Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by mojo on Jun 6, 2016 13:26:43 GMT 1, This could of been a very cool gesture for the school although in my opinion this is a very irresponsible image to put up at a primary school. Children of that age are very impressionable and if all the adults around them are telling them it's wonderful just because Banksy may have painted it it could easily send out a very confusing and potentially dangerous message. I posted here a while back that my 5 year old nephew has been studying Banksy's work at his primary school for their annual art project 'Painting for Peace' and used CND Soldiers as inspiration. I witnessed first hand what a huge influence that had on him and joked at the time that it was 'so cute teaching activist vandalism in little school' however writing on walls to promote peace and unity is one thing where as this image is quite literally playing with fire. (and it looks like a Dran). Meh. Imo Parents responsibility to teach their own kids about fire safety. Do your job and let Banksy do the inspiration for the arts bit. I am generally a staunch supporter of all things Banksy from way back yet feel completely justified to make my comments and stand by them. I agree that the flaming tyre looks very well executed just not suitable for a school. I'll just get back to doing my job eh?....te he

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by Sliding on the Walls on Jun 6, 2016 13:41:14 GMT 1, Some of you need to lighten up! This is a wonderful gesture, Banksy didn't have to do it - he chose to. Giving back to the city that he came from, where's the harm?
It's a great image, a bit of harmless fun and whoever thinks that it's all of a sudden going to generate a generation of kids who are into playing with burning tyres in their spare time then you're just as bad as those people who say computer games are to blame for this that and the other!
If anything this is actually contextualizing an art movement for school children in a tangible and engaging way, broadening their knowledge and interest in art!

Yes I do have two young kids and they get to see a lot more controversial work hanging in their home. I appreciate that is our choice as parents and our responsibility to take time with our children to explain.
I also understand the negative commentary but seriously have you watched the cartoons your kids watch or the video games they play. If you think wrapping children up in kid gloves and shielding them from stuff like this is the way forward then I beg to differ.
The responsible attitude you want these children to have will be created by delivering the understanding of what is right and what is wrong through education. Education delivered by parents, an engaging school system and a responsible adult society.
I would also say that the underlying message that should be delivered by the parents and teachers is the charitable nature of this gesture.

Probably as simple as children should not play with fire. The child depicted has a concerned look upon their face IMO.

" A spokesman for Banksy confirmed to BBC News that the artwork is genuine. " I would prefer a fireman spokesman , it would be funny ! These flames are so great It looks like that Banksy has been inspired by old vintage and satiric mind of comics of the last century as The katzenjammer kids or the 50' with Quick et Flupke mocking the cop per example .. Yes, kids knows ... :-)

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by stillborncrisps on Jun 6, 2016 14:19:16 GMT 1, I don't know about sending a confusing message to children, I find it confusing myself. B's pieces are usually so straight and to the point, but this I'm lost on.
Re playing with fire - def the parents' responsibility. Maybe he was hilighting over-protectiveness parents? I was allowed to play with matches when I was little and I learnt a few lessons quickly, didn't do anything massively destructive, and had a lot of fun. No harm done.

Maybe more details of the message will come out in the media over the next few days. Anything happened at the school or in that area with Fire? Or Children and Fire?

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by eye like on Jun 6, 2016 14:56:57 GMT 1, I could be wrong but I wonder whether the image is about the loss of childhood innocence in today's modern times.
The burning tyre is a metaphor for the loss of their innocence as well as a graphic and literal reminder of how some inner city kids get their fun by using discarded objects they find in their neighbourhood.
I think Banksy is saying to the kids, enjoy your innocence while it lasts...it's all too brief and getting shorter all the time. I'm pretty sure he's not advocating going and finding a tyre to burn!!
IMHO of course!

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by Sliding on the Walls on Jun 6, 2016 15:08:21 GMT 1, The message I got from it is thus:
It's a play on the classic game of 'stick a hoop' - a relic of a bygone era where children would run along the street with a hoop and try to keep it in momentum by rolling it with a stick. This was a source of entertainment for kids back in the day. Or more importantly the glory days where everything was great.
Nowadays (what with the world going to shit, and all) the hoop has been replaced by a burning car tyre from the latest joyride/riot/protest and the kid has nothing to play with but this.
The message: What impact is our current hostile world climate having on our children?
Either that or there's just f**k all to do in Whitchurch

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by Argiebaji on Jun 6, 2016 15:11:52 GMT 1, Security at schools are really really tight nowadays... Even during the holidays.
The caretaker or school premises manager should be sacked on the spot for missing this one!?
Or was it agreed all round beforehand?

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by Feral Things on Jun 6, 2016 15:23:26 GMT 1, Here's a few photos for anyone that's interested. The tyre is stenciled and the flames and smoke are freehand; the two work seamlessly together. I think it's probably the first street piece in a while that he's signed too.
The piece references one of Martha Cooper's 'Street Play' photos that she took in Alphabet City of the late 1970, thus returning the compliment that Martha paid when she included a Bร nksy piece in her 'Ghetto For Life' photo (EDIT: That's pure speculation on my part!). A stickman was also included on a piece on Bridewell Police Station back in 2000 (which at the time was the main police station in Bristol); unfortunately, I can only find this badly faded photo on my hard-drive but you can see the stickman on the right (the stencil on the left is by Arse, not Bร nksy; Bร nksy's stencil of two cops had been buffed by this point but the buffers missed the stickman):
And to allay anyone's concerns, no children have become arsonists since coming to school this morning

I read this as Banksy, in typical self-deprecating fashion, saying that holding him up as a role model to the children (in naming one of the school houses after him etc) is playing with fire.

The point your so brilliantly missing is there's a little more depth to this than simply a stick figure .
