Why do people like Stik?, by docean on Dec 28, 2015 22:28:13 GMT 1, Just looking for someone to shed some light as to why they love Stik art.
His work fetches insane prices and I can't comprehend what the allure is...I wouldn't pay $5 for it.

thats the crux of it. Unless you have seen a stik up close its the little details he does to the lines which captures this.
on the other hand, its a stik man innit and everyone loves a stick man.

I like how he gets so much detail and emotion into 6 lines. thats the crux of it. Why do people like Stik?, by Fake on Dec 28, 2015 23:33:33 GMT 1, I have met him a couple of time's before he got big in the scene and I have to say he is one of the most interesting people out there.
At first my reaction was, who is this bum? He was wearing a very dirty fluorescent jacket two sizes to big.
He showed up late at an group show with live painting and he was the very last artist to start with his work. He started painting the 1 color background and was done in about 5 minutes with that... and behold he started using his cans as flamethrowers and giving a great show making his art! it was the highlight of the evening!
Talking to him you immediately notice he is different from every person you ever met.
I think he is one of the true artists out there as a person! Different, interesting, 100% him self, does not care what people say and does what he loves and believes in.

It's not even minimalist, or whatever you call it. There are many other works out there (read: julian opie) which bring emotions and simplicity in a human study together far better. A fine chap he may be, but I can't help to think his work is just hyped up to the max by speculators.
P.S: okay, opie's works have more than 6 strokes

The only thing more simple to create artistically besides a stencil is a stick figure some would say.

At least stencil art can be elevated to something far greater with real skills (like penny etc). Not that stik has to jump out of his few strokes, but what else can he do to further his craft as an artist?

Yeah did see that, he got some pretty outrageous drips on his piece using low pressure spray paint that didn't look like he planned them there. On the other hand I saw his piece on the block of flats from the train and was pretty impressed by the size of it. Also seems like a really nice person but that doesn't really account for a great artist, take Mr brainwash for comparison.
Not my cup of tea though.

I know he's been around for many years I'm comparing the 5mins to create a piece compared to the years of studying art and being trained as an artist and mentored etc. I don't think stik has had crazy PR or a manager like some artists who were hyped up and then came down with a bang. So that's a good thing.
