Prints in Tubes, by yobaby on Jan 3, 2017 20:08:17 GMT 1, I've just been give a Mau Mau Fox Mask for Christmas and the missus has had it it the tube for over a year and it went flat in a few hours by itself. This is what I'm talking about. It makes obvious sense to store a print flat especially if it's layered up with thick paint etc BUT the flip side is the above story you hear. I've been in touch with a dealer who's got a mint/like new never mounted tubed print from 2012. Says he takes the print out from to time along with other tubed prints before tubing them again. It boggles my mind to hear this yet it seems perfectly fine to this person to mention this as if it's no big deal. They're not the first I've come across who openly say that their prints haven't been removed from the tube since the day they've been received. Conventional wisdom points one way but others feel that with modern inks and papers there's not much to worry about. i.e.: would you pay top dollar for a Banksy from 2007 if it has never been removed from the tube?

Prints in Tubes, by Bazaaart on Jan 3, 2017 20:14:06 GMT 1, A factor in the condition of the print depends on is the surrounding room where the tube is. If it is in a room with a lot of moisture then definitely it will get damaged. Second fine art prints should be laid out flat as soon as possible so to avoid any creasing.

Prints in Tubes, by Howard Johnson on Jan 3, 2017 23:50:31 GMT 1, The biggest component is the specifications of the print (i.e. Inks used, paper stock, ect). The while storing prints rolled is frowned upon, the majority of them will be ok and will usually require a simple flattening by a qualified conservationist.

Prints in Tubes, by warsaw project on Apr 14, 2017 15:29:58 GMT 1, Hi All, Im after a bit of advise please
Just picked up some bits from my parents house, There is a Screen Print which i was sure was sitting in my portfolio, but ive since found out its still Tubed. Its on what id call heavy stock paper and has been in the tube for 3 years ish
Ive removed it to have a quick look, its obviously tightly rolled and im reluctant to Un-roll without advise.
Has anyone unrolled such a print :-) ? Or perhaps no one has been as foolish as me :-)
Any advise would be welcomed... Im also wondering if it would be better to send it to a professional to get it flat, is that something anyone has done before ?
Im planning on framing it as soon as i can get flat, so i suppose another option would be to have a framer flatten it. Im not sure theyd do it though ?!

Prints in Tubes, by kultur on Apr 14, 2017 18:29:41 GMT 1, the worst thing you can do is re-roll it. it is going to take time... just let it sit in a safe place for a while and them you can very slowly open it up using lighter objects to slowly flatten it... sometimes i will unravel one side so that it makes two rolls and gently it will flatten as i move the rolls. the more you force the process the fibers of the paper break. it has been 3years so there cant be a rush to get it framed up.
a good restorer will do the same and it will take time there also

Prints in Tubes, by Lroy on Apr 15, 2017 1:41:41 GMT 1, I bought a Jboy print ( you know parody of Banksy/Haring/Hoodie/dog a long time ago and, apparently the seller has sent me one that has stayed a long time in the tube ! Impossible to keep it flat. Oh yes, I made it at the end, but I have made great damages ( creases etc .., ) on the paper. Shameful.

Prints in Tubes, by pking1601 on Sept 24, 2017 7:14:41 GMT 1, I got a box of tubes from defendapack on Wednesday. First time I have had to order tubes from anywhere so not sure how they compare to other makes but a friend of mine recommended defendapack to me and my initial thoughts was that they seemed pretty strong especially the 3mm thickness. Obviously remains to be seen if they stand up to posting. They offer free delivery as well. I paid ยฃ3.50 and they were there next day.

Prints in Tubes, by lg2771 on Jan 9, 2018 20:36:39 GMT 1, I just received a print and it's packed nicely in a tube, but I'm moving in a couple of weeks and don't want to frame it right away. Is it alright to leave it in there until the end of the month?
Thank you!

Prints in Tubes, by kember on Jan 9, 2018 20:41:49 GMT 1, Yeah be fine as long as it's not crazy thick paper hand finished with paint, if it's a particularly expensive or meaningful piece maybe check the paper isn't directly against the card as tubes are generally acidic and can therefore damage the paper over long periods, especially if accelerated by temperature/moisture.

Is it alright to leave it in there until the end of the month? Thank you! It really depends on the paper type, printing technique and use of any additional materials eg. Diamond dust. A month in the tube is probably safer whilst moving house. Or,,, even better would be to get it out and put it between some foam core and let it be one of the last things you move out. Also doing this will have it all nice and flat for the framer to do his magic.

I like to let em breathe for about a week and then start flattening and that may take a month or so.
That's my preference but of course, like said above, depends on the type of paper.

I bought some prints for my walls. But right now i am traveling until 4. february. I ordered the prints home to my dad. Would it be ok, to just let them be in the tubes for does months? Or can i hurt the pictures? Make them bend or something?
Best regards. Rinz

I'd be more concerned that the prints could have been damaged in transit and you probably won't have a leg to stand on in 4 months time if you tried to get a refund.

Prints in Tubes, by Pipes on Oct 21, 2019 15:11:21 GMT 1, Hi Rinz
Keeping a print rolled is not a good idea. The fibres of the paper start to bend to the shape.
Best plan is to buy some foam board and leave between 2 sheets.
Leave the prints to flatten naturally first rather than flatten with foam board immediately.
