Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by rabbitlegs on Jul 23, 2007 21:59:53 GMT 1, Im currently trying my hand at basic framing with varying success. My question is how the hell do you display deckled edges and manage to get the print looking like its floating, but without sticking it to anything? I have looked at several morons and an elbow-toe recently and just cannot suss out how its done. I dont want to hide my fancy edges with mountboard.
Perhaps its best left for the professionals but would welcome some advice.

Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by Mister Frame Man on Jul 24, 2007 6:59:14 GMT 1, Japanese hinging! Which is...Small hinges made out of conservation tissue paper which are lightly gummed. You then have to moisten, let them almost go off, then stick to the reverse of your artwork in certain places. The hinges are then fed through slits of your backing card and stuck down in place, holding your artwork in place - Floating! This method is 100% reversible, all you have to do is moisten the hinges very slightly with a special liquid and the gum dissolves leaving your print untouched. Problems occur when too much moisture is applied and you end up with a nasty bump coming through the front of your print.
Be careful - Not an easy process!

I just took a print in for float mounting.. they said they just use two spots of liquid gum on the back at the top, nothing on the bottom unless absolutely necessary.. but maybe a couple of spots.. they assured me that it was all reversible.. which is the best method in your opinion.

Wise words misterframeman.
I've tried this technique and ended up with this very problem. I'm glad to say that I was sensible enough not to try it on any of my expensive prints. Though since my failures, I've decided to leave float mounting to the professionals.

Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by CR on Nov 12, 2006 23:08:28 GMT 1, hey,
assuming all the new prints will have the deckled edge border i was wandering how people think would be best to mount them.
i've found a picture of one in a frame that talks about mounting the print to plywood!! The effect looks amazing but not sure how it would affect the print!

Sounds like you want to 'float mount' it/them & if it's done properly it harms the print not at all. Under no circumstances do you want it glued/fixed to plywood or whatever backboard you end up using.

Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by corblimeylimey on Nov 17, 2006 13:22:44 GMT 1, I've just come back from a framers, I asked about float mount framing Applause (it's huge) probably will cost around £250!! but I think it'll be worth it, they had a really nice Peter Blake fag packet screen print in a white frame floating mount, impressed me.

Like you already mentioned, having it floated is the best option IMO. Because of the deckled edges, which I think would be a waste to cover up. Be sure to use spacers to stop the print from touching the glass. Though... I doubt any framer will be stupid enough to float a piece without any spacers

Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by themightyreds on May 6, 2007 0:36:34 GMT 1, I agree that float mounting is the way to go with the morons piece (show off those edges!) my one will be getting re-framed this way once funds permit. But why is it such a bad way to go when framing to have the print touching the glass? I've asked PoW, framers and other screen printers about this and none yet have said to me that it is harmful...

If it's perspex (or plexiglas), it's fine 'cos that material is inert. If it's regular glass though, the inks on the print may react with the glass and stick... which would be bad for the print. At least... this is what my framer told me

Hi there
There is a possibility that prints can get stuck to the glass, especially if there is any damp about. This is discussed in the framing section in more detail. have a look through as you will pick up lots more info.
If the print is signed or valuable its worth protecting properly and using acid free mounts etc will help.

Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by ct on Dec 10, 2007 20:07:04 GMT 1, Hi
Im about to get my first print framed at my local framers, they seem to know what they are talking about except one thing that worries me.
Im wanting to get my print floating mounted and they have mentioned that to keep the print off the glass it would have to be secured to the backing somehow with something they say wont damage the print.
Does this sound normal? does such a thing exist which wont damage the print in the long term but secure it?
Thanks for any help

Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by dvda on Aug 4, 2008 16:05:56 GMT 1, pardon my ignorance, as i am a n00b to all of this art/framing business...
will float mounting a print damage the artwork?
my framer was talking about using double sided tape, so i balked on float mounting, as it seemed like something which could potentially damage my print...
is she just a hack or is using tape standard procedure for float mounting?
on a side note, if anyone knows a good framer in NYC, feel free to PM me with their info!
cheers. d

Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by curiousgeorge on Aug 4, 2008 17:47:38 GMT 1, If done correctly float mounting will not damage the art, for a perfect result i would use rice paper and starch paste.
Some framers will use double sided tape, while a few will use the above method. Shop around until you find a framer that pushes all your buttons, in terms of what you want to hear

Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by Francis on Aug 11, 2008 3:04:56 GMT 1, I've never framed a canvas before. I would like to get one of my canvases floated. I want it to be done in the most archival way possible without damage to the canvas. What should I know before I bring it to my framer? Do I specifically mention that he does not use certain items on it? What do I ask him to use?
Cheers
