My opinion is a lot of Artists now have PR/Managers like bands/pop groups so they will get more exposure, better shows and sales, prices shoot up  . Artists with certain galleries (not sure which ones in US) in UK get more hype on this forum ie. Lazrides is the main one on here I would say.
Thing is you can follow the hype, get excited then spend $10k on an original, 6 months later you have a sales thread selling it for $7000. Seen it so many times on sales threads here.....
So listen to Jeezuz and only buy what you like, think long term.. happy daze..
There is always one artist every year that is hyped more than most, who would it be in 2014?

So high price instant artist and there are a few tend not to be based around talent. So look for artists with a bit of a track record and a bit of history that is progressing rather than an instant hit
Eg if the first place you here about an artist is the media then it's a good clue. If the first place you here about an artist is from a gallery then take a look at who they are and what they have done instant high price tends to imply hype especially if the work is not exceptional.

I would personally have Whatson as zero talent, and 100% hype by the board. Years ago he got called out by Logan Hicks for copying his work. And he continued to be very derivative until he hit upon the squiggles (which were derivative in themselves). But this board is it's own worst enemy and you all buy his prints, and originals and the lad is doing well, so fair play to him. Like Mr Brainwash he is an opportunist and who can say that doesn't take talent and hardwork?
On the other hand, there are many talented artists who will probably never sell for half the amount of MBW.
For me, there are many artists out there who are completely hyped by this board. I would personally have Whatson as zero talent, and 100% hype by the board. If you don't care for an artist and they sell out instantly people say hype.
If you love an artist and they sell out then they are the real deal.
Also this forum is a tony snapshot of what Joe public really think, whereas many seem to treat it as gospel.

I was having drinks with a friend the other day and we were talking about art. We were discussing Urban contemporary art. A form which he does not like. I said that to me Urban Contemporary art is art for the MTV generation. It is easily accessible, easily digestible, and is perfect for a sound-byte driven world where information is distilled to it's most basic form before being presented to the public. The art is visually appealing with a simple message, and thus easily consumed by the public.
There is nothing wrong with that. However, to assume that more than a tiny handful of artists will emerge from this style and remain relevant over time, is folly. As has been the case with any art form, outside of circles who are true followers of said form. The difference is, that with this form the following is much larger given the prevalence of the internet in marketing and disseminating the work.
All that said, I have no idea who has real talent, because the fact is only time will tell who will be remembered as a true master. Banksy & Shep, no doubt, Blek, Invader and Dran, perhaps or even prbably. Dolk, Walker, Dface, Whatson, Zach, Dot Dot Dot, MBW, I doubt.... I am not passing judgement as I happen to like their work for the most part, I just doubt they will go down in any history books as anything other than a foot note.

You cannot put zacharevic in the same bracket as dotdotdot and mbw. Different kettle of fish, just people who have no idea about his work wanted a quick 'in' with the red enjoy graffiti print. These people failed and glad they did as hopefully its put those kind of people off buying in the future. He is a big talent, just needs more time to mature.

No doubt Fะฏ, not trying to compare at all. I personally like what Zach does a lot and think he has real talent and skills, just worried that he will get lost in the fray because of the bubble created around him.

Some interesting points. I think urban art is a branch of contemporary that is here to stay. It offers a public canvas as well as private sales. I agreed it is the perfect sound byte for this generation. I also think it becomes a platform that shifts the way art is created and seen. It already has. I for one am always happy to see it on the streets of NY instead of the constant barrage of advertisement.
When the urban art history is written, Basquiat and Haring will be the pioneers along with Fairey and Banksy. I feel like Invader and Blek will hold a paragraph on the books unless they evolve. Faile, Os Gemeos, Swoon, JR, Blu, Phlegm and to a lesser extent Bast, Dran, How & Nosm, Parla, Kaws will stand the test of time from this generation. I hope that Borondo, Miss Bugs, Paul Insect, Dal and Faith47 get recognized for their work. That remains to be seen.

When you have to ask a question like that, I'm just wondering what kind of answers are expected by you. Is this a matter of 'oh this artist is deemed talented by other people so I gotta start appreciating their works'? I doubt art appreciation work this way. Hype aside, there are many artists who are praised beyond the sky by members on here but whose works I can never quite (maybe ever) fanthom, and whose works I would never wish to acquire in my life. Names like Basquait, Invader and Os gemeos etc come to mind - not that I can afford some of those names anyway.
And of course, there is always hype created all around us - in everything we consume. If you can see by your own standards that something is not hype, then it is not and vice versa. How do we answer something so complex like that??

All HYPE or REAL talent?, by Deleted on Oct 31, 2014 17:51:06 GMT 1, As someone has already said , this forum is a master of hyping artists up. In certain ways it uses the 'build them up then knock them down' model , much like the press can, and creates little 'hype bubbles' from time to time.
I generally just look at buying what I like the look of now.

That's not everyone's cup of tea, clearly, when you see the likes of young artists like Dan Rees, Lucien Smith and Oscar Murillo skyrocketing up the contemporary art market ladder. I just cannot wrap my head around their work. Again, to each their own... buy what you love and have an inner confidence about it.
Use this forum not to chase hype, but for exposure to new artists. This forum is a wonderful resource for that.

All HYPE or REAL talent?, by Lroy on Oct 31, 2014 20:26:58 GMT 1, Many street-artists copy and copy topics already covered by Banksy or Blek rat (as: the war, the poor child, the atmosphere of gangster - Scarface for example, weapons, the homeless, vintage and nostalgic also (old pub for example, colors - Faile , Obey , etc. ยฐ but lacks the estrangement, humor or/and storms , and creation, etc... )
Most of the stencilers are Hype. Most of the graffiters or painters are has-been, now, even if there are good ones !
Artists names ( " true " , as requested in the thread)? Easy. ROA, Aryz, Faith 47 and Daleast, Pavel (rip), Pejac, are artists working alone and in silence. For me, these are real artists - so to speak.
However, the "makers of prints" if we can say, or sellers of goodies, like Kaws, Faile (sorry guys) Mister Brainwash - which has nothing creates the contrary! What image it gives of street-art! Laughing out loud! Of the buffoonery! And even if Banksy loves him or gives him reason, it is not my problem.
C215 , Monsieur Andrรฉ ( berk ) and his cats, JR - a real talent however - and its photos and its selfies that spoil everything, etc... do not interest me.
Moreover, it is simple, take a student of fine arts, he can do you everything solo, and can even copy the Mona Lisa en stencil with a clow nose ! The problem is not to reproduce and/or make feeling with pleasant images in the eyes and on the walls, but to create. Even in the worth !
This is why I like Invader at the moment - which takes the rise -, he tries the tiles, he tries the Rubik, it attempts to waffles, he wanted to even try creations with some chewing gum: a good example of artist hype and talented. As banksy, of course - who has not waived and denounces and always innovates as much.
Anyway, all artists are good to see and recognize , even the worth. It is an exit for those that have not the money to take a plane and travel... For those who wants to open their spirit in another world, in the mind of the man and the creation.

. Artists with certain galleries (not sure which ones in US) in UK get more hype on this forum ie. Lazrides is the main one on here I would say.
