A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by touchdowntodd on Oct 18, 2018 13:49:24 GMT 1, If I was the new buyer I would be disappointed to learn that the piece did not end up as the artist intended. Surely this is just another one of the falsified pieces of information in this story. So we are to believe that the industrial shredder malfunctioned leaving the image in an optional position to still be hung, viewed and creating an iconic image. Where as if it was fully shredded this would not be the case. Yeah okay... Guys I have some ocean front property in Nebraska for sale. This worked out exactly how Banksy planned.
Let's not over think this.. video says it "worked perfectly".. yes, shredder did it's job. Just because the one in video completely shredded doesn't mean after that test he didn't set a shred to point
Anyone that thinks this wasn't equally as exciting and smart as his other pranks on the public is crazy... Like he's never had assistance from companies and people before lol. Not to mention , you've got to be at that point to where Sotheby's would allow this. Have a barely known artist ask to do anything remotely like this there, they'd laugh u out of the building. The notion that he's allowed shows you his place in art and history right now.....
The social media growth, buzz amongst non art fans, etc show this was genius. It's undeniable
And any of us would love to own the piece (if you're a fan at least).. my first thought was I hope it's actually sold and not taken back by him

At least you recognise that he’s created an iconic image.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by met on Oct 18, 2018 15:08:18 GMT 1, Latest from Banksy. Just posted on instagram and you tube. Directors cut!! You tube link. I wonder how many canvases were shredded before they felt confident enough to move forward with the stunt. I'm glad he at least tried to shed some light on some of the conspiracy theories. Unfortunately the video won't change the minds of those who just have to find fault and invent their own narrative. That's really the best compliment to Banksy though; their indignation is a real testament to the strength of the artist.
No disagreement with your general position. However, the reasoning presented isn't sound.
It lacks general application, in that the same argument could also be used to defend terrible artists.
Someone could fart, loudly and repeatedly, in a crowded elevator of their office building. They might then claim this was great performance art. And perhaps they'd even be right. But the indignation of their work colleagues would not in itself be a real testament to their strength as an artist.

Now if it was Banksy on the elevator it would be even greater. Quite possibly the greatest work of art in a century.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by moron on Oct 20, 2018 21:41:14 GMT 1, What's more ludicrous? that the most high profile anti-establishment, anti corporation, anti more money than sense, anti capitalist, anti over hyped auction art, anti old school money entitlement etc ect artist would work with a gallery that pretty much represents most of those things. Or that the same artists would come up with a clever ploy to take the piss out of/confuse/embarrass said people? That's basically what Banksy fans choose to believe. They ignore what is in front of them. Banksy is a marketing campaign. Shove girl with balloon image in front of peoples faces via the media and social media etc etc enough times and hype it up and it becomes an "iconic image" Where as in reality it is a very boring and bland image.
People buy into what suits them.
The Sotheby's stunt was clever but just a stunt. A painting in a frame shreds itself when the hammer goes down. It would have fitted right in in a Dave Allen TV show comedy sketch.
The critics saying it's another Duchamp greatest art this century are just lazy and write anything these days because they know the people that buy into this stuff.
Duchamp made a statement when he put his urinal in an art exhibition.
What statement did Banksy make with this lot, apart from look at me, i'm very clever.
He critics capitalism and sells out to it.
So do all some of the people who invest in Banksy prints.
