The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by Daniel Silk on May 28, 2016 14:02:03 GMT 1, Started as in "inner" now in the fence. The main reasons for "in" seems to be 1)protecting the financial services industry and 2)keep house prices high. Inequality of income and high house prices are a failure of our society, so why fight to keep them ? I am happy to take the hit on my house value if it means my kids, and others will one day be able to buy their own. Anyway more kids with homes = more walls that need art so my collection will more than cover any loss I make on home ...surely? I think the City of London, Banking, Insurance, Financial services will be much better off if we leave the EU.

America and Germany of course would like to attract more HQ's to transfer out of London to them. While we are in the EU I'm sure they see it as much easier to halt the competitiveness of London for the benefit of Germany and America.

You think that Dan But just about every financial institution thinks the opposite.

I guess different people have different motivations. My motivation for voting in is what I perceive to be the threat of very large numbers of job loses if we leave.

"Mr Jansa, who is currently president of the European Council, believes there is a simple solution to the EU's popularity deficit. There should be a football team representing all 27 countries of the bloc. Existing national teams would continue as before. The EU all-stars would turn out occasionally against other continents or regions of the globe."
"For identity, it is very important that people are able to connect with something that is common," Mr Jansa told the European Parliament yesterday. "For example, a football team of the European Union. We could have a football match between the EU and a Latin American team or the African Union."

"Members of the European Parliament are backing calls to fly the EU's blue flag with yellow stars at sporting events, such as Wimbledon, held in its territory and, most controversially, to have the EU emblem on national team shirts. The proposals, to be released next week, stipulate that all national sports teams, including football, rugby, cricket and the British Olympic team, would be forced to have the EU emblem appear on their jerseys."

What a great idea, the EU's many programs to foster a shared arts and cultural identity across what are fundamentally man made and fluid borders should be encouraged. More of this please. We've seen what sharing a simple love for the aesthetics and ideology behind Street Art has done for this board, which becomes more multicultural by the year, and all the better for it. We have far more in common than differences, let's encourage and celebrate the fact :-)

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by iamzero on May 28, 2016 20:40:45 GMT 1, Would we be just better off voting to leave and then getting a better deal to stay in like that Theo the Greek dude from the papershop said? I'd prefer to leave but probably better off in the tent pissing in than the other way round. I'm sick of all the scaremongering from the remain side, makes me more determined to think f**k you and leave to prove them wrong. And I'd like to slap Trump with an overfished cod.

Both sides were heavily criticised by a parliamentary committee yesterday. Rightly so. As I said in a previous post, both sides have behaved badly, imo.

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by agu on May 29, 2016 8:15:25 GMT 1, Jean-Claude Juncker: โDeserters not welcomed backโ
Really. REALLY! It is this kind of rhetoric that makes me want to say, 'f@%k you'.
Rant over.. I agree with coach, on the job scenario. We have zero manufacturing base and would need to rebuild whole tranches of the economy, it will not be pain free. More or less painful than staying? Who knows.

I do not trust those that desire absolute power, because that is what they want - power with no obstructions.โ
Really good point that I had not heard before.
I have to say the quality of debate on this forum beats the press by a country mile... Or an Eu kilometre.

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by Matt on May 29, 2016 9:32:00 GMT 1, The idea that you could exit and then renegotiate better terms back in is hilarious.
Not because of some playground ego bullshit (which, btw seems to be the motivation of many voters), but because the EU is about common policy whether you like it or not. The UK has always managed to only take the portions of policy that benefit the UK ("no Euro, no free circulation of people, but yes please to free circulation of goods otherwise our economy will suffer")
With all the immigration, monetary, and political issues in the EU right now, no one will be clamouring to have back a dissenting bunch of voters who don't adhere to the main policies anyways, and would want back in with an even better deal.
In order to squeeze out some votes and save himself from Ed, Cameron put himself between a rock and a hard place. He has created an expectation for change at home, that the EU right now can't be arsed to look into, and he is basically being told to sort out the mess he created.
As much as some might like it to be true, the idea that a little island off the coast of mainland Europe will be much stronger now on it's own , makes no sense.
As the world struggles to pull out of one recession, and tries desperately not be pulled into what seems an inevitable other, no one is going to give a rat's ass about the position and future needs the of UK, the renegotiations and all the other unknown elements that need to be sorted out over the next years are going to be no one's priority.
The UK will be king of it's tiny castle, and also totally isolated. As has been pointed out this isolation will benefit only a small portion of people for whom it increases their own power and stronghold : a few UK moguls and politicians.
Other funny ideas that you would really want to believe, but make no sense, include: - Brexit will cause house prices to drop even more so we can now afford homes. No, because guess what else will drop : employment and ability to get finance. Still no home for Joe Schmo I'm afraid - Brexit will strengthen our financial institutions : They are the biggest sponsors of the "stay" campaigns, so they must so stupid that they don't know what's good for them

Voting with your gut instead of your brain, to signal to politicians that you are unhappy, will do you no good. It will only do good for another bunch of politicians...and so the system goes on.
People who complain most vocally about politicians are either other politicians or all the special interest groups (Unions, Lobbys etc...)

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by iamzero on May 29, 2016 9:38:59 GMT 1, The fact that we may be better off as part of the EU is irrelevant to the majority of the British voter. The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by iamzero on May 29, 2016 9:50:31 GMT 1, Your facts and figures may well be on the button Matt but if the majority of voters don't see it that way we ain't staying in. Both sides have taken to scaremongering tactics instead of reasoning with the voter. Big mistake to a country full of fuck you voters.

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by Deleted on May 29, 2016 14:25:18 GMT 1, The fact that we may be better off as part of the EU is irrelevant to the majority of the British voter. I get the feeling the people of this once great nation hate being bullied into Europe and may just vote the other way to prove a point. Cutting their nose off to spite their face. We are a stubborn population, probably as a result of being an island nation.
But i am keen to hear from all those that want out, what it is that the EU has imposed on the UK that makes you want to vote out?

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by iamzero on May 29, 2016 14:42:06 GMT 1, I guess the problem is we only hear about the negative things about what the EU imposes in the way of immigration and fishing rights etc. I guess there's more to it than that as Cameron changed his tune pretty quick after peeking behind the scenes.

Bloody working time regulations for a start! Forcing employers to give employees minimum amounts of paid holiday, daily and weekly rest breaks etc! Liberty!
And don't get me started on the Equal Treatment Directive!!
