Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by yoyosh on Aug 14, 2014 22:23:10 GMT 1, this has what exactly to do with urban art? It has as much to do with urban art as the thread that has been up for weeks regarding Isreal v Hamas, or the thread RIP Rik Mayal, or the thread about a rare record store closing. With half of street art revolving around police abuse (See Banksy, Mau Mau, Ben Naz, La Staa, etc.), it is no less relevant than half the threads on this board. i'm here for the street art. there's several internet forums dedicated to current events, politics, racism, record stores, etc etc. Mods, perhaps there's room for an "anything goes" tab for all of these gentlemen interested in discussing things other than art?

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by randomname on Aug 14, 2014 23:55:50 GMT 1, Police shoot white people too.
I think part of the problem has to do with a large number of military vets joining police forces. They're trained to escalate confrontations and to use deadly force whenever a suspect doesn't immediately comply.
But I also think part of the perceived increase in police brutality has to do with the prevalence of camera phones, combined with social media. There has been police brutality for as long as there have been police. But it's much easier to prove now. And to spread the word.

True, they do, but black teens and other minority groups seem to be targeted at a disproportionate rate.
And agree on the social media/camera phone point. Remember the Oscar Grant incident?

That does seem to be the case. But most cases also seem to involve the poor and many involve the mentally disabled. So I don't think it's as simple as racism, though that probably plays a part in it.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by kultur on Aug 15, 2014 18:27:03 GMT 1, Should we all change our tone and even the subject of this today?
Sure looks to me like the same black man on the surveillance tape literally armed with stolen cigars who is physically assaulting the store owner just minutes prior to his death (he and his eyewitness friend have now been named robbery suspects and still innocent until proven guilty). You can find the image of him dead on the ground if you would like to compare (or if you are just morbid)
Better yet can we just take this as one lesson where maybe we shouldn't all jump to conclusions and think twice before inflating the situation. Some comments on here were just plain scary, especially those by Nuart saying American is on a one way trip to hell. WTF

So allegedly he stole a pack of cigars from a store, does that give a cop a right to shoot an unarmed man with his hands up?

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Deleted on Aug 15, 2014 18:49:30 GMT 1, Thats not Michael Brown in the surveillance. That guys wearing sandals, Brown was wearing sneakers.
Look at me, im doing police work!
edit: hmm, It may be. On first look I thought they were sneakers. Could be wrong. The cop would know though I suppose. Regardless, I dont think killing an 18 year old suburban kid for shoplifting is right. Its happened a TON lately. Up here in Canada as well, and the cop that killed the kid here is facing jail time.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by kultur on Aug 15, 2014 18:51:51 GMT 1, You are still inflating this situation for no reason. Quit Trolling and let's have a discussion when all the facts are out there. This case is just becoming clear and the witness is also a robbery subject for this - which he failed to mention in any of his interviews! Of course they were just walking down the street but minutes before Big Mike was blatantly stealing from a store and assaulting the clerk.
Better yet let's wait and see what injuries the police officer has sustained - that has not been released but it has been officially stated that the officer had sustained injuries.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by randomname on Aug 15, 2014 18:57:52 GMT 1, exactly. happens way too often. Agreed. But getting back to yesterday's discussion, I personally think there's a stronger correlation between police brutality and income level than to race.
In my experience, people with less education and less income tend to be far more confrontational. They have less to lose and are often brought up in confrontational environments. Unfortunately, minorities are disproportionately represented in this group.
That doesn't excuse police using excessive force, but I think it sometimes contributes to it.
I make the same point when people claim that blacks commit more crime. The likelihood of someone to commit a crime has nothing to do with their race. It has more to do with desperation and survival.

In America, you are innocent until proven guilty. These kids were not convicted of a crime. And there was no reason to suspect they had weapons. Michael Brown should not have been killed.
