Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by iamzero on Jun 24, 2013 0:41:12 GMT 1, I have hayaku on all of my prints and think the residue you might be talking about is a tan/ yellow looking acrylic left behind sometimes and apparently won't harm or affect the print. If you're cockling the paper then you're using too much water dude.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by natstan on Jun 24, 2013 3:33:17 GMT 1, That's what I'm using at the moment for the print, float mounted with mylar corners, black mat black frame. I was thinking it looked rather 'unprofessional' - not that I'm a professional framer anyway. Surprised to hear that float mounting with mylar corners showing is common in the States...
PM Sent Trust nothing but rice paper and wheat starch Mylar corners are fine to in addition to the above. In the States it's not unusual to have the mylar showing when floating.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by natstan on Jun 24, 2013 9:20:25 GMT 1, It's not so much about what color is that mark, or whether it affects the integrity of the paper. But I've always had the idea that any marks which are not originally intended to be on a piece of art (be it front or back) will actually affect its perceived value? No?

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by natstan on Jun 24, 2013 9:28:25 GMT 1, Also, I'm thinking if this tab is an inert material like mylar and it can stick (and removed without any difficulties), wouldn't this actually be a 'legitmate' way to float mount a print? But of course, I can only start using and discover many decades later if this thing really works as an archival framing material...

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by 11 on Jun 24, 2013 12:22:45 GMT 1, Mmm. Professional framer advising clients on best materials to use for DIY framing.....
DIY is always a consideration given the cost of some framing but at what point do you decide whether to go professional or DiY - even some of the cheapest prints can become massively sought after (doe miss universe ยฃ65 cost to ยฃ1500 secondary). At ยฃ50 I wouldn't be to fussed with that is on the print as long as I like it, at ยฃ1500 my expectations would be a bit different.
I dont see a bit of staining on the back as an issue but view tape marks (where a layer of the Print Paper has come away with the tape) as more of a concern. It seems that the ability to remove a piece from its bindings with minimal damage is almost as important as getting it hung in the first place.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by Warm Gun on Jun 24, 2013 12:27:38 GMT 1, My framer has scared the bejesus out of me regarding having stuff float mounted. In his opinion there is no risk free way of doing it and according to him you can never guarantee that the paper won't absorb the adhesive and discolour or reacted in other ways. (maybe he just doesn't like doing it) I personally love float mounted prints but will always be weary of them especially after reading some of the horror stories on this very forum.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by kainers on Jul 10, 2014 23:46:30 GMT 1,
Hello,
I sent off a Pure Evil double exposure print to get float mounted, I just realized I heard the framer mention something about after he makes the things that hold the print to the mount board, that the glass will then press down on the image and hold it in place. I feel like when I see float mounted things on this forum there is a gap between the image and the glass, but I have never seen or looked for something like that in person. I guess my question is what do I need to know to make sure this comes out correctly?
This looks floated
Thanks

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by settingson on Jul 11, 2014 0:04:56 GMT 1, My understanding was that if it is float mounted it is attached from behind the print and the glass shouldn't be holding it in place. The spacers give depth and keep the print away from the glass as far as I'm aware. I would be questioning him if he was actually intending to float it if what he said to you about the glass was heard correctly. There are some great threads in the framing section on here for finding out more about it.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by kainers on Jul 11, 2014 0:41:14 GMT 1, Thanks everyone for the quick replies! I appreciate it very much. I called and said I wanted to make sure you were using spacers and the glass wasn't touching the print, and he said "I can if you want." I didn't really ask if he ever planned on using them, but it sounded like I heard correctly in the first place and he wasn't going to.
And AFR1KA, that's a good idea. I live in Las Vegas, I will make a new thread and ask about that.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by Poly Mindset on Jul 11, 2014 6:20:46 GMT 1, I've been told by numerous framers that glass touching an image is not a good thing because the print and especially photos will eventually stick to the glass. However, if it is museum conservation plexiglass/acrylic then the image or even a photo will not stick to it and the image can touch and you don't need spacers. Has anyone ever had a problem with museum plexi/acrylic? Please chime in.

If you have damp paper touching the glazing, inert or not the print will stick to it in time.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by Poly Mindset on Jul 11, 2014 7:26:45 GMT 1, I've read that on a purely molecular level it is the lead in glass that draws moisture from the air, since plexi has no lead no moisture is created. Additionally, the old adage that a picture needs to "breathe" has been dismissed by conservationists. Just being the devil's advocate here. Does anyone have any reference to any studies done on this topic, cause it sure seems like a very gray area.

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by Deleted on Jul 11, 2014 7:35:52 GMT 1, Listen to ling, i know a lot of framers and they vary massively. Anyone can open a framing shop, a couple of grand will get you most of the equipment needed 2nd hand and off you go. Ive seen shocking practices from apparently reputable framers as well so choose wisely, hopefully someone on here can recommend a framer near your area. Theres a framers guild called gcf, it means theyve at least wen t throught a course to teach them the basics but it doesnt guarantee they follow through with the teachings, again i know quite a few gcf framers, some are very good and others not so much, the best thing is recommendation from others if possible

Float Mounting โข Deckled Edge, by johnnyh on Jul 11, 2014 14:06:46 GMT 1, Would suggest that your framer should be offering different options, techniques and explaining them. Giving you advice on the piece to be framed. If they are not you should probably be looking else where. You should be making an informed decision that meets your budget whatever it is. I always use the same frame but different glass and techniques depending on the piece
Eg. Separate to the glass issue but the fact that this has been raised. I would suggest more important is how is the piece being fixed to the mount and what is it being mounted on.
Cost is always an issue with framing but again a good framer can explain the pluses and minus's of different techniques and glass and also there price impact.
good way to find a good framer is to ask decent local galleries who is a good framer locally. They are well connected to framers and also as mentioned by Castle know who locally is a bit of a disaster. Galleries also understand the benefits and have experience of protecting the art work.

maybe the framer doesn't have a good selection of different height mouldings.
