Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by gmh1910 on May 7, 2018 21:03:05 GMT 1, Personally, I like to have 1 or 2 inches of the back mat (float mount) showing. This allows for the whole sheet especially full sheet prints / deckled edges to be fully seen. I try to choose a neutral and complimentary acid free mat for the float - similar hue to match the paper or a black. I have a Brainwash listed which is float mounted and gives an idea of my approach. I am not a fan of "cramming" a picture in a frame - give it space and let it shine. Corny but a well framed piece can make all the difference.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by andyroo0312 on May 8, 2018 6:40:55 GMT 1, Hi really need some advice ,have just purchased a large printers proof approx 90x90 to include the border ,the difficulty is that the artist has written notes down two of the sides so matting is out ,my framer is worried that floating such a large print in will bow in the middle ,any help very much appreciated The best float mounting I have seen with large prints ( up to 110cm x 130 ) is where the print is mounted with jap mulberry paper on to a piece of foam core that is cut 2-3cm smaller than the print then the foam core is mounted to the back mount as usual. The end result looks amazing. The foam core keeps the print very well supported and the thickness of the foam core gives the illusion that the print is really just floating in the air.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by cest on Mar 1, 2019 22:09:46 GMT 1, Hey folks, I'm in the middle of framing a bunch of stuff and my framer likes to use a quarter of an inch board sandwiched between the mat board and the print. This quarter inch board (from here on out I will call this a riser) is trimmed too about an eighth to quarter of an inch all the way around so it gives a three-dimensional effect to the Print with the final product.
This is little bit of a departure from what I've seen other float mounts where there is no riser and the print lays flat on the mat board.
On one of the posters that I got done I noticed waviness on the edges of the poster, making me wonder if my prints framed in that same way are at risk. I figure it's the weight of the paper and the humidity in my house that would be deciding factor of how much damage this will cause. I do have a built-in humidity control function, necessary if you live in Charleston South Carolina.
Does anyone have a opinion on this method? Any issues that you have found?

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by rjf76 on Mar 1, 2019 22:21:59 GMT 1, Comes down to personal taste really....I really like a raised float mount! Iโve got both large and small framed this way and has never made a difference to print condition moving forward.
As you say, humidity course play a part - donโt have that problem in the UK much!

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by soupy on Mar 1, 2019 22:47:40 GMT 1, float mounts are always more susceptible to waviness.... but as others have said it is the humidity issue. mattes are more restrictive on the print so waviness isn't as much of an issue (but still can occur).
as for the riser.... i personally prefer it because depending on lighting.... it can cast shadows on the back and accentuate the print edges (versus just having it flat on the backing).

Email the sales team if you have any questions, they're really helpful

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by Fast Eddie on Jan 13, 2020 17:25:39 GMT 1, I have run several experiments using both S hinge and V hinge float mounting and fully reversible archival materials. I did all on practice paper and then on cheap prints. Totally doable and a lot of fun, but time consuming. I did not cook my wheat paste, but short of that I tried best practice. It provides a deeper connection with your art, I feel.
But do not do it on your expensive stuff. You will regret it.

Fast Eddie thanks for the advice, it's not for an expensive print but I think I'm going to follow your recommendation and do some practice mounts with paper first!

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by Deleted on Jan 13, 2020 22:56:40 GMT 1, If the print is on heavy paper I would recommend cutting an angled slot through the mount board and passing the archival tape through it so you can stick it on the back of the board and the sticky side will be facing outward on the front. The angle of the slot /cut simply means you can open it up a little to get the tape through by pushing on each side of the board. This is the only way we have found to make sure that the print does not slip in time.
this! i learned this trick of the trade a couple years back.

By the way, I am not even good with my hands, so if I can do a S hinge, 90% of the forum will be able to do it.
The remaining 10% should staple the print to the board or dry mount it with Gorilla glue because of evident lack of effort.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by rinz on Feb 19, 2020 16:35:57 GMT 1, Hey guys. I've just got a picture from my framer.
I choose to float it. I can see, that the paper is kinda wavy in the bottom - flat in the sides and the top.
Is this normal or something i should worry about?

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by Happy Shopper on Feb 19, 2020 17:46:46 GMT 1, It's normal for float mounting... usually doesn't show much, but paper can expand and contract... also, maybe, because the print was rolled at some point. It happens behind a mount too, but you tend not to notice so much.

All good

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by og on Jun 4, 2022 13:48:34 GMT 1, Hi,
Just wondering if anyone had any ideas for framing this print.
It is hand-finished and also got a white gold mask. I spoke to the framer this morning and he was against floating it as he was worried it could damage the hand-finishing / gold leaf. Ideally Iโd float it rather than mount it because of the deckled edge but not really sure what to do without pushing the glass against the image.
Thanks!

Normally framers donโt want to float mount because the paper will wave after time - that is why framer is apprehensive sometimes.
I do think it would look great with a double mount of white (as main) and gold to bring out the gold leaf.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by inefficiency of on Mar 12, 2024 18:23:40 GMT 1, Just got a lovely David Shillinglaw print back from the framers, went for a float mount like most of my framed pieces, and noticed this is particularly waveyโฆ.
Is this anything to worry about, is this just how it goes sometimes with floating work, will it relax down ? Or should I mention it when I go to collect my next piece?
* Editโฆ. Was thinking maybe I should have let the paper relax longer and flatten before getting framed?
