I guess it will be a different answer for different people.
For me I have never really been into photography but this bridges a gap into a subject I am very interested in. In a similar way I am drawn to the work of Martha Cooper.
I think they are great images that will sit well in my collection. Also they have a great backstory with the direct link to Banksy. The fact that I believe them to be images of the man himself as implied in Wall & Piece makes them an interesting subject matter to look at and consider.
I only mentioned value in response to the thought that they might not be and for that part its only my opinion they are considering the price of Banksy associated works/pieces.

As to cost and value, it depends how you want to look at it. Not everything needs to be about what it's worth in the future. I want one of these (I bought the canvas sessions one) because it's a tangible and unusual part of the story of an artist I love. I see it as like wanting to visit somewhere that your favourite film was shot, or where your favourite singer was born. It's a connection to something you're passionate about, not just something that might make you a few quid down the line. £229 for a little photo is a lot, sure, if you're thinking about it as an investment. But for something you know you'll enjoy having on your wall for years, it's not much in the long run.

Exactly this. Whether it's physically him in the photos or not, they're his official portraits, as used in his book, so they're a Banksy collaboration and part of Banksy's story. In some ways, if it's not him then they're even more of a Banksy collaboration because he'd need to have given at least his approval to the concept for any photo representing him in his own book, if not created the concept himself. That's more collaborative than just picking the nicest photo someone has taken of you. As to cost and value, it depends how you want to look at it. With the 'monkey mask' portaits, the subject is quite obvious. The Banksy tag and the happy chopper lead you directly to the answer (or at least they lead you to believe the person in the picture is an artist / Banksy). What you see is pretty much what you get. As for the canvas portrait, you can look at it very differently. It could be anyone and it is open to interpretation. It isn't necessarily a portrait of Banksy. It doen't really need to be. The wall behind the subject is a clean slate, there are no tags, it doesn't scream 'street art'. It can simply be a comment on a lot of people being obsessed with their self image, having their picture taken or taking selfies and compulsively posting them on social media. Or reversely, it can be a comment on the value of anonymity. Anyway, that's my take on it in a nut shell. |

You must have because he regularly posts pictures of new pieces and re-hangs in the 'latest buy' and 'pad' threads (and I appreciate those posts very much). Absolutely amazing collection. That collection looks like a true art lover's collection to me. When you reach that level (and by that I mean owning mostly original pieces), I don't really think you can be bothered flipping pictures from such a large edition. I don't really think you can be bothered flipping anything at all really. Maybe you sell pieces to make room for new ones but I wouldn't call that flipping. I'll leave it at that. |

This isn't addressed at you Rouen, but I don't get the obsession with value all the time on this forum. People constantly told they're "mugs" for paying an amount for something others think will never sell for the same price, as if selling on is the ultimate goal. If you pay an amount you're happy with for a piece of work that makes you happy (and isn't a forgery) then what's the problem? I'd never dream of paying £5k for a Pejac print, or over £1k for a Martin Whatson, because the pleasure I'd get from them wouldn't be worth that (not slagging off either. I think both are talented, just not my favourites). If someone else wants to pay that and they love having them on their wall, great.
People who don't like these photos needn't buy them. People who buy them to flip probably aren't going to make any money. Those who've bought them because they like them seem perfectly happy with what they're getting.

People constantly told they're "mugs" for paying an amount for something others think will never sell for the same price, as if selling on is the ultimate goal. If you pay an amount you're happy with for a piece of work that makes you happy (and isn't a forgery) then what's the problem? I'd never dream of paying £5k for a Pejac print, or over £1k for a Martin Whatson, because the pleasure I'd get from them wouldn't be worth that (not slagging off either. I think both are talented, just not my favourites). If someone else wants to pay that and they love having them on their wall, great. People who don't like these photos needn't buy them. People who buy them to flip probably aren't going to make any money. Those who've bought them because they like them seem perfectly happy with what they're getting.

Your last paragraph is spot on! Sadly art collectors don't always have these priorities.
Hence a lot of talk about value in here and that they are 'collaboration'.
I think there is a lot of questions to what these really are but like you said if you like it buy it!
