Glastonbury Festival, by mutatis on Jun 27, 2017 16:53:58 GMT 1, I and two fiends picked up a screen print each tonight in the Shangri La art giveaway - one by Pure Evil, signed but not numbered on A3, and two of another, numbered /35 and signed, also on A3, which I'll post details of along with pics of both when I get out of this glorious asylum and back to some semblance of normality. The whole experience of getting the prints was wonderful. and slghtly twisted in a somewhat Dismaland-esque kind of way. Again I'll describe, if people are interested, when I'm more capable. Also earlier treated myself to a nice B&W A2 Letterpress Donwood open edition festival print on cheap paper. A tenner and probably never worth any more than that, but I like it. That one's in a tube - the others are safe in my A3 portfolio locked in a tool store. Hopeful they'll get home safe and sound. Without doubt picking up the Shangri La prints was the moment of a Glastonbury full of wonderful ones. It might be over-commercial and all of the other accusations people level at it, but I keep coming because I've been coming for 33 years, and because I meet up with friends who I only ever see here, and because I love working here, but mostly because for all its many faults it's still a place where vast numbers of creative people can and do make things and make things happen. I haven't been near a main stage this year, I haven't seen a headline act, I've been busy all the time, I'll be taking two new prints home with me on Tuesday that have meaning and memory attached because of how I came by them - the cacophany is still blasting out into the brightening sky, and I can't stop smiling. Excellent - sounds like you had a fabulous and rewarding time.
Iโm curious about your experience. Mine was straightforward, but Iโll share it.
I saw the printers from the Private Press when I was in Shangri-La on Saturday afternoon and said Iโd seen people with prints walking around. They were the ones pasted up on the walls outside their unit. They told me to come back that evening around 11.30 if I wanted a free Donwood print. Logistics worked in my favour as I had intended to see the Dead Kennedys literally next door and as they were Biafraless it wasnโt good, so I got there around 11. There were already about 10 people in the queue.
A kind chap in the queue told me that they had given away a Paul Insect print and I should ask in case they still have some left. When the hatch opened and I got to the front, the chap dispensing the prints remembered me and offered me the Donwood or the option of having a Dan Hillier signed and numbered print. Dan was giving away his prints in person and I had a brief chat with him as the print image was familiar and he described it as a โremixโ. I asked if there were any Paul Insectโs left and he went off and had a rummage and came back with one for me. Itโs a variation of โLibertyโ A3 size printed on quite thick card (as has been posted).
On Sunday after the Pure Evil giveaway they cleared their general stock and I picked up a black and white Paul Insect / Bast poster.
Well done to the Private Press and the artists for the initiative a nice bonus. I suspect unless you came prepared it would have been difficult but not impossible to protect the prints. I hope given the effort that went into the printing that prints survived.
I will try and post some general pics later.

Glastonbury Festival, by stress on Jun 27, 2017 17:59:36 GMT 1, This was my first ever time at Glastonbury and we were walking around seeing all the sights and sounds with some regulars from about 11am Sunday - 3am Monday. Just so happened to arrive at the giveaway as they opened the hatch, so got in the queue. Between the four of us in our group we got all three colours of the Pure Evil print (red, white, and grey). I offered to look after them all and have managed to get them home with no damage whatsoever. I didn't even know about the giveaway until we got to the hatch, so it was a nice surprise!
Thoroughly enjoyed my Glastonbury experience. The highlight has to be Arcadia... and the night views from the (Hollywood style) Glastonbury sign.

Glastonbury Festival, by mutatis on Jun 28, 2017 10:12:07 GMT 1, Something for those coming back to answer (although it's not over yet) - What were the top 3 moments for you from this years festival? Here you go, it would be good to hear about others too as I'm sure each one will be wildly different:
1. Soundclash in Shangri-La featuring Jah Wobble and his crew v Youth and his crew which included Mixmaster Morris and Matt Black (Coldcut). To see on Youth's side 4 of them at a time tweaking the sound and rocking in unison was a sight to behold and the bass lines and tunes were fitting of a soundclash with a few specials thrown in. The system was ace and the bass literally shook the foundations. Add to that live sax over the top and it was a visually and aurally stimulating set.
2. The Avalanches set at West Holts with Spank Rock totally smashed it and at an hour long my only complaint was that it was a tad too short.
3=. Being in the Cineramageddon field, a new field this year curated by Joe Rush (Mutoid Waste, Trash City etc etc ) and Julien Temple and hearing the roar for Jeremy Corbyn way over on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday. It was LOUD as I walked forever to get to Cineramageddon so it could even have been in another town .
The field itself is a cinema field and full of Mutoid Waste(d) vehicles which one can sit in to watch the films ... Iโll avoid commenting on Corbynmania at the festival other than to say it seemed to be in full effect throughout the festival. This translated to lots of performers whom it was good to know were informed and some involved in what is going on domestically but it didn't necessarily always come across as genuine.
3=. Fujiya & Miyagi at the William's Green Tent. A band I've liked for a long time but hadnโt listened to anything of theirs for years so I decided to rectify that. I was not disappointed and got treated to songs I hadnโt heard.
I didnโt see any cameras in the tent and doubt it was filmed but here is one of their most recent songs.
I am not sure if the Avalanches set was filmed despite all the gear to do so being at their stage, but if it does, it is worth catching.
Honorable mentions: (1) Solange for reminding me that there are no exceptions to the rule that everybody deserves a chance. Performance art? Similarly I saw about 15 minutes of Lorde and the staging looked interesting (but not the music).
(2) Radiohead for reminding me of how many good songs they recorded between the Bends and In Rainbows and that I should find time to acquaint myself with their post In Rainbows material.
(3) A festival is more than just the music and events it is also very much about the people that attend. Maybe I am just lucky, but every time I go, I always seem to have multiple random encounters with strangers that are positively heart-warming and reaffirming of my faith in humanity.

Glastonbury Festival, by mutatis on Jun 28, 2017 12:07:46 GMT 1, Anyone see Toots and the Maytels? They are a semi-permanent and very popular fixture, so I hope they played, but they were due on before The Avalanches on Saturday at 5.30 and must have been running really late as I went off somewhere else when they hadn't come on at 5.45 and quite a few people were agitated and worried they were at the wrong stage. I hope Toots is well.

I can't imagine they will be miniture, just more manageable in the home environment and a bit more refined

Glastonbury Festival, by Martin DK on Jun 28, 2017 20:42:28 GMT 1, I and two fiends picked up a screen print each tonight in the Shangri La art giveaway - one by Pure Evil, signed but not numbered on A3, and two of another, numbered /35 and signed, also on A3, which I'll post details of along with pics of both when I get out of this glorious asylum and back to some semblance of normality. I hope given the effort that went into the printing that prints survived. I will try and post some general pics later.
Wow, very jealous! I really like the liberty print, and that Paul Insect / Bast poster sounds tasty! Would love to see photos when you have the time. Congrats!

Wow, very jealous! I really like the liberty print, and that Paul Insect / Bast poster sounds tasty! Would love to see photos when you have the time. Congrats!

Glastonbury Festival, by rockbeer on Jun 28, 2017 21:45:40 GMT 1, I and two fiends picked up a screen print each tonight in the Shangri La art giveaway - one by Pure Evil, signed but not numbered on A3, and two of another, numbered /35 and signed, also on A3, which I'll post details of along with pics of both when I get out of this glorious asylum and back to some semblance of normality. The whole experience of getting the prints was wonderful. and slghtly twisted in a somewhat Dismaland-esque kind of way. Again I'll describe, if people are interested, when I'm more capable. Also earlier treated myself to a nice B&W A2 Letterpress open edition festival print on cheap paper. A tenner and probably never worth any more than that, but I like it. That one's in a tube - the others are safe in my A3 portfolio locked in a tool store. Hopeful they'll get home safe and sound. Great to hear your tale - mine was similar but just a little twisted. I didn't find out about the giveaway till Sunday, which was a pity as I'd have loved a chance at a Paul Insect or the Donwood (what was the Donwood image?) But I was working the whole time till I finally got a day off on Sunday, when I went for a wander and stopped by the Free Press at the bottom of the theatre field. Bought the B&W Donwood Keep Your Cool there and picked up a copy of the Free Press, which featured a tiny line about the Shangri La print shop. I wandered down there and had a chat about art with the very kind and helpful woman there, who told us to stop by about 11 if we wanted a chance at the freebies. I could see all the Cullen Petrol Bombs hanging behind her, and she said they'd be giving those away along with the signed Pure Evil edition - if they could find him to get him to sign them. She showed us the print and my friend fell for it big time.
We headed down to SL again about 10 and had a good look around and took some photos, and about 10.45 a queue began to form at the print shop so we joined it, I guess at this stage we were a dozen or 15 places from the front. We waited for a good while as the queue grew, until eventually a 'steward' turned up with blue flashing lights on his head and began going down the line telling everyone that the shop was closed for the night and they were wasting their time queuing. Unbelievably, a few people at the front walked away, but we stayed put and waited some more. Then a crusty looking bloke turned up and started saying that he was bezzie mates with the organiser and knew for a fact that he'd had to go off site and there would be no giveaway that night. More people left, and by now we were virtually at the front. The crusty feller disappeared and a while after that the people at the very front atarted squealing with excitement. A print had appeared, pushed through the crack between the hatch and its frame. It was taken - a Petrol Bomb - to be followd a minute or two later by a Pure Evil, also collected. A couple more followed, and then I found myself at the very front.
A Pure Evil appeared through the crack and I tried to take it, but it was held fast on the other side and I couldn't extract it. I paused then tried a couple more times, but it was stuck fast. Then it was withdrawn and all went still.
Silence.
Mutterings began in the crowd. Was that it? Was it over already? What was happening?
After a minute or two of this, the hatch began to shake a little, and then it started to open, really really slowly. I saw three bodies appear in the gap, and when their faces were finally revealed one of them tirned out to be Darren Cullen, who I know a little. We shook hands and had a little chat and he handed me a petrol bomb while one of the other guys handed my friend the Pure Evil she really wanted - it might have been Pure Evil himself who handed it over, I honestly have no idea.
We left happy.
The whole thing was brilliantly done, and I loved the banter in the queue, with everyone debating whether it was all a wind up, whether to stay, whether the plants were genuine or not - and randoms coming up the whole time and asking what we were all queuing for. Even my friends at one point started to talk about givig up, but I wasn't going anywhere and in the end they were glad they stuck it out with me. The ones who left must be feeling gutted.
A brilliant giveaway and huge respect to all concerned. I'll try and take photos of the prints and post them tomorrow. My head is still melted tonight.

Glastonbury Festival, by mutatis on Jun 29, 2017 11:30:12 GMT 1, rockbeer I missed all that but there did feel like more of an element of a tease on Sunday in the friendliest possible way. I saw the aftermath of a successful marriage proposal in the queue which was totally random!
Charlie (Pure Evil) was indeed at the hatch handing out his prints. A red one of the Lenin's would have been fun. The prints must have gone quickly as the queue was bigger than for the previous night and then as if by way of appeasement for the stragglers they produced masses of posters and placed them on the front. There was a Pork Pies poster of Theresa May and some Bast and Paul Insect ones and lots to do with Earache Records (the grindcore and death metal label) who took over part of Shangri-La.
Iโll take some pics once theyโve flattened. The Donwood print was of his billboard at the Truth stage โ see my post above with pic in "If You're A Proper F****** Thief .....
I'm glad for you that your perseverance paid off.

Glastonbury Festival, by mutatis on Jun 29, 2017 12:21:54 GMT 1, very well put mutatis Always so funny to see people saying "it ain't what it used to be"... You're right it ain't, but that doesn't mean that what it is isn't still appealing to a lot of people, and you can hardly blame a festival for bringing joy and amusement to a large number of folks. Saying "it was better back in the day" mostly shows how much of an old fart you are, oblivious to the fact that there are new festivals / happenings popping up all over the world, but you've not heard about them because you're too busy typing about how nostalgia ain't what it used to be A more interesting angle to this "ain't what it used to be" debate is whether any form of counterculture can survive without being absorbed by consumerism, and merchandising. I would strongly advise reading Debord's "Sociรฉtรฉ du spectacle" (am sure it has been translated) on this. Will also be very useful and though provoking for those who like to say this place ain't what it used to be Thanks for the reference to Debord.

That may have been me in the queue who told you about them giving out the Paul Insect the day before!
I managed to leave with 5 prints
Paul Insect // Dan Hillier // Stanley Donwood // Evan Harris (so they told me but it just doesn't seem like one of his, makes no sense it would be from him) and a 5th print that they guys who were giving them out couldn't tell me who it was from haha, they have told me to email them next week to find out.
Missed out on the Darren Cullen and the Pure Evil as I took the kids this year and had to get them back home.
I had a friend with me who isn't at all interested in art, he said I can have the Paul Insect if I want it, but I would like to try and trade it for a Pure Evil so if anyone grabbed a spare PLEASE hit me up!!!
Got them all out safely in a tube, will post pictures of them soon!

I managed to leave with 5 prints Paul Insect // Dan Hillier // Stanley Donwood // Evan Harris (so they told me but it just doesn't seem like one of his, makes no sense it would be from him) and a 5th print that they guys who were giving them out couldn't tell me who it was from haha, they have told me to email them next week to find out.

Glastonbury Festival, by mutatis on Jun 30, 2017 2:14:19 GMT 1, Excellent - sounds like you had a fabulous and rewarding time. Credit where credit is due. I'm glad I described you as a kind chap . Plot thickens re emailing them to find out about that print ... One of the members of the team from the Private Press who was handing out the prints, I recognise from the picture in the link below. Good luck in sourcing a Pure Evil.
