A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Rouen Cathedral on Oct 17, 2018 17:04:48 GMT 1, Doubt it. Why spend any time on PC??? What's with banksys obsession on authenticating, and knowing Everytime a work changes hands. It bizarre. PC is a useful service for people who like Banksy artwork and want to buy or people who bought and now want to sell. It gives peace of mind to sellers and buyers as prices have got steeper to ensure someone is not buying a WCP or Radar Rat record sleeve thinking they are buying a real Banksy. It was not needed when you could buy Banksy prints for ยฃ35-ยฃ100 but as soon as the fakes started for serious money then it became an issue and is helpful for those who need it.
That's all dandy.
So what other artists go through that level of control?

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Rouen Cathedral on Oct 17, 2018 17:10:02 GMT 1, Whatever you think about the Banksy Sotheby's auction stunt, it's sometimes worth drawing breath for a moment to realise that we're in the midst of a piece of of art history. And that is really exciting. Too much time is spent by art critics looking back at what's gone on in the past. Will Gompterz - that BBC bloke with the baldy bonce - says this about Love Is In The Bin: "It will come to be seen as one of the most significant artworks of the early 21st Century." He's worth a read: www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-45818204.
From a 1000 foot view that's right. And from a close view that's right if banksy actually pulled this off as it's being played.
But if Sotheby's helped pull off the stunt that matters.
Not sure you can argue the anti establishment artist of the century teaming up with the establishment can create the most significant artwork of the century. But I would love to hear the argument for it?

Most enlightening part of that article:
(That this person wasnโt automatically charged to place the work in the auction indicates that this was not a new relationship, and Iโm told this PR liaison acts as a regular, go-to conduit for Banksy to feed art into the auction stream).

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Rouen Cathedral on Oct 17, 2018 23:46:32 GMT 1, Lol. What a disaster.
So wait. Now it was an actual shredder and not the xacto blades?
Oh and Sotheby's just let's random people film the cocktail party and auction these days.
Like someone posted earlier. If this was real it would have happened and banksy should have just left it be.
And can someone answer the timeline thing. It's appears Sotheby's did not have this piece for six years based on the previous article.

Yeah it puts to rest whether this whole thing was a sham and marketing pr. Clearly was based on that video.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by elevenspots on Oct 18, 2018 0:04:30 GMT 1, My take on events....
This 'stunt' was conceived X amount of months/years ago. Recently, in the last 6 months - Banksy made this work and then gave it to a connected associate who obviously put it into auction with agreement from Banksy.
Sotheby's agreed to the work being made in 2006 - as this is what pest control confirmed with them (who lied - it was made no more than a year ago!). It was hyped by people within the art world and also pest control - hence the reason why it was given centre stage and last billing.
The bidding on the night was high, like a lot of auctions - people with a vested interest bid up work to help keep "stock values" high.
The highest bidder could have been connected with Banksy - although this is not important. It's likely they where - as paying for an item that became damaged etc, would have been difficult for all parties involved.
Obviously, BANKSY and PEST CONTROL lied. That was the idea - it was a stunt, the battery never would have lasted that long anyway.
Sotheby's could not have known - however "bent" some people think the auction houses are, it's not them you should watch out for - its the people in the crowd bidding.
Shoot me down......

"My view? It is art. Made by an artist who many don't rate but I do. Why? Because he has something to say.
You might not agree with him, but at least he is making art that penetrates the public consciousness; art that is in the world, not detached from it; art that raises questions that need an airing. !!!!
Banksy makes art that, as Hamlet said, holds "โฆthe mirror up to nature: to show virtue her feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure."
And what artwork better captures the spirit of our times than Love is in the Bin? I can't think of one.

This is the best analysis in favor of the work I've seen.
Too many are trying to defend the details (which honestly don't hold up) and pump the action but as simply put by you I think this is the strongest defense and most correct.
Like someone said earlier. Banksy should have let the work occur and then just let it live.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by jp on Oct 18, 2018 4:14:44 GMT 1, Latest from Banksy. Just posted on instagram and you tube. Directors cut!! You tube link. I wonder how many canvases were shredded before they felt confident enough to move forward with the stunt.
I'm glad he at least tried to shed some light on some of the conspiracy theories. Unfortunately the video won't change the minds of those who just have to find fault and invent their own narrative. That's really the best compliment to Banksy though; their indignation is a real testament to the strength of the artist.

Or that the same artists would come up with a clever ploy to take the piss out of/confuse/embarrass said people?

Big respect for the stunt, it was great. Just a shame as you can tell B has never soldered and wouldnโt have made this. Good on them though and a great video.

' guys please stop bidding we have a surrpise to get to...' Such comedy really. You can read too much into the auctioneer's attitude.
Look at how he behaved during the Kaws auction... laughing, taking the piss, and just calling it Sponge Bob. He's a funny guy and that's why he does these big auctions.
Also, the "surprise" I think was mentioned earlier on this thread somewhere, I don't remember where I read it, but there was an extra, unlisted piece for auction at the end (after the Banksy).

You strike me as someone who will never be happy, whatever the reality. This works either way for me. Whether Banksy conspired with Sotheby's, or if he conned them, is irrelevant. The point is that it happened. Your continuing doubt just adds to the debate the stunt was intended to create.

I was quite happy when I started this thread. Then I saw the details not aligning and bogus attempts to defend them even by banksy himself.
If banksy (and his defenders) would have just let it live that would have been something. Now he is the one sealioning LOL! Dappy must be quite displeased ๐
If you think it's irrelevant whether banksy conspired with them especially after he's so adimitly denied it then you are the one with their mind made up to just accept it as great cause it's banksy.
Like I said when I first saw it I thought it was great. Now that the defenders, over sensalizing mass culture got hold of it it's been ruined. I guess that's what tends to happen. Sadly the artist is fueling that as well.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Rouen Cathedral on Oct 18, 2018 13:00:13 GMT 1, Oh man and the way that auctioneer is hamming it up at the end...
You might be right about the auctioneer.
Why did they remove the banksy? Was it right away?

Surely this is just another one of the falsified pieces of information in this story.
So we are to believe that the industrial shredder malfunctioned leaving the image in an optional position to still be hung, viewed and creating an iconic image. Where as if it was fully shredded this would not be the case.
Yeah okay... Guys I have some ocean front property in Nebraska for sale.
This worked out exactly how Banksy planned.
