Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by Rubberneck on Sept 18, 2020 22:08:52 GMT 1, Bloody hell itโs getting to the point of selling up. To the average person the money is getting too high to be worth keeping a little bit of paper on the wall! Your right Aza, I'm struggling to see that much money on the wall. a nice family holiday, classic car (MGA!) and some nice treats for just one piece of paper that cost ยฃ450! very tempting. Gotta remember that dreaded Capital Gains Tax though, thats a big cheque to right to HMRC!!, and i don't think you can avoid it. Itโs a difficult one, because you wonโt find a better investment at the moment

Stages of a bubble
Prices have never risen so fast (just like tech did this summer) and then there was a sell off /correction.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by Pawel on Sept 18, 2020 22:16:13 GMT 1, Sorry to compare to stocks - but are we at "Delusion" Stages of a bubbleย Nobody knows where we are at, but for LIITA to continue the increase from 36k to 230k in 4 months it would be 1.2M in January. I would say it's rather unlikely.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by aki on Sept 18, 2020 22:18:40 GMT 1, How much is CGT, I have no idea? you get an annual exemption allowance of ยฃ12k and you are liable for tax at 20% on profit above that.
Do you still pay capital gains if you brought from source?

I personally think, you can not compare stocks with art, but this is just personal. I understand where you come from and what you mean and yes, it looks like that on the first view.
For me with this kind of art it is different, Banksy is in our times right now the most famous artist alive, his works are full of powerful messages so nearly everybody will find one work from him, to identify with / to like it. If you compare, how many prints are out of him ( I do not know an exact number, but happy to know ) I think this is not so much, so I believe, that the prices will still go higher and higher, but of course more slowly.

You also should have had the item for at least a year. You can also use your capital gains tax allowance for the previous year if you didn't use it...........

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง, by jstjst on Sept 18, 2020 22:47:22 GMT 1, Nobody knows where we are at, but for LIITA to continue the increase from 36k to 230k in 4 months it would be 1.2M in January. I would say it's rather unlikely. Look at other collectible markets. They are all approaching unsustainable territory with prices. And in the next few months you've got the US election, Brexit deadline, and we still have covid and a vaccine to deal with. The unemployment rate is still high, places are going through shutdowns businesses are filing for bankruptcies and having layoffs. People are trying to move money out of traditional things like the stock market and housing and into other non traditional assets. If these are at the top of the bubble, you will see a massive crash and sell off in the near future. If the stock market crashes on top of non standard speculative assets, it will be a blood bath. Or Alternatively - liquidity from central governments continue to support markets and alternative investments continue to steadily rise. Traditional investments, inc. property and old style โblue chipโ stocks (oil, banks etc.) remain unattractive. TINA comes in to play - there is no alternative - money canโt be spent on luxury items like holidays, interests rates give little return on cash - those with cash continue to invest in things like art. Limited supply comes into play too, sustaining prices, supported by a small number of v wealthy investors with too much invested to allow a crash to play out.

You cant use previous years allowance, its use it or lose it, you cant bank amy of your allowance. There used to be some sort of sliding scale based on how long you owned an item but that bit the dust a while ago. The thread from a few weeks back covered it in good detail, some accountant / tax advisor types contributed, one chap from canada explained it all in detail.
