Show us your HIFI System, by Lesson1 on Jan 1, 2014 15:38:35 GMT 1, I have sonos white and are hardly noticeable in the rooms. I have the 5 in the kitchen and 3 elsewhere. You can buy two of each and pair them for stereo sound. May swap the bedroom ones for 2x1 setup. I buy mine through a sonos specialist in teddington, called simply sonos, although they may have changed their name slightly find the cheapest deal, ie. richer sounds then call simply sonos to price match.

Show us your HIFI System, by Deleted on Jan 1, 2014 16:07:31 GMT 1, I went from Class A amps that heated my room in the winter to class D a few years ago. I have loved digital amps. They are smaller, no heat, and are cheaper to run. I'm currently using a modified dual mono Bel Canto. But they make a reference series as well.
Speakers in my opinion are the heart of the system. Go for sound and beauty, yes you can get ok sound from those mini speakers but not the same as you can with a high end set of bookshelfs with a small sub to take care of that low end. I went from the matching sub and satellite system that went with my Loewe setup, to a mismatch with the digital amp and a nice set of bookshelfs. I use it for tv, movies and music. So not a single purpose rig but the sound all around is 10x better than the pretty expensive (5k) sub sat that came with it.
Edit you can see how compact digital amps are. My entire system is neatly put away on a modern walnut shelf table that matches my walnut speakers and bases. I also wanted my system integrated with my life and room, not the other way around

Show us your HIFI System, by Warm Gun on Jan 1, 2014 16:33:16 GMT 1, I bought a Sonos play 5 a few days ago. Stunning sound, can't pick a fault with it. I done a lot of research on wifi speakers and I only ever read positive reviews on these. They are regarded as the best on the market in their price range and out perform competition from Bose and B&W. They are a bit pricey at ยฃ350 but the punch they have is fantastic. There is cheaper three speaker version (play 3) for ยฃ250 or a one speaker version (play 1) for ยฃ170. To work them you plug the wifi bridge (currently free with every purchase) into your hub or whatever you have, turn it on and tadar, you can stream your iTunes, spotify, napster and any music you have on your pc via a dedicated network, so unlike a lot of other wifi speakers you won't get any drop in performance. You can add a sonos to every room if you wanted to and control what you play from the free app that works on your phone or tablet or pc etc. You could even stream different songs into different rooms at the same time whilst controlling the volume, bass, middle etc. Lovely bit of kit. I sound like a salesman here but I really am impressed with the sound, adaptability and ease of set up. Hey fella... Did you go for black or white...? and the bridge is free right..?? Did you buy via amazon...?? I just showed the advert for the SONOS speaker range to my wife and she is lovin' the white play5 already...gulp 2014 could be expensive!! I went for the white Sir, it looked more sleek for some reason. Sonos were offering the bridges for free up until yesterday (sods law) but I'm sure you'll be able to find someone still giving them away, otherwise they're ยฃ40! There are loads of unopened ones on eBay (selling for about ยฃ5) due to the fact that one is plenty enough to serve the average sized house yet since November they were handing them out with every speaker sold. There are a glut of them around.
I bought mine from John Lewis but they sell them in all the usual outlets. They are the same price wherever you go. I waited for a whole year hoping for a price drop but they didn't budge.

Show us your HIFI System, by Strange Al on Jan 1, 2014 16:39:09 GMT 1, I was just about to start I hifi thread. I have decided to dig out my vinyls and took the plunge buying a Roksan Radius 5.2 Turntable over Christmas. I am looking to add a intergrated amplifier with phono stage and a simple set of speakers. To be honest I am happy to sacrifice sound to a certain extent to get the asthetics I am after. Also space is an issue for speakers. Anybody out there able to help. My first thoughts are an Arcam FMJ A19 integrated amplifier and a pair of Elipson Planet M speakers with stands. Max music power on the speakers is 60 watts (recommended 30w- 80w amplifier) and the Arcam delivers 2 x 50 watts. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Hifi happens to be one of my other obsessions and I'm happy to make a few suggestions.
The Roksan is a great turntable, and a solid foundation for an excellent set up. What tonearm and cart did you get?
What is the space/room like where you're planning to put the hifi? Seen some pics of your place on other threads, though not sure if you have a specific location in mind.
What music do you generally listen to?
What sort of sound do you prefer - neutral, warm, etc?
Do you need party volumes?

I went with the Nima tonearm and I have yet to decide on the cart.
Its going in a small room that is about 20ft x 20ft.
Music is fairly neutral and no need for party volumes.

Anyone know a work around (in layman's terms), if we can't get it sorted then it'll be for sale!! When it works, it's very impressive.

Show us your HIFI System, by johnnyh on Jan 1, 2014 17:57:18 GMT 1, Neil disagree with some of the above. Spend well on the cart as it is the link with your record and the start of the chain. Likewise invest in top cabling as it links the amp to speakers. Top speakers invest in them. Turntable amp should be able to take the best it can produce and relay that to the speakers. Likewise the speakers must be able relay all the qualities and sounds of the amp. They are the end of the chain does not matter how good a turntable or cartridge you have or the quality of your amp if those qualities cannot be reproduced by your speakers. With size of room you do not need big speakers but you do need good response and really good sound at low levels. Test it all out with them. Bring a couple of records of different types that you know well. Get them to play them. Hear the differences and buy the ones that sound right for you

Thanks for all the advice fellas... I've gone for the White Sonos Play5 inc free bridge ... delivered for ยฃ314 through 'digitalmusic user' ...

Links via bluetooth or hardwire to your pc, program on your pc runs your music colection ( itunes etc) and alows access to about 900 internet radio stations, app on your iphone, ipad, tablet or smartphone acts as the display and controller. All rather nifty. We love our soundbar, top bit of kit. Wanting a 1or3 for the kitchen.

I have dealt a couple of times with TomTom audio (Henry & James) it would be worth getting in touch or checking their website, they have a demo room in St Albans.
www.tomtomaudio.com/
The biggest compliment I can give is the system keeps out of the way and just honestly presents the music.

All rather nifty. We love our soundbar, top bit of kit. Wanting a 1or3 for the kitchen. Can you plug it in to a hifi or do you have to use PC?

Plus if you have a party and your mates have Sonos, you could borrow their kit to play in other rooms of your house (or you could buy your own).

We have the soundbar, but guess the 1,3and5 might be able to do it too.

I like the sound of the wifi speakers but not the PC bit that would not suit my needs.... Just thought if you could plug it in to an amp and play CDs that would be somthing I might like....

It streams beautifully. And anyone can control it in the house from the free sonos app from iPad,phone etc. When it was on a computer or iPad the music sometimes broke up. The sonos speakers are great for everyday room use but ideally works best on a real hi fi.I have a roksan set up and kef floor standing speakers, hi fi is addictive!
