Why do people like Stik?, by Fะฏ on Dec 29, 2015 12:16:45 GMT 1, Why is Vanilla Ice Cream consistently peoples favorite in most surveys. Much like with Ice Cream, a lot of people like simplicity in their art. The only thing more simple to create artistically besides a stencil is a stick figure some would say. 1. Vanilla (29%) Vanilla as a flavor was first recorded as used in food by the Aztecs during the 1500โs. It was introduced to the Spanish conquistadors when they traveled across Mesonamerica. The Spanish were transfixed by the many ways vanilla was used in traditional Indian food and drinks, which is why the Spanish brought the vanilla bean back to Spain and throughout Europe by the 1600โs. Vanilla ice cream was thought to have been invented in Asia in the fourteenth century. Ice cream making spread from East to Europe when Moors and Arabs traveled to Spain and refrigeration became prominent in Europe. By the early 18th century, Italians and French were making vanilla ice cream, or frozen vanilla desserts by making smooth iced concoctions blended with sugar, eggs, and egg yolks in the recipe. The first ice cream recipes recorded by the French in the early eighteenth century did not include egg yolks. At least stencil art can be elevated to something far greater with real skills (like penny etc). Not that stik has to jump out of his few strokes, but what else can he do to further his craft as an artist? The fact that news headlines keep linking any street artists with banksy smells of the sensationalizing of the importance of that said artist. Sometimes the skill in in the simplicity. The more complex does not mean more accomplished or worthwhile. The reason why every bit of street work is related back to banksy is that when the media try to front a story, they use his name to sum up the scene. Much like you would quickly mention coca cola Rather than saying 'a dark caramelised sugary drink' when running a story about a similar soda. No ones comparing him or sensationalising. Two different artists completely in every way.
as far as im aware banksy is quietly earning the millions whilst stik could but chooses not to.

ย ย ย ย The only people that make money are behind the hype and the dealers.
I'm referring to various artists.
I doubt that Stik has any control over people pushing his prices up.
ย ย ย ย If one can buy a small original from him direct one would do better.
ย Stik has established his name by repeating the same emoticon over and over again, similar to Fairey and Invader.

Why do people like Stik?, by 11 on Dec 29, 2015 13:33:38 GMT 1, Stik hasn't engineered his own success one little bit and has gone about doing his thing with no regard for his 'career. He's now aware of his success and is careful about the message he gives out and the projects he'll back but remains unnaffected by money and status and continues to champion society and community issues.
He doesn't have a management or anything else and sometimes that could be to his detriment but he's done it himself and from what I can see intends to carry on that way
I've seen the new forum and had mixed feelings at first - the key factor is its emergence has been done with Stik's knowledge....I'm not sure he has endorsed it but I do know he had the opportunity to stop it and for now seems happy for it to develop. Another major plus is that it isn't a hate response to UAA and they aren't trying to poach our members and discredit us so for me, I'm happy for it to develop. I might even register

I have no doubt it wasn't stik who wanted that fame and big money. He probably don't even care about money given his past. It's the market that is manipulating his works. Speculative market that works the same way as a stock market with certain speculative stocks. And I stop short at saying shell companies.
As Jezuzjonesnr says, it's upsetting for an artist who spent time working at honing his craft and then someone like stik comes along - it's hard not to find the world unfair in that sense. But I guess this happens everywhere, like how some true musicians never find fame while justin bieber gets all the limelight (and for all stik fans, I'm not trying to compare stik with JB).

Why do people like Stik?, by natstan on Dec 29, 2015 13:47:00 GMT 1, I also note that some people, the guy in the article included, (mis)intepret that having a message or social commentary in the work means it's good work.
'Lamberty said: 'London Riots is a significant document of contemporary London life, every bit as relevant as the way Hogarth captured it in the 18th century with the Rakeโs Progress.
'Thereโs every reason to estimate that this Stik piece will go up in value like a Banksy.'
Really, what do you expect him to say? He's the new owner.

Why do people like Stik?, by docean on Dec 29, 2015 17:42:09 GMT 1, I get the simplicity aspect, as well as his significance in the scene...but if you break it all down...he's really just making things anyone could do at age 5.
For me to appreciate art, not only does it need to have underlying meaning...but I need to feel as if the artist put some time and effort into it...
I often think people like __ artist because everyone else likes __ artist. (insert: Banksy, Stik, Warhol, etc.)

Why do people like Stik?, by Dibbs 45 on Dec 29, 2015 18:26:05 GMT 1, I think I've mentioned this before but Stik represents the striped down nature of the disenfranchised. He has championed causes from the big issue, the Housing crisis, engaged with communities about their concerns and recently raised ยฃ50,000 for the NHS. Stik might be about a package that takes in all these elements, but he remains unaffected by the fame he in gained by fighting injustice. Rothko and Matisse would appear to have little skill on first viewing (And before you break my balls about comparison) I am not comparing skills of masters and Stik but the essence of all art and that is that it is subjective and that to define any form of art is to limit it. There should never be one concept of genre of art whether urban or contemporary. Stik will always have his detractors as his work will not fall into their idea of time and effort, execution of skill and the resentment of the fame he has received when conveying 2 dots and 6 lines to convey a meaning in his work.
I've met Stik a number of times and he is a genuine and likeable fella who sincerely believes in fighting for what he believes.

People say it about guys like Cy Twombly (scribbles on a canvas) or Jeff Koons (balloon dog sculpture); art that sells for tens of millions but they don't realize it probably did take considerable effort. If I liked a particular Stik image I could go buy a canvas and make a replica in under 2 hours with acrylic...or even less time with spray. In fact, I'm almost certain I saw a post on here recently where someone did just that because they didn't want to pay the absurd prices but they liked the image.

Why do people like Stik?, by tartarus on Dec 29, 2015 18:56:46 GMT 1, THE most pointless question ever asked about art.
Why do people like.......
More important question, how the hell does it seem worth while to even ask that??
Personal taste. Same reason I don't like pink and don't eat McDonald's.
Get the fuck over it!

I had wanted to point that out but guess the fans will argue that it is the 'idea' rather than the 'execution' that is more important. I tend to disagree though - my notion of the artist should be to challenge the viewer in both aspects, which means he should be able to think of and produce something which I could not myself or did not ever think of before. Especially not when you can churn out an almost identical one without any art training in under 2 hours (or maybe 1). It's almost laughable when you even have to spend thousands and tens of thousands to buy something like that and hang it on your wall.

Why do people like Stik?, by natstan on Dec 29, 2015 19:18:24 GMT 1, You never know but just as with Gerhard Richter, stik could probably at times be wondering why the big fuss over his figures. He just wanna have fun doodling them but can't exactly understand why all these (foolish) people are paying top dollar for them!
The litmus test would be to ask oneself - should nobody else be talking about and clamouring for his works, or they will fetch next to nothing/ hard to find a buyer when you want to sell them, will you still buy it? It's hard to justify spending a decent sum of money on these if those market conditions are not in place, let us not kid ourselves.

More important question, how the hell does it seem worth while to even ask that?? Personal taste. Same reason I don't like pink and don't eat McDonald's. Get the f**k over it! Some people like really bad B grade movies too, but as a friend, it'll do everybody good to let him know there are plenty of good A grade flicks out there so he'll not continue to waste his bloody time watching those bad ones.
Dictators decide the tastes of others, not friends.

More important question, how the hell does it seem worth while to even ask that?? Personal taste. Same reason I don't like pink and don't eat McDonald's. Get the f**k over it! It was a question aimed at trying to find an explanation for the absurd pricing...chill out.
Sounds more like a pointless attack to me.
And it's all been said before about the likes of harring Lowry picasso etc so it's a bit pointless to say the least, since the actual answer you can't escape from is quite obviously personal taste.
As for insane prices, that's just your opinion really isn't it.

You should not even have entered a room with dictators around then.

The person who started this conversation in this room was asking for opinions and different perspectives. Friends of his entered the room and gave him their opinions. You came into this room and tells him why is it worth the time to even ask such a question and that those friends who offered differing opinions and alternatives are dictators. So to quote you, why is it even worthwhile for you to even join in the conversation?

Why do people like Stik?, by Dungle on Dec 29, 2015 20:25:08 GMT 1, Gotta say I find the pricing mental, but I guess it's easily explained as edition sizes are very small and clearly a lot of people love his work. Because the editions are so small it only needs a small pool of buyers to miss out and the prices are sent sky rocketing upwards.
I would love a canvas of my family done by stick and the missus is bagging me to get it done, but there is only so much one can buy!!
