100% agree I have no problem building my collection this way. I have sold some of my prints to pay bills, buy new pieces etc. On the other side I have many wonderful pieces on the walls.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by dmf on Dec 26, 2008 1:57:01 GMT 1, I was very unlucky this year, along with probably thousands of others, to miss out on both Banksy releases. So with this in mind how do i obtain what i missed out on? Well there are two possible options
The first involves me shelling out a four grand to people that insist...' reason for sale is due to finance issues' As mentioned by many other members this must be utter rubbish as they had the money to shell out in the first place!
The second is to myself obtain a print also considered lucrative, at a future date, in the hope that i can sell for an inflated price or indeed swap.
What does this make me?
Is it considered flipping to buy a print, that i don't particulary like in order to fund that of one i missed out on? This maybe a bit of a f**ked up way of doing things but feel that the current market dictates this to me. It somewhat saddens me to think that popularity forces the hand.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by mred on Dec 26, 2008 10:46:40 GMT 1, Let the past go - Forget considering buying stuff you don't want to flip and look for new artists producing exciting work at reasonable prices and enjoy their work rather than chase a name. Only my opinion and not meant to offend anyone at this time of peace.
I adopted this approach a couple of years ago and have now given up chasing Mr B and for that matter Mr W and am enjoying great art from a range of other artist including Ripper1331, K-Guy, Mau Mau, Copyright, Ria Hill, Will St Leger to name a few.
For the price of a Mr B print you could own a wonderful original from any of these artists. Just a thought. Also may remove some of the hype and high prices associated with some of the big names so in long term discourage the flippers.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by jonpud on Dec 26, 2008 11:50:44 GMT 1, If you buy offf the secondary market within days, even months of release then you are simply fuelling the flippers and lining their pockets, leaving them to brag to their mates about th print they bought for £350 and sold for £2000 - Easy Money! Next thing you know their mates are in on the act and it spirals so that you get no chance of bagging a new release.
I realize that if you don't buy it then someone will, but I for one can't live with the thought that I put the smile on one of these parasites faces!
It's just a piece of paper, bollocks to them, leave it a couple of years, buy or swap with someone who has enjoyed the piece on their wall but is now tired of it or needing to make space. Who know's in the meantime you might be lucky and bag a new release registered in your own name!!
Plenty of other great artists out there selling prints for sensible money with great images, even original works at a fraction of the cost or the same price as a multiple Banksy image!
One last thing, I love CWSB, one day I will get a signed copy, but for now I have a great CWSB canvas that cost only £65 that gives me the image and is great to look at. I don't condone copying Banksy work, but Banksy himself promotes it and even my mother has a few 'Constables' on her wall!!!!

I like guy denning's work but not enough to purchase an original (i got the bristol series which was great value and some lovely prints in there). I'd looked at the 12daysofxmas site and they had some original sketches there which were a good price.
As various people have said on here for the 2.5k that it would cost to get a nola or vlh on the 2ndary market you could get some amazing originals by some other established artists, and even for the £400 odd quid these prints were originally you could by some nice stuff by up and coming artists.
While i would love a signed banksy print again i don't think that i will ever get one - i have been unlucky at pow which i have no problem with, but i just can't accept paying secondary prices for them when there is so much other great art available for the same cost.
A banksy is a banksy, and i'd love one but ultimately it is an idea he's had, painted/sketched/stencilled, someone else has printed and he's signed it. In contrast i love the idea that with originals that the artist has spent hours, possibly days working on a piece rather than just signing it.

Personally think that just 'cos the economy would appear to have gone to shit isn't a better excuse for a flip now that it was 18 months ago but it's also refreshing to see that there's very little 'profit' in anything apart from Banksy nowadays which gives a better market place for swapping something you've owned for a bit and got tired of for whatever reason and not getting 'bent over' on the next piece you want.

PUD is absolutely spot on about this. The amount of people that rocked-up to POW open day thinking they could (and clearly some did) manage to get a VLH when they barely new who Banksy actually was, was pretty clear.....the same mucky individuals who probably jam Ticketmaster's website when the next exclusive gig tickets are released. These people will always exist and fuelling their fire by buying prints from them only encourages them further.
The only positive is that if you look at most prints (other than Banksy) that have been released in the last few months since the economic gloom has taken hold, most have been selling for less than cost on ebay a month or so after release. This is reassuring as the people I refer to above will soon grow tired of losing money on prints and move onto something else, leaving more for the people that actually want them.
The other positive is that if galleries/printers like BRP and POW have their "s**t lists", then the serial flippers will soon be pushed out of the picture altogether. For all those clever sods that think by waiting until the print is in hand will avoid this problem are sorely mistaken - I'm sure these galleries/printers are watching the ebay activity AFTER prints have been sent out as well.

To be honest though you gotta be damned lucky to ever get one print on drop, let alone get one a second time round. Repeat flipping of banksy prints by the same people surely can't be happening on he scale of say Shepard Fairey prints. Therefore this "sh*t list" cant be that long? Granted it does'nt necessarily include just Banksy print flippers but any artist on there roster at POW.
Could be wrong but think is a valid point.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by snausages on Dec 26, 2008 19:44:15 GMT 1, buy a print, that i don't particulary like in order to fund that of one i missed out on? Got no problem with laddering up. But never buy art you don't like, especially in this market. I know it really sucks to miss out, but consider that a year ago I thought about (but then thought better) about buying a grin reaper for $8-9000. Now someone just bought one here for the equivalent of $4000. I know it's still a lot of money but there are good deals to be had if you can possibly swing it.

More would be on walls rather than eBay!!!
The solution is in the artist hands not the flippers

No one is holding a gun to anyone's head to pay 3000 let alone 350 pounds to buy a print so don't blame the artist. The artist need not ruin his market just to satisfy your material desires of owning a Banksy print.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by Martin Whatson on Dec 27, 2008 1:22:07 GMT 1, Personally I dont like flipping for the sole purpose of making a quick buck! I find the search/hunt for a piece/print you really want one of the most interesting things with the whole collection part! The work you have to put down to expand your collection is why I like collecting! If I worked all the hours I spent searching, f5ing or discussing all this im sure I would be able to buy several of the pieces thats on my wanted list at the moment, but i still think the hunt is fun and seeing what you can get out of little money! Ive also only once bought a piece on the secondary market, and that is still my favorite print! Do whatever you want, and as long as you do it because you love the art and not the money its fine with me!
