Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by psycho666 on May 22, 2012 21:26:44 GMT 1, I'm a bit tight for money, so I usually just buy custom made frames online for my prints.
This usually just involves carefully measuring the print and working out what size frame and mount will work.
This is fine for framing with a mount, but I'm thinking about float mounting one of my prints, which is a bit new to me.
How is the print usually held in place?
Are they actually stuck to something that holds it in place on the backing board?
Or, this is probably totally wrong, is the print held between two sheets of glass or perspex to give the impression it is floating?
Thanks,
Psycho666

I float mounted a print using some lineco hayaku hinging tape, following these steps: forum.Expressobeans/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=62429
I framed a Keyes "Stampede" print and it has been kinda tricky, since it's a huge print but with small prints you can do it alone and it's quite easy. just remember to measure things twice... even better if three times.

I'm a bit put off by the usual way of float mounting a print... so I might try the following - comments welcome...
I was thinking of buying to sheets of perspex and putting the print between them - the static should hold the print in place. Then just put it in the frame as usual... but with a sheet of paper over the backing board to give it some colour.
How does that sound?
At least the would mean the print can be removed and there is no sticking.

Croydon!
The print I'm considering getting mounted like this is this DECYCLE one:
shop.prettyportal.de/products/decycle-down-to-business-red-edition
"hand moulded paper (300g)"
I might re-think this once I receive it, but I thought the paper looks quite interesting.

Not true. Plexi doesn't transfer heat like glass does. It can be directly touching plexi

Float Mounting • Deckled Edge, by jonti on Sept 24, 2012 21:12:45 GMT 1, Yea he said he would blob the silicon on reverse of the print onto the board. I was clear about the value of the prints and the conservation standards I was after. He said he had done it before for a gallery without any issue. He said the silicon is easily rolled off with a finger off the paper. I think its the same stuff that sticks credit cards to the letter when the bank sends you a new one?

Product Information Pritt Glue Dots Individually formed adhesive glue dots for all your art and craft needs Easy to use and apply - simply apply using backing paper, by peeling paper away from dot to position exactly where you need it No drying time required No liquid glue mess Child safe (not suitable for children under 36 months) Acid-free Repositionable 64 dots per wallet Packed 12 wallets Pritt Glue Dots Acid-free on Backing Paper Repositionable 64 per Wallet 1444965 Pack of 12
Hhmmmmmmmmm?!?!?

I know nothing about framing, but if it's the same stuff that they use to stick credit cards to letters, then I'd be tempted to give it a miss. I just went and checked some of my old "You have a new card" letters (yes, I keep them. It's my problem, let's not talk about it) and the older ones have a grease mark from the glue. A bit like the mark left from Blu-Tack.
They could have changed the glues, or he might be talking about a different material altogether. But if it's the same stuff, then it's up there with spray mount (seen that done), staples, bulldog clips, etc.
I'd be wary.

Not heard of that before either...
Id try it at home myself if you have any laying around, see if you get any residue once rolled off... I would have thought it would stain paper, but i could be wrong..

No matter how well we frame them they will eventually fade, degrade and get old. Do some research on conservation framing and make a decision you're comfortable with dude.
Just stay away from the bathroom sealant and pritt stick.
