Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by mojo on Jun 7, 2016 15:11:39 GMT 1, Hello @11 I won't quote cause it's a long one however I kind of get the gist of what you're saying and despite the fact I feel the image is inappropriate for the school I'm still interested in other peoples views. However, I can't explain why little children are drowning and being washed up on our shores and many of the other horrors that the world presents to us and even if I could I don't think a 5 year old would or should be expected to comprehend any of it. We are the adults and in my opinion 5 is far too young to be concerning yourself with the evil ways of the world. At 5 you're just about learning to read and write.....phonetics innit. Perhaps all we can do as adults is gently prepare them for a world that isn't always fair or morally correct and do our best to make it fair and morally correct on their behalf. Anyway must dash got to pick my 5 year old nephew up from school now for swimming lessons. Then beans on toast, reading practice and a bit of model making ...... we don't watch telly. * Any day now he's going to be able to read my Goldpeg 'Fuck the Fucking Fuckers' poster ....then what do I say? Maybe that's the only thing he really needs to know!
Gold & diamond encrusted phones! ...... drop me out that's well tacky

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by 11 on Jun 7, 2016 15:47:23 GMT 1, I fully understand where you are coming from too mojo. I wasn't suggesting that we should explain to a child why boat loads of refugees are dying - the point I was trying to make is they see those things plastered across the papers and television everyday so this, for me is a much simpler concept that could be discussed with a child. Not the horror but the fact there is a very different world out there.
Whilst tolerance to such atrocity becomes the norm as we become hardened to 'life' it doesn't mean our children shouldn't learn that it isn't normal.
IMO This isn't promoting the need to go and set light to tyres, it is challenging why some children have to grow up like that and promoting the need to change what we as adults see as 'life'

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by Coach on Jun 7, 2016 16:30:27 GMT 1, " It appears lots of people are of the view that it doesn't really matter what 5 year old children see during their childhood cause it's part of life so they should just get on with it." I don't think that that statement is a fair representation of what people are saying. Of course I care what images 5 year olds see. It's all a question of degree. You feel, I think, that this is an inappropriate image for children of that age to see. That's fair enough. I don't agree. But that doesn't mean that I don't care what images children see. What part of a kid playing with a furiously burning tyre in their school playground is appropriate? Yes @coach it doesn't happen often however on this one we are going to have to agree to differ. I'm sure you are a very discerning person and I have no doubt you care greatly about what images children of that age see. I think it opens up an interesting discussion on what the average 5 year old does see & hear during their average day. Also if it wasn't painted by Banksy I think that particular image would be very alarming to find drawn on a primary school wall and in other circumstances would surely be removed pronto. Please believe me, I'm not anti Banksy or you Coach in any way
No ill will on my party towards you either mojo. None whatsoever. It's a good discussion.

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by lee3 on Jun 7, 2016 16:39:59 GMT 1, I adore the painting, note and gesture. Very cool move and love the added humor of messing about with a school like that- that's hilarious to me. Unlike many of the comments, my boys were not innocent 5 years olds, maybe the older one was but the younger one was an ass at that age. Self centered, manipulative whiner as I recall. Thankfully they change like chameleons and he's a pretty good dude at the moment but a dash of reality or better still a a brief run in with a flaming tire might have toughened him up and done some good.
None of those kids are going to start playing with flaming tires, but they might start asking moms and dads some art related questions. The local paint supply stores should benefit handsomely too. He's always good for a laugh which is a uncommon in the art world.

Sorry ?
Rich and famous ? How does that work, whilst any artwork framed or not is sitting in a draw or on a wall it's worthless, till sold....... Then it's not yours so the money you obtain is what you own and not the artwork so you then don't own a piece of art worth X amount, thus you are longer involved with the piece therefore your not famous, the artwork was or is, not the previous owner

They are certainly famous now (at least more so than they were before the art appeared) and I'm sure they'll find a way to convert that into money in the short, medium or even long term.

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by Deleted on Jun 8, 2016 15:06:18 GMT 1, So do you like Banksy then? He has a PR team don't you know! Have you mentioned that?
My advice for any members is that if you have a particular dislike for an artist or association (eg Banksy & the BBC) to reference your dislike occasionally is what freedom of speech on this forum is about. But to continual bleat on about it is probably against the spirit of that statement and should be avoided.
I like the art and think it would have worked great on a wall of a run down inner city comprehensive or secondary school in a high crime area where cars are being set on fire regularly by youngsters.
Did Banksy say if the mural was satirical or a take on todays society or has no meaning?
I have no dislike for Banksy.
As for PR teams who are the same as advertising agency.
Big deal, nothing wrong with winding up a PR team now and then.
It might seem that way simply because when I have made a comment, I have been attacked and accused of hating Banksy. So it might be best not to believe everything that people post on this forum.

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by curiousgeorge on Jun 10, 2016 1:21:45 GMT 1, Hello @11 I won't quote cause it's a long one however I kind of get the gist of what you're saying and despite the fact I feel the image is inappropriate for the school I'm still interested in other peoples views. * Any day now he's going to be able to read my Goldpeg 'f**k the f**king f**kers' poster ....then what do I say? Maybe that's the only thing he really needs to know! Gold & diamond encrusted phones! ...... drop me out that's well tacky It's my personal view that we should be far more concerned about what advertisers expose our children/consumers to than what street art they should or shouldn't look at. Not sure if you were joking about we don't watch telly or not, if not that kind of explains the replies you've made on the subject. Hate to break it to you but 5 years old is no longer considered a child (in the eyes of greedy multi national bluechip companies that stalk our children/consumers)
I raised my child with a mantra of it is the parents job to expose the child to the dangers of the world in a controlled manner. I guess it paid dividends as I fondly recall taking him to Bristol Museum show when he was 5 and I've yet to recall seeing him more entranced and captivated by any other day out. Him pointing to the dildo hidden among the installation of stalagmites, stalactites and loudly asking "What is that!?" Is a moment that will live with me and perhaps some of the adults that vanished immediately forever
I think some kids deserve more credit than they get in terms of being smart. Banksy/graff was part of the year 5/6 here and I was amazed at what children could see in his imagery already.

Banksy/graff was part of the year 5/6 here and I was amazed at what children could see in his imagery already.

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by rbk on Jun 10, 2016 4:18:20 GMT 1, Well think the piece has been very successful. If it created 6 pages of discussion on content quality and meaning on here I assume it is being discussed and disected at the school by the kids and the teachers, Think it will have generated a lot of discussion there on its meaning playing with fire etc, what it means literally and safety etc, but also its literal expression,
so think it is job well done and I do think he would have considered this before putting it up. similarly in the letter and his permission forgiveness comment. it is there for explanation and an interpretation.
all designed to help educate the kids

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by smokinfish on Jun 10, 2016 7:04:06 GMT 1, My take: The little girl is hoop rolling. The object of this game is to keep the hope upright for as long as she can. With the house in the distance one could say that she is rolling the tire away from the house, Possibly keeping the house from burning down. She's using a technique to move the burning tire to safety that only a child might think of. The flower represents the distance it will take to save the house. This would also explain the concerned look of determination on the girls face. As many people on here have said "kids should not be playing with fire". So if the little girl doesn't think for herself and only goes by what adults tell her "don't play with fire" then the house burns. She has to act fast there's no time to consult with an adult about what she thinks is the right thing to do.
Thus, it's easier to get for forgiveness then permission. I'm pretty sure once this little girls parents find out what she did. They will forgive her for playing with fire.

B'anksy is very controversial at times which is good. Plus there would be no point making controversial art if it did not create debate etc.

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by Cornish Crayon on Jul 7, 2016 21:47:02 GMT 1, When in Bristol a few weeks back, had to ask and it was an obvious no..........
But she did say that you would be able to access it and see it at the summer fayre, so if anybody is wanting a look, tomorrow is your chance.
No worries
