Kaws Presenting The Past Print , by Icesay on Sept 22, 2014 21:16:06 GMT 1, I'm sure you can think of plenty of others! But this thread is about Kaws and i got bored reading about the cost....my point was simply that great art doesn't cost a fortune until you say who is it by. If i like a tune i dance to it! I'm reading an interesting book at the moment, something like The Supermodel and the soap box. Talks a bit about why people buy art, what motivates the buyer and what purpose it serves. I'm loving the book so far. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in the economics of the art market. I know I'm way off topic at the moment but it is somewhat related because it goes to why people would like the KAWS print enough to pay that much money vs other less expensive art.ย
Hey...can i borrow that book when you are done? Sounds great.

Kaws Presenting The Past Print , by South Bound on Sept 22, 2014 21:16:58 GMT 1, It's not about the cost, it's about the value and any individual's perception of that?
That's kind of a loaded statement.
There are a few prints I desperately want right now which I just cannot buy (unless no one realizes they are available, and they are still posted in Nov.)
While I truly would value them as a prized pieces and would probably pass down to my kids. I just cannot justify the idea how the cost would effect my ability to pay tuitions, home repairs, clothes on my kids back, etc.
So while you can say it comes to value, in reality it comes down to the immediate cost...
NOTE: I'm really not trying to start an arguement, I'm just really bored.

Kaws Presenting The Past Print , by Deleted on Sept 22, 2014 21:24:33 GMT 1, There's a few people who post to start an argument, I'm (usually) not one of them. It wasn't supposed to be a loaded statement, more of an observation that most people have a budget of sorts and appropriate different value to different items. Paul Weller banged on about that in a town called malice...
It's a balancing act and for me, for the money, I'd sooner buy a Parla print than this. I'm obviously comfortable that other people take a different stance and if it was US$1000 cheaper then I would've gunned for it more but then......

There are a few prints I desperately want right now which I just cannot buy (unless no one realizes they are available, and they are still posted in Nov.) I just cannot justify the idea how the cost would effect my ability to pay tuitions, home repairs, clothes on my kids back, etc. So while you can say it comes to value, in reality it comes down to the immediate cost... NOTE: I'm really not trying to start an arguement, I'm just really bored. Art is something you buy frivolously.
You obviously dont spend tuition on it, blow your savings on it, etc. Many times its a gamble. There are some people with a lot of expendable cash on these forums, and kudos to them for their decisions that allow them to purchase these big ticket items, but the goal isnt to be like them at the expense of anything in real life. Grab what you can, when you can and keep looking forward, which is what youre doing, im agreeing.
Art is an investment, when you can make it one, but its a love and a passion first.

I am constantly amazed buy some of the purchases on this forum. Mainly the members who not only have one phenomenal piece, but multiples and seem to purchase them in a short period.
That being said, I do love the "Check out my Pad" thread... I have found that it has expanded my taste when I see pieces in context and not just in a gallery. Realized what works best in my own pad.

I'm not sure what 'message' kaws is saying with the pricing if feels very high end branding rather than an affordable edition for the masses.

There's hype and then there's the fact that he has released SO few prints that somehow I think the price is justified. 300 is nothing given the total number of kaws prints ever produced.
With supply so low and very little available on secondary they can basically control pricing and even if it cost significantly more I think it would still be good value. Paper smile is available slightly cheaper possibly but I find the image too angry for my walls and much prefer this one. My favourites are the more abstract prints from the portfolio set but no luck finding one for sale.
If banksy released an edition of eg 1000 at a price of ยฃ2000 Everybody would think it's a bargain.

It should be added the value of prints could fall as well as plummet.

I'm not sure what 'message' kaws is saying with the pricing if feels very high end branding rather than an affordable edition for the masses. The Spongebobs seem to be averaging over $4,000 and approaching $5,000.
But I do feel KAWS, with 15 years under his belt, has made many editions to date that were affordable for the masses...and that after a year that included a major museum show in Philadelphia in addition to a couple of high profile New York City shows the price is warranted.
His career plan at this point would seem to be getting a cement-hold on the level he's reached while developing his career further. A release like this is for those new adaptors looking to invest.
The Pink Accomplice, $500 3 1/2 years ago, is now going for $1,200 - $1,400 and selling.

Kaws Presenting The Past Print , by Deleted on Sept 23, 2014 17:17:55 GMT 1, Is the price justified for the print as an investment or because someone who re hashes Sponge Bob Square pants and cartoon charcters is an artistic genius? Back to the question of what is art then I was just wondering what motivates people to spend over 3K on a print?
Investment or the aesthetic.
