the accuracy of factual statements put forward;
(ii) opinions expressed have been thought through and are capable of withstanding challenges or scrutiny;
(iii) comments made by me (especially critical ones) are hopefully rational, balanced and fair; and
(iv) the risk of being drawn into prolonged, heated and petty exchanges with other members is kept to a strict minimum.

Banksy โข Rodeo Girl โข GIFT Print, by met on Nov 28, 2019 20:05:55 GMT 1, In 2008 I attended the Cans Festival in London by invitation of Banksy, I might let this one go for the right price. Unique: includes the festival artist wrist band. - PM bids will be ignored, bids can be posted in this thread - [...]
Unless current personal circumstances are forcing your hand, you may regret selling this piece in the years to come. If there's a way for you to keep the artwork, I would advise doing so.
__________
The wristband offers an interesting insight. It suggests the event was originally meant to be called "Can's Festival" (note the apostrophe).
In my view, changing the name to "The Cans Festival" was the right decision.
Why should we bid on your thread? This isn't an auction house. I would think it's more transparent for everyone involved... but you don't have to participate in buying this piece if you feel in any way uncomfortable about any aspect of my post or have no interest in the art itself.
Insisting on open bidding is indeed more transparent.
But this approach will also exclude collectors who value their privacy โ and who prefer discretion over advertising their expensive art purchases.
You might therefore be shooting yourself in the foot, by reducing the pool of potential buyers.
Good luck to you either way.

Meet artist "The Krank" , by met on Nov 24, 2019 1:07:25 GMT 1, Been experimenting with some fresh calligraphic styles myself.
In the coming weeks, I hope to release my new design (see below) as a series of limited edition prints and originals on canvas.
Just want to try out alternative compositions first, and to play around more with dimensions and colours. Everything needs to be just right. It's a burden one must accept in becoming an artist.
When the time comes, I'll post the purchase links here. Rest assured that my artwork will remain affordably priced.

EDIT: Can't believe I messed up my own piece. The composition should look as it does below, but in blue.

Successful Cover Songs, by met on Nov 18, 2019 6:05:50 GMT 1, How could one dislike a surf band from Toronto? This instrumental cover has been on regular repeat for the last couple of hours.
The Surfrajettes - Toxic (2018) - uploaded by The Surfrajettes
Excellent and interesting adagio cover by an Israeli-French singer-songwriter. She received a godsend from Steve Jobs when he selected one of her songs to launch the MacBook Air laptop in 2008*.
Yael Naim - Toxic (2007) - uploaded by Freedom Citizen
Britney Spears - Toxic (2004) - uploaded by machinist

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by met on Nov 17, 2019 5:35:01 GMT 1, Next up, steamed off wine labels on ebay marked as limited edition prints
Which edition would you go for?
Each label is distinct in composition, and one appears to have an extra-special design:
If forced to choose at gunpoint, I might hesitate between:
(i) bearded mini-Hitler in drag (75 cl bottle, below left); and
(ii) bearded mini-Hitler in drag, traced by someone with a cerebellar disorder (150 cl bottle, below right).

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by met on Nov 16, 2019 18:34:42 GMT 1, This is random but couldnt think where else to put it. Martin Whatsons IG story right now shows a wine that has GWRB and says โBanksy approvedโ on the label.Have you ever heard of this? I cant find it in a quick google search Haven't seen this myself. Was it an attempt at humour by Martin Whatson, or worded as a warning to others?
If not, it seems irresponsible that he would arguably help promote and validate this kind of consumer fraud.

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by met on Nov 16, 2019 18:16:39 GMT 1,
www.mynewsdesk.com/no/brewery-international/pressreleases/banksy-med-nytt-stunt-2932939?site=no&view_policy=1A year ago, "Balloon Girl" by street artist Banksy was sold at the Sotheby's auction house in London. Among other things, the work is known after it was partially shredded at the moment of purchase. In 2017, the picture was named the UK's most beloved art piece of all time. From November 1st, Balloon Girl will be available in Norway - in a place you might not have expected. Norwegian Brewery International / Mission Wine & Spirits has worked closely with the eccentric artist for a long time. The result is that the artwork "Balloon Girl" becomes available on a wine label. Banksy states that this is a great way to reach out to the people. Norwegian-Italian cooperation is crucial - We are a Nordic group and through our and Banksy's lawyers we were offered a very exciting project that we could not say no to, explains Mission Wines & Spirits product manager Jostein Hancke. - We have had a longer collaboration with the Sicilian producer, Tenute Orestiadi, who has made this wine. They are also the driving force behind "Fondazione Orestiadi" - one of Italy's most renowned museums of modern art. It was important to Banksy that the winemaker had a genuine relationship with art, and the museum has purchased works by the artist from before. Thus, the road was short for its own "Banksy" wine, and the wine, Balloon Girl, was born. - The wine is from Gibellina in Sicily and made from the exclusive Frappato grape, which gives a slightly denser and fuller wine due to a sunny climate, says Hancke. - It is a rather full-bodied wine, suitable for foods such as small game, bird and pasta. It gives a good aftertaste of red fruits and dark berries, and is a wine that is liked by most - both for food and alone. Limited initial production The Balloon Girl wine will be available in Vinmonopolet's commissioning committee from November 1st. The bottle comes in a limited initial production of 10,000 bottles for the Scandinavian market, in addition to 480 magnum bottles and 120 three-liter bottles. The date of further launch in the rest of the world is not yet known to us. We see this as a long-term partnership with Banksy. Then we'll see what else he finds on, Hancke concludes.
Something about this doesn't seem quite right...or is it just me? I'd lay odds on this whole press release being a lie based solely on this:
I read the press release, and somehow it seems kind of legit. The wine house is also a museum of art? So who knows? Itโs a reputable wine house at least, makes me a bit curious I feel like Banksy would probably crack smart about drinking and/or the relationship between art & drinking or possibly bring it back to the art and museum. Saying wine bottles are a great way for his art to reach out to people seems a bit suspect to me. I'm probably overthinking things. Makes me want to ask PC though but I'm sure they are swamped.
Let us not waste Pest Control Office's time.
Even leaving aside the wording of the fraudulent press release by Norske Brewery International / Mission Wine & Spirits, it should be clear this is a sham.
By "clear", I mean at least to longer-term enthusiasts who've paid attention to Banksy, whether to:
(i) his artwork / style (like signature style, and use of that signature within a composition); or
(ii) his modus operandi (including, among other things, the priority always given to artistic control and independence).
__________
If there are Banksy fans who do suspect this operation might be genuine, then I believe they need to work harder at familiarising themselves with the artist.
Or consider the possibility that their beliefs and decision-making faculties have been corrupted by wishful thinking. In this respect, research into fallacies* and cognitive biases* may be of interest and assistance.
__________
After drafting my post, I spotted the matter of authenticity was already addressed by JL Broooks:
That bottle has absolutely nothing to do with Banksy. It was already discussed on the Norwegian equivalent of UAA. Just a (smart) sales pitch by this wine producer. He was of course interviewed by a Norwegian newspaper, even saying that โhe was offered loads of original works by Banksyโ as a part of the cooperation. Right.

I'd lay odds on this whole press release being a lie based solely on this: I read the press release, and somehow it seems kind of legit. By "clear", I mean at least to longer-term enthusiasts who've paid attention to Banksy, whether to: (i) his artwork / style (like signature style, and use of that signature within a composition); or (ii) his modus operandi (including, among other things, the priority always given to artistic control and independence). __________ If there are Ban ksy fans who do suspect this operation might be genuine, then I believe they need to work harder at familiarising themselves with the artist. Or consider the possibility that their beliefs and decision-making faculties have been corrupted by wishful thinking. In this respect, research into fallacies* and cognitive biases* may be of interest and assistance. __________ After drafting my post, I spotted the matter of authenticity was already addressed by JL Broooks: That bottle has absolutely nothing to do with Banksy. It was already discussed on the Norwegian equivalent of UAA. Just a (smart) sales pitch by this wine producer. He was of course interviewed by a Norwegian newspaper, even saying that โhe was offered loads of original works by Banksyโ as a part of the cooperation. Right.

Connor Brothers Give Away - CLOSED !, by met on Nov 13, 2019 3:01:51 GMT 1, Since I was one of the lucky ones that scored a nice card from John The Badgers I thought it would be nice to pay it forward. I have 5 show cards of the Connor Brothers. Rather large - 21 x 21 cm - so nice to display if that floats your boat. Anyone can join in , BUT 1. the first 5 that send me a PM will get one - 5 are in - DONE DEAL, sorry2. IF you want to chip in for the actual shipping costs (NL 1,50 / Worldwide 3,00) Of course I have an extra one reserved for met , since I can't bear the thought he would miss out on these and miss the opportunity to add this to his collection as the new crown jewel. Shipping on me. [...]
Although your gesture is generous and much appreciated, I already own a similar image in large format (see below). Made it myself.
Since becoming an artist, thinking of original or fresh ideas has been very difficult for me. I also quickly realised I had zero artistic skill.
But none of this was ever a hurdle in the contemporary art world. My resourcefulness and ability to spot an opportunity were more important. Along with large numbers of reliably-undemanding buyers.
Indeed, now I just follow The Connor Brothers Recipe. Simple. Easy. And it saves me huge amounts of time and effort โ time and effort far better spent on spending all of the money I earn from sales.
THE CONNOR BROTHERS RECIPE
1. Steal somebody else's artwork. [Clark Hulings, circa 1957]
2. Steal somebody else's quote. [Courtesy of The Tempest]
3. Mix with a dash of Photoshop.
4. Presto and voilร !
Now print off endless copies, sign as your own, and sell to the ignorant or undiscerning.
__________
And here is my own artwork (referred to above), which I created using the same process:
Title: We Pretend We're Laughing With You Year: 2019 Medium: Giclรฉe print on paper Signed, dated and numbered by the artist Dimensions: 166 x 106 cm Edition: 150 Price: ยฃ995.00
Edition number 1 of 150 is staying in my personal collection.
The remainder will soon be available for sale to VVIPs โ including select online galleries, and Instagram influencers who communicate by using loads of those red heart and fire emojis in succession.
__________
Just in case that sixth show card is still available, perhaps it could go to another forum member. One who, in this thread and in 50 words or less, answers the following question:
Why does being an informed art collector matter?
If there are multiple entries, maybe the winner could be selected by a comedian.

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by met on Nov 10, 2019 23:32:17 GMT 1,
Thanks for posting.
This band was previously unfamiliar to me. [It's disconcerting that so many of my music discoveries now come from posts on a street art forum, and the choices of music supervisors working in television, film and advertising.]
Looks like Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs is playing a few dates* in the UK this month, followed by another British tour commencing in April 2020.
__________
Leaving aside the memorable band name, the above video is slightly hypnotic. I'm a fan of well-executed, simple concepts.
The use of text in the clip also works, adding to the cinematographic tone. [For amateur typeface enthusiasts, I might be able to save you some time: The Tannenberg, designed (circa 1933โ35) by Erich Meyer for the German typographic foundry, D. Stempel AG.]
Great headpiece too. A work of art, although I could only ever see myself wearing it on a Saturday night.
As for the lead singer, in this video he brings to mind Bluto Blutarsky:
__________
Regarding the song itself, GNT, one can imagine the band having listened to Spread Your Love*.
And then saying, "It's okay, but too effete. Let's ratchet things up โ less Doctor and the Medics; more Black Sabbath and Motรถrhead."

Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by met on Nov 10, 2019 19:03:40 GMT 1, This message is aimed at members who may agree with the following position:
An image without context is a wasted learning opportunity.
__________
If you're thinking about contributing to the thread, in addition to Banksy's source material, consider also including:
1. Name and perhaps nationality / country of origin of fine artist, photographer or filmmaker
2. Name of artwork, photograph or film, where applicable
3. Date of creation or release
4. Other details which could be interesting to someone who's ignorant about the source. For example (to the extent applicable):
(i) dimensions; (ii) current location; (iii) historical context, background information, curious anecdotes; and/or (iv) links to relevant web pages.
__________
It's worth reminding ourselves that forum visitors are diverse โ including in terms of their age, level of art-history and political-history knowledge, and cultural reference points.
While most here are likely to recognise a still from Pulp Fiction, that may not be the case for absolutely everyone. Especially since the film was released in 1994, before some members were even born.
A fortiori, how many of us are familiar with an artist like Jacques-Louis David, the period in which he painted, or the title of simply one of his paintings?
And query how many members would recognise an old photo showing the aftermath of a few people (including a US President) getting shot, and then say to themselves, "Yeah, that's what happens when you try to impress Jodie Foster."
__________
Providing this kind of additional information will clearly take far more time than just posting photos.
But there's potentially an educational benefit for everyone when we push ourselves to make greater efforts and to scratch beneath the surface.

Name the artist....please, by met on Nov 10, 2019 18:07:44 GMT 1, So I was going through the art folder and found the following [...] For the life of me I cant remember where I picked this up from or who the artist is??? Anyone help?? Cheers
Blimey. That is particular.
All I can work out are the initials "A.U."
In case somebody knows who actually created the work, consider private messaging the original poster.
But if you insist on disclosing further details about the artist here, check the relevant statutes in your jurisdiction beforehand, keeping in mind we're on a public forum.
Given the work in question, this could be deemed a special case โ because revealing a name might lead to the artist being taunted or ridiculed. So expose their identity, if you must. Just make sure you don't in the process break any laws relating to doxing.

Good things come in small packages , by met on Nov 6, 2019 1:36:03 GMT 1, A few pieces [...] [...]
The artist can't really be blamed for revisiting one of his old themes, especially since it was popular and successful for him.
What's disappointing, however, is the apparent lack of development. With the above two pieces, it looks like there's actually been a regression. The earlier relief printing of stuffed toys was in full-length. And striking โ in particular for its negative image / x-ray aesthetic.
But those new half-length prints on canvas seem almost like pastiches by comparison.
To members who aren't familiar with Geoffrey Ricardo*, he's an eclectic artist, using different mediums and visual styles. You can search his name along with "stuffed toy" in Google Images for additional examples of past work I'm referring to.
Check out as well the 2013 video below. A little cutesy and possibly too long (3:03), though it does a decent job of showing his process for the prints on paper:

Early Banksy Art, by met on Nov 6, 2019 0:02:42 GMT 1, i have seen this checkbook vandalism piece before but never the piece on the other wall- does anyone have a better pic of this one? step into my office?
"Mr Pelling โ Step into my office..."
This is Banksy cheerfully goading Andrew Pelling*, in a "Catch me if you can" kind of way.
At the time, Pelling was chair of the Graffiti Investigative Committee at the Greater London Authority (GLA).
__________
The location is where Monkey Queen was later painted for Banksy's anti-Jubilee street party in May 2002, marking Elizabeth II's 50-year reign:

BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by met on Nov 4, 2019 0:09:44 GMT 1,
Congratulations, johanna.
In your position, I'd be tempted to write to GDP about their template email to future winners โ suggesting they could change "in two days time" to "two days later" (or, as an unhappy compromise, "in two days' time").
But query whether they would thank you, or reply with "Upon further reflection, we decided to cancel your purchase."

Banksy RAT Print, Gross Domestic Product , by met on Nov 3, 2019 22:49:50 GMT 1,
As long as he's happy with it, who cares what anyone thinks? Whoever posts it on a forum?
Concise reply, and persuasive.
Anyone who shares on a forum clearly does care about what others think.
Of course, that also seems very normal. Imagine living with the kind of person who was never interested in receiving feedback of any kind. You would need to hide a knife under the pillow, and learn to sleep with your eyes open.
__________
Regarding critique generally, it's worth keeping context in mind.
We aren't guests at a formal dinner party, where not offending the host might take priority over the expression of honest opinions.
This is an art forum, for adults who possess adult-levels of resilience. Forthright commentary should be actively promoted. Even at the risk of causing upset to those among us who are thin-skinned. A few members do give the impression of taking issue with sometimes being on the receiving end of criticism, ribbing or sarcasm. One could argue they are perhaps unsuited to the genres of street art and graffiti โ which rely so heavily on irreverence.
A separate point is that when somebody challenges our art-purchase, framing or hanging decisions, it pushes us to question ourselves, to think again, to think differently. And that's one way we grow as collectors.
So if the goal is to keep learning and progressing, then each of us is far better served by a bit of flak than by comforting pats on the head.
__________
urbanwear โ The fact this framing style isn't to my taste is unimportant. But the aspect you may wish to reconsider is the tight cropping. For a couple of reasons:
1. Aesthetic: At least to my eye, the print looks better when the rat is less cramped in. Moreover, it doesn't seem unreasonable to suspect the artist himself felt the image (when not added to a clock face) worked best in the format released, i.e. with a relatively large amount of negative space.
2. Conservation: Over time, UV light and visible light are likely to result in some fading to the paper. There would then be colour unevenness between the exposed part and the area currently covered by your mat. Collectors who wish to mitigate this problem typically float-mount works on paper (although, granted, it's tricky to do well with newsprint) โ so that any discolouration occurs evenly and less noticeably.
I think it's good to see people posting pictures of their framed work because considering all the stuff that gets purchased, we don't get many framed pictures. We should encourage more people to post more pictures. Also like to see some variety. We're in full agreement here.

Che Guevara poster - Banksy, by met on Nov 1, 2019 23:59:47 GMT 1, Is anyone is looking to sell one please pm me
What steps would you take to ensure you were buying an authentic poster? As opposed to a convincing forgery, sold with a heavy heart by the most charming and knowledgeable of con artists.
Fakes are a drag. But on the plus side, they typically come with delightfully engaging stories about how things were "back in the day".
__________
Over the last six months, I myself have been putting together a due diligence checklist for this kind of scenario โ regarding items beyond the remit Pest Control Office has set for itself, yet so rare that very few people could ever confirm whether such items truly were genuine.
My list so far:
1. Place faith in god almighty.
2. Pray and hope for the best.
3. Does the seller have kind eyes? If so, that's good. Especially if my circumstances change and I have to re-sell. I can then assure potential buyers that the guy from the internet who sold me the piece for four figures:
(i) had kind eyes; (ii) complimented my taste in art; and (iii) confirmed that, back in the day, those really were the days.
4. [Note to self: Work in progress. Think of other safeguards against fraud. A serious checklist should have at least five things in it.]
5.

@cozycurvature โ Thank you for posting all of your photos. I would probably never otherwise have seen this early work.

Early Banksy Art, by met on Nov 1, 2019 17:23:58 GMT 1, Similar in style to the work he put up in 1999 at the Carlton Arms Hotel in NYC: [...] I love it when people come out and say he cant paint because of using stencils.. 20 years ago he was making work that's still better than 99% of his haters.
With this use of comparative language about making work, it sounds as if you're suggesting Ban ksy's art is disliked by a large number of his fellow artists. Although I'm unaware of many who've been openly critical, it would be interesting to hear the ones whose work you believe is better than Ban ksy's โ namely, which specific "hater" artists you place in the 1% category. This isn't about who I think is better or not, theres a known rift of graffiti artists hating on stencils and banksy in particular as it's not 'proper art' or 'he cant paint'. When the fact is that he was a top notch skilled writer long before he touched a stencil.
No worries, I misunderstood your initial post. My impression had been you'd compared Banksy's work against that of specific artist detractors to arrive at your conclusion.
The interest for me here was that (leaving aside unverifiable, general assertions sometimes made about the subject), I was aware of very few artists who've publicly criticised Banksy's work. So if there had been any particular names you were referring to, I'd have researched their art and made the comparison myself to see if our opinions aligned โ regarding both your 99% group and, of greater curiosity to me, the 1% group.
__________
As for the use of stencils being controversial within traditional graffiti culture, I don't believe anyone would disagree with you. We could also broaden this to cover the graffiti scene's ambivalence towards street art more generally, including legal murals.
That said, I have yet to personally witness graffiti writers deny that Banksy's work is "proper art". Many don't even refer to themselves as artists. [They may see themselves as just writers, taggers or vandals, who should be judged by different (or additional) criteria โ like prolificness, level of destruction caused, or the difficulty, risk and danger involved in getting up at certain locations.] The criticism I actually have seen expressed is that Banksy's stencil-based work is not proper graffiti โ this, however, being a different argument altogether.
With respect to "he can't paint", I've never heard this coming from another artist or writer. The closest would be self-deprecating remarks by Banksy himself regarding his own skill set. Or regular comments by non-artists about feet and hands not being his strong suit.
I donโt think any specific graffiti writers but as a whole I think the whole thing about being a stencil artist has been frowned upon by hardcore writers for years. In relation to this point, I suspect we are all on the same page.
Similar in style to the work he put up in 1999 at the Carlton Arms Hotel in NYC: [...] I love it when people come out and say he cant paint because of using stencils.. My impression had been you'd compared Ban ksy's work against that of specific artist detractors to arrive at your conclusion. The interest for me here was that (leaving aside unverifiable, general assertions sometimes made about the subject), I was aware of very few artists who've publicly criticised Ban ksy's work. So if there had been any particular names you were referring to, I'd have researched their art and made the comparison myself to see if our opinions aligned โ regarding both your 99% group and, of greater curiosity to me, the 1% group. __________ As for the use of stencils being controversial within traditional graffiti culture, I don't believe anyone would disagree with you. BANKSY Gross Domestic Productโข, by met on Nov 1, 2019 16:22:07 GMT 1, You have just broken many adults hearts๐ , like kids believe in father xmas a few adults believe in banksy as one, let them be , don't spoil the fun ๐๐จโ๐จ Certain posters on the past TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY FOUR PAGES, have a thinly veiled sheen of GREED to them, and that's being polite, that's ME being polite! The main reason for this campaign was with regard to raising funds to buy another rescue boats for migrants, people desperate to come to this Country, and in the time this Thread has been active we were all unfortunate to bare witness to a real World event where migrants DIED in the back of a lorry, something highlighted by Banksy in one of his pieces...........but.........in over TWO HUNDRED PAGES how many posters addressed this?!............EXACTLY!!!!!!!!! Let's not be daft, AGAIN, PEST CONTROL/BANKSY IS A BUSINESS!!! All the selfish, childish moaning, P.C.L. know who you are, you've done yourself no favours. Be good if some of you spent a bit of time addressing REAL WORLD issues instead of moaning about sending multiple entries etc on line. YES, the promise of ownership could be life changing to some people, but. the demonstration of thinly veiled greed by some posters on here is, to be frank, DISGUSTING! Like I said, I'm just glad that P.C.L. are watching, and said posters have shot themselves in the foot.
If your objective is to change people's opinions and behaviour, then I'd argue it's worth considering a shift in tone (and reassessing the use of upper case and exclamation marks).
To my eyes, the above comes across as overwrought. That risks allowing your post to be too easily dismissed by readers, making it less effective or ineffective โ and potentially even counterproductive.
__________
In addition, it seems imprudent to misrepresent "The main reason for this campaign".
The sign in the Gross Domestic Productโข window display stated the reason:
This shop has come about as a result of legal action. A greeting cards company are (sic) trying to sieze (sic) legal custody of the name Banksy from the artist, who has been advised the best way to prevent this is to sell his own range of branded merchandise.
Regarding the support of migrant rescue missions in the Mediterranean, that is clearly very important to the artist and was indeed expressly referred to โ but only on the label stating where proceeds would go for the sale of the Early Learning Counting Set.
The Welcome Mat is also relevant, albeit separate. The GDPโข label here stated all proceeds would be retained locally (local to detainment camps in Greece) to help refugees access key services.
