Banksy Rat Mural in NYC - New York, by ricosg11 on Sept 30, 2008 3:47:32 GMT 1, the upcoming news, whatever it may be, will do nothing for the price of your screen prints. not trying to be a dick, just realistic. Nothing happened during the ghetto last year and that was one of the most publicized, philanthropic events in quite some time. Whatver is coming will be great, but if youre looking foward to it to push prices youre sorely mistaken.

Banksy Rat Mural in NYC - New York, by worlddomination on Sept 30, 2008 9:51:14 GMT 1, Of course it's a Banksy and everyone knows that there is a NY show it's the worst best kept secret of the year. Could it possibly coincide with an SG in NY too and a release of the Sale Ends print over crimbo...... who knows!

Banksy Rat Mural in NYC - New York, by seidbereit on Sept 30, 2008 15:49:08 GMT 1, I side with Silky, while also understanding Jon's comments. Fact of the matter: if Banksy isn't up on that wall painting himself, then let's not call it a "BANKSY." If Banksy isn't doing this himself, then how is it any different than me downloading one of his stencils and spray-painting it on a wall myself? Fair point. Although, you could argue that the actual art is the creation of the idea. How it is then transposed becomes irrelevant. If this were a massive Nike advertisement (like the one shown on the colossal media website) is it still a Nike advertisement even thought Phil Knight isn't out there painting it or is it a copy of a Nike advertisement? This is an advertisement for Banksy (as is all of his street work). I see no problem with him commissioning this work to be done. I don't see why anyone should. It in no way lessens the creative value of the art. Ironically, this is a painting of a rat painting itself. Self-recognition is considered the highest form of intelligence. anyone else understand this irony?! By Banksy not painting this piece he references the art and the situation. The whole concept can therefore be considered a Banksy art project.
The paragraph I've marked yellow kind of jumped out at me when I read it.... just thinking aloud here, but the following poorly ordered thoughts were those which immediately sprang to mind:
a) is it some sort of statement on the current Pest Control / Vermin debate? (The large rat being PC, the smaller poor replication of a rat being Vermin)
b) a hint at the fact that not all Banksy street pieces are in fact completed by the hand of Banksy (ergo, why should PC then authenticate them as such)
c) the general widespread nature of fake "goods" (the "I love NY t-shirt" logo probably being one of the most faked/copied/bastardised logos which has ever been thought up)
Extremely intriguing stuff and a great thread Jay; I look forward to seeing some more pics when the gantry has been removed! (Hope all's good by the way - long time no hear! ;D)

Banksy Rat Mural in NYC - New York, by seidbereit on Sept 30, 2008 19:07:39 GMT 1, Great post Seid. Where have you been?
Hi Neil, I was away for a while a few weeks ago but since then I've just been very busy. Been reading some of the threads here every now and again, but haven't posted a lot. A lot of threads I looked at where you'd expect normal discussion (e.g. that vermin statement one) just deteriorated into two-camp slanging matches though - not that it surprised me - so any inclination I may have had with respect to posting soon vanished. Hey-ho.
Have I missed any new developments in your collection? <-- world's stupidest question!
;D

Banksy Rat Mural in NYC - New York, by Deleted on Oct 1, 2008 11:21:49 GMT 1, So when we find out this is not a Banksy (unless I have missed an announcement in which case I apologise) are some people still going to wax lyrical about this piece's subversive and profound message. Or are those people going to collect work by the advertising agency with the same blind passion and religious fervour demonstrated for this.
If however it is by the man himself then I don't agree that it doesn't matter that he didnt paint it either. Warhol's method of 'factory' reproduction were part of the philosophy which underpinned his work. Banksy can't claim this. His work has a personal dialogue with the viewer which is central to the best street work of any artist.
I dont mind people helping with colour fills on large areas, thats been going on forever. Saves valuable time when you're working illegally. BUT the work must be by the artists hand imo.
It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds.
Sorry to ramble but I'm trying to work in between sentences and keep getting caught

Banksy has used artisans to create his work before, such as this piece:
I don't see how the NYC mural is any different. The idea that a contemporary artist post Duchamp has to craft every or any part of his work is archaic in the extreme, you're talking about craft, not art.
