Will Banksy ever release another print?, by Deleted on Aug 6, 2014 18:59:03 GMT 1, just thinking about this the other night. Yes, obviously I'd love to own any Banksy print that's already been released, but at the same time, I wouldn't feel it was truly mine - I'd feel I was just buying a part of Banksy's history. I'd much prefer to own a print that came out since I started following him (ok - obessing after him) which unfortunately, I only really became aware of him in the past few years, so I have zero options.
Kinda like buying a classic LP. Yes - great to listen to, but it would never compare to your favorite album that came out when you were 18 and you listened to it everyday and that and changed your life. Yes dad, I agree The Rolling Stones are the greatest band ever, but give me Sonic Youth/Weezer/Magnetic Fields etc...
so yeah, I know the internet would explode and people would be trampled wherever it was released, but I'd love for Banksy to release a new print (though I don't think that will ever happen)

Will Banksy ever release another print?, by Jimmy Oscar on Aug 6, 2014 23:56:38 GMT 1, Release 500 prints.
100 signed at 8,000 UK.
400 at 3500 UK.
Just about right to put the low life cheap flippers off and seems to be market value.
Look at the OS sale - even at the crazy price they charged people bought to sell on - but hasn't really worked as they're hard to shift.
Banksy is slightly different of course but the flip movement would be minimal.
Wouldn't stop everything but there's a better chance it would. I know not everyone could afford one - but sorry that's life, not everyone can afford a Porsche.

If it's cheap - it'll be flipped like crazy. It's that simple.
If it's market price with a 10% premium - it'll still be flipped but a lot less.
If you want an affordable banksy release - something less than 1000UK it'll be the most flipped thing in history.

Then you might as well release an unlimited poster.
What do you mean by a timed edition? Released slowly?
Could be release one a day for two years - if it's cheap it's going to be flipped to market value. Simple.

Will Banksy ever release another print?, by Deleted on Aug 7, 2014 0:39:06 GMT 1, by timed edition I mean, say for 2 hours on a particular day, anyone can buy the print. after the 2 hours they are no longer available. If 3000 people bought it in the 2 hours, then its an edition of 3000. If 9,458 people bought it, it's an edition of 9,458 etc.
other artists have done releases like this and they've been very well received.

Correct it's not practicable.
A banksy unsigned is worth 2500uk minimum - so sell a new print at 3500 and it will be flipped on a very small scale.
Yes it's expensive - but that's his price - that's life.
Otherwise you can't complain about flipping.
Look at whatson - half the ballet print is on eBay for 700US. So sell them at 800 and it won't be flipped.
Pretty simple really.

Will Banksy ever release another print?, by Deleted on Aug 7, 2014 1:07:36 GMT 1, people are only willing to pay these high prices because demand is so high and supply is so low. if there were more prints, they wouldn't be considered as valuable (which is probably a motivating factor as to why they will never do a timed release - it would probably lower Banksy prices across the board)
take the MW example. I think the edition is 150 (i could be wrong). If they made 500 of them, there's a good chance they wouldn't be valued nearly as much. also, some people might not buy them - a lot of collectors prefer that edition sizes stay low so if they're lucky enough to get the print at cost, it's worth more

Will Banksy ever release another print?, by stylus on Aug 7, 2014 8:54:59 GMT 1, The unfortunate reality is that is effectively a no win situation. I like to think that Banksy has historically released prints at the prices he (and POW) chose because he wanted to make his art accessible to regular folk.
Here's the rub:
- If he releases a regular sized edition at the usual pricing, there will be a substantial amount of flipping as usual, and the logistics of the release will be horrible.
- If he releases a regular sized edition at market value, then regular folk will be priced out, and they'll be reserved for only the wealthy. I don't think he wants that.
- If he releases an enormous edition at a lower price, then it's a recipe for a bit of a headache one way or another - RSI if he signs them all... scores of people attempting to flip them anyway (possibly getting their fingers burned in the process)... A risk of flooding the market and denting secondary market prices, which may in turn affect the pricing he can achieve for originals - which pay the bills (remember what happened to the market prices for Micallef's work after he released Impure Idols and GIWTBB)
On top of all that, the last several Banksy print releases have been a big logistical headache for POW: Beefed up website... Crashed anyway. Choose your weapon release in person - marred by a bunch of thugs, who forced their way to the front etc etc.
I can kind of understand why it's an easier life to focus elsewhere (like better out than in etc).

it would be closer to 5 million than 1 million !!!!!
When the donuts dropped, more than half million email addresses went into the hat........ (How many years ago ?) one thing could be assured is that flippers would still try and in ten years time they would still have 8 prints on top of the wardrobe, they would be on carboot stalls and ebay would melt.

Will Banksy ever release another print?, by stylus on Aug 7, 2014 9:38:59 GMT 1, Maybe he couldnt give a fk about the secondary market prices, they are nothing to do with him, are they?. Possibly. But I would suggest that there's at least some degree of linkage between prices achieved in the secondary market, and the prices an artist is able to achieve in selling their originals.
The secondary market has no direct benefit to Banksy, but I'd assume that he has more than a passing interest in how much he can realise for one of his originals.

It is.
I seem to remember he was a bit pissed off about the number of Flag prints that were flipped but he did sell that cheap to raise money for a charity he had some personal desire to help so understandable really, do the fans a turn with a cheap print but then some make more off it than the charity, not good.
Release 500 prints. I believe banksy's philosophy is (or at least was when prints were being released) to release prints at a price that made them more accessible. And that outweighed the risk/inevitability that they will get flipped. I like that. Lesser of two evils init? It is.
