Not on my salary either.........would have maxed my credit card, so glad someone bid above the ยฃ3,250 I tried. Makes me feel better knowing I would have had to go bid twice more given the ยฃ100 increments..........I was sweating at the ยฃ3,250, probably would have passed out at ยฃ3,350.
If I'd won I'd be selling my "Grannies".......on eBay, 100% original, 78 years old and they can knit you a nice scarf if you place your orders in quick

Banksy Golf Sale Print, by Viva Hate on Apr 5, 2007 13:22:44 GMT 1, Yeah I am thinking of selling a few prints to buy a signed. Any recommendations on what signed to go for and what the average price range is?.
I do like the look of a pulp fiction or napalm signed?...How much would they be?

For some reason Grin Reaper always seems to go for less than many others - one of Banksy's best works and criminally under priced - get one while you can

Took ages to sell out and even sold at a loss for a while after ยฃ400 from POW, 375 on ebay, its starting to be recognised as a developing classic now, doubt very much if you would get one for less than 5K ( considering signed applauses are seeing 4.5K). They were going for not much more than 3k not long ago, but as monkeypuzzle said, that was before the madness got madder - it'll be very interesting to see what the next one goes for... in the current climate I think under 5k would be something of a bargain (did I really just say that??? )

Banksy Golf Sale Print, by finsburyparkranger on Apr 5, 2007 17:19:49 GMT 1, Grin reaper is an edition of 300 signed. Flying copper and golf sale is an edition of 150 signed. Just something to bear in mind. What I want to know is in the future how will a pencil signature compare to a pen signature in regards to the price? I would imagine it could make hundreds of pounds of difference one day. Anyone got any thoughts?

Yeah, I've got a few. I think the pen signatures are going to be worth less than the pencil signatures simply because of the volatile nature of modern inks. Nobody really knows just how long they'll remain clearly visible, and you'll most certainly begin to see them begin breaking down at some point in the future. On the flip side, graphite has been around since the dawn of time and pencil lead is comprised of wholly stable elements. The paper will disintegrate before the pencil signatures suffer any degradation, and that is, I suspect, why the vast majority of artists sign their works using either paint or pencil. Not sure how many people share my point of view, but frankly, I wouldn't pay extra for a print with an ink signature because it introduces just one more element of the unknown--and that's an unwanted layer of risk. I'd rather avoid the issue altogether.
Personally, I think you've missed a key point in comparing the GR to a FC and GS, and that is total run size. Think about it. There are 750 Flying Coppers out there (one is looking over my shoulder as we speak ), and the same number of Golf Sales. That means you've got 150 chances to grab a signed, and 600 chances to grab an unsigned. This is a big deal! It goes to the simple matter of supply and demand. All of those folks who would love to own a GR but could care less about the signature if it meant they could pay 25% the price of a signed (like me) have no choice in the matter. There is only one option. Hence the supply is dramatically reduced (at least by half in comparison to nearly all other prints--and it is less than one third the total of all Morons images!), and given the broad appeal of the image, I don't see the demand going anywhere but up.
Imagine GR being similar to the other prints you mentioned, and assume at least 150 people absolutely must have a signed copy--then instead of 600 available for everybody else, there are only 150. Because the entire run is so small, all of them are signed and you'll likely *never* run into another friend or acquaintance that's got one, this print actually is much closer to the multi-color variants of the soupcans. There you have a run of 250 total (for all the colorways), and all of them are signed--with no unsigned. With only 300 total images (compared to most runs with 650 or greater in the total run), the finest production of any banksy print (so I'm told), and an image that is generally held as one of the best ever, I think GR will end up being one of the most difficult prints to obtain. Simply because it *does* generate so much art wood, and many if not most have already found permanent homes at this point in time. And think about it--you're NEVER going to see an unsigned GR. A simple glance across the room, and you know you are looking at something very special. Can you tell I absolutely love that print?!
Anyways, my point is, I think GR should really not be used as a reference for the value of other prints. Anybody who has genuinely tried to track one down will agree that the process is next to impossible, whereas most other prints from 2004 and later pop up with relative regularity.
But then again, that's just my opinion. Your actual mileage may vary.

Banksy Golf Sale Print, by Strange Al on Apr 5, 2007 18:55:37 GMT 1, tad - you're obviously a very big fan of the Grin image. I'd be interested to hear what it is about the image that strikes a chord with you (aside from the quality of the printing and its rarity).
I appreciate that it's a classic Banksy image. I think Mr Hirst has ensured that. Though, I passed up on it when it was readily available and it's not something I particularly regret. The image just doesn't evoke much emotion in me. Perhaps you can change my view.
Slightly off-topic I know. Maybe cause for a new thread - "Tad's musings on the Grin"

Banksy Golf Sale Print, by dotdot on Apr 5, 2007 19:05:35 GMT 1, for what its worth I'd have to say.. GS is one fine image - one which though may not mean too much from the sign perspective (do you see golf sale plaks in the US ?) sure does underline a message in relation to the land of china.
Mr B - has a bee in his bonnet attacking both consumerism - and also the fact that capitalism will put up with the brutality of china as long as it gives it... of course product.
The sting from this print is apt appropriate and will age nicely - if only I'd won earlier..
..anyone got a GS they'd wish to sell / swap...

for me, the image represents out with the old, in with the new. this has been mused quite a bit previously, with some saying that it is a nod to the past; HND, flying copper. also the end of banksy as a purely street artist.
personally, my love for it is less symbolic. i have always loved street work with intricasies, they appeal because you know the artist has had to take their time whilst also taking a risk. this image, along with the kind of tatoos you see on LA and yakuza gangs also do it for me. there is some element of a tatooists detail in the print, so it was no surprise to me when mr hurst's brother decided to scar himself with this image.
oh, and tadghostal: every word you said is spot on for me.
