It has as much to do with urban art as the thread that has been up for weeks regarding Isreal v Hamas, or the thread RIP Rik Mayal, or the thread about a rare record store closing. With half of street art revolving around police abuse (See Banksy, Mau Mau, Ben Naz, La Staa, etc.), it is no less relevant than half the threads on this board.

But I also think part of the perceived increase in police brutality has to do with the prevalence of camera phones, combined with social media. There has been police brutality for as long as there have been police. But it's much easier to prove now. And to spread the word.

That does seem to be the case. But most cases also seem to involve the poor and many involve the mentally disabled. So I don't think it's as simple as racism, though that probably plays a part in it.

edit: hmm, It may be. On first look I thought they were sneakers. Could be wrong. The cop would know though I suppose. Regardless, I dont think killing an 18 year old suburban kid for shoplifting is right. Its happened a TON lately. Up here in Canada as well, and the cop that killed the kid here is facing jail time.

In my experience, people with less education and less income tend to be far more confrontational. They have less to lose and are often brought up in confrontational environments. Unfortunately, minorities are disproportionately represented in this group.
That doesn't excuse police using excessive force, but I think it sometimes contributes to it.
I make the same point when people claim that blacks commit more crime. The likelihood of someone to commit a crime has nothing to do with their race. It has more to do with desperation and survival.

In America, you are innocent until proven guilty. These kids were not convicted of a crime. And there was no reason to suspect they had weapons. Michael Brown should not have been killed.
