Show us your HIFI System, by student42 on Jan 1, 2014 22:17:48 GMT 1, I have the Sonos, but it has limits on how large your library can be. I have surpassed it one day one, which is unfortunate. Also the sound quality on the D/A converters is O.K. but not the greatest. If you are playing from Spotify the sound quality sucks anyway. I have high quality streaming enabled (which is NOT by default) and the sound quality is still inferior to a 320 MP3 on my computer. I can also hear a large sound improvement just moving for MP3 to FLAC so that is what I have been listening to lately (and that was on my KRK rokits, not my good stereo). Sonos does support FLAC which is good.
My next move is going to use one of my old computers with a Creative Labs E-MU1212M sound card which I have laying around and set it up as a music server loaded with FLAC files and a JRiver media center installed. You can control and play the music from any other computer and there are apps that will allow you to control and play it from a tablet or phone.
Newcomers please do not waste your money on expensive cables. They may make a difference, but that difference is very subtle. Do not buy cheap cables either, get something middle of the road. Your money is best spent elsewhere. Source, preamp, amp, and speakers all matter and should be matched appropriately and to taste.
My 2-channel system consists of Sunfire (tube preamp + SS amp), Rotel (CD), Thorens (turntable), Sonos (streaming), MIT&Monster (cables), and KEF Reference (speakers). I used to upgrade components periodically but I stopped years ago when I got to this.

Be it hi-fi (recently sold my meridian, musical fidelity, Michelle gyrodec system for a naim unitiqute) art, comics, bmx's, records, whatever......not sure where I'm going with this but I'm not sure I'm 100% certain I should have sold my old hi-fi. Can't go wrong with Sonos from what I hear though.

Show us your HIFI System, by darrenrapley on Jan 1, 2014 22:57:03 GMT 1, Hiya - you are getting lots of advice about Sonos; mainly good. I swear by it.
The info below is correct - others might add or embellish it but it is a good start if you are considering going down the Sonos route.
1 - You will use either your computer, phone, tablet or the sonos remote to operate it. I think that Sonos have stopped making the remotes as everyone uses their mobile device though. The operating system is brilliant and you can either tell your system to play Spotify (or the other similar systems), Radio, whatever is on your device or you can point it to your NAS (Server such as the WD discussed earlier). Sonos play FLAC files (good quality (lossless)). Personally I have a server filled with lossless audio files and play either these or radio.
2 - There are three different 'versions' of sonos. a) You already have a good pair of speakers and want to use these. (I have a set of minipods and use this system amongst others). You will need to buy a Sonos Connect Amp. You speakers plug into this with banana plugs and off you go.
b) You have a good stereo already with speakers (I have a Quad 33/303 with Rogers LS3/5A downstairs and use this in my sitting room). You need to buy a Sonos Connect. This connects to your existing amp and off you go.
You may ask why you would need the Sonos system if you already have a good stereo.... The answer is being able to use FLACs, stream audio from your NAS, streaming from your mobile device or playing radio. Don't forget, unlike connecting your iPhone to your existing system and playing radio for example - once you have told Sonos via your mobile device to play a song/radio station or whatever, you can actually turn off your mobile device. Or you can start tell Sonos via your phone to play an album, turn off your phone and turn on your iPad and carry on where you left off. Sonos really is very simple and useful. Worth noting that the Sonos Connect has a built in DAC which I find to be pretty good. Don't worry too much about that unless you plan to play lossless files though.
c) You have nothing at all in the way of existing stereo to use. (In my kitchen for example). You buy a play 1, Play 3 or Play 5 and off you go. My suggestion is either 2xPlay 1s or 1xPlay 5. Go to your nearest Currys or Richer Sounds and have a go.
The Play speakers are fantastic. Not as good as my Rogers, but very very good. They look better though.
In short - Sonos and all the other makes mentioned are excellent. I find Sonos just better to use as I use a server anyway to watch films and might as well use it for audio too.
Oh, one more thing that someone else mentioned but I wanted you to know is that using the Sonos app on my phone/ipad can tell my three Sonos systems (Bedroom, Sitting room and Kitchen) to play the same song in perfect synch, or each room to play a different song/album/radio station. It is that good. Addictive though.

Show us your HIFI System, by Martin M on Jan 1, 2014 23:17:01 GMT 1, I got the Sonos for Christmas, and its brilliant. I run it through my existing stereo with the help of an Arcam Dac, I was going to go for the Musical Fidelity M1 Dac, but to be honest the sound via the arcam sounds pretty dam good to my ears. Running it through a Musical fidelity A5 integrated and a pair of Kef References, amazing sound for a wireless set up.

Revisiting your cd collection?! I'm still in between tapes and CDs. I think I am a little behind the times!! My kids but digital downloads. I can't grasp the concept of not having something tangible in my hands to look at whilst I'm listening to the music. Guess that's shy I'd never buy a kindle either.

Show us your HIFI System, by johnnyh on Jan 2, 2014 4:59:55 GMT 1, Neil disagree with some of the above. Spend well on the cart as it is the link with your record and the start of the chain. Likewise invest in top cabling as it links the amp to speakers. Top speakers invest in them. Turntable amp should be able to take the best it can produce and relay that to the speakers. Likewise the speakers must be able relay all the qualities and sounds of the amp. They are the end of the chain does not matter how good a turntable or cartridge you have or the quality of your amp if those qualities cannot be reproduced by your speakers. With size of room you do not need big speakers but you do need good response and really good sound at low levels. Test it all out with them. Bring a couple of records of different types that you know well. Get them to play them. Hear the differences and buy the ones that sound right for you Sorry Johnny have to disagree on a few points Yes good cartridge and decent cabling I agree on those points, but that goes hand in hand when spending this sort of money on a turntable amp speaker setup. I spent 2 years training at S.A.E (School of Audio Engineering) in London and was always taught the front end is where the bulk of money should be spent on any system and was informed from various BADA dealers this is also the way to go. In Neils case the turntable, arm and cartridge, as these are the items translating the analogue signal from the vinyl record. A good amp yes and speakers I agree, but an amp does just as it name says amplifies the signal and that signal is only as good as what is transmitted to it in the first place Think if you read he has already bought his turntable. So that element is now a fixed point. The problem with front end loading is just that it is front end loaded. All you have to do is put the same turntable through diff amps and diff speakers and you will hear the difference. as mentioned the best thing to do is bring what he likes to listen to get them to set up and buy what he likes and what sounds right for him. My point was not to buy top end turntable and then drop down on the other items. As mentioned speakers release the signal put poor in and poor will come out I agree with that theory but it also works te same with put quality in that cannot be put out at its maximum recreation. either way Sure Neil by the sounds of it is buying top quality kit so will not have any great probs cheers fella

Yes it's a compromise on sound quality and yes there are also cheaper ways to get the same functionality but for a stand alone music system you can't beat it.

I'm a fan of bose .. wave / acoustic and qc15.
threw out my old hifi the day i bought my first bose box.
still, at full pelt.. no distortion of any sort and that is 10 years later... any issues and bose have resolved them all free of charge.

Slight tangent but I've never heard of Radio Paradise but will be sure to listen in tomorrow - what other stations do people listen to which cover which genres?

But am Genuinely chuffed to read and listen to the forum enjoying quality sounds along with their regular interest in quality Art and images!! Always been art and music in some form where man is concerned. I also love a good fire, the basics don't change. We just have more technology in our caves!
Great thread this. I have been struggling to decide between a Bose and Sonos for the last month and after reading this have gone with the Sonos Play 5. Show us your HIFI System, by maroom on Jan 3, 2014 10:00:19 GMT 1, Great thread this and illustrative in some ways of what the forum was about 6 or so years ago, people helping out one another with a common interest. Slight tangent but I've never heard of Radio Paradise but will be sure to listen in tomorrow - what other stations do people listen to which cover which genres? Here's a few others I've found recently: KEXP SomaFM
WFMU ARTonAIR
Fip ResonanceFM
