Banksy Links, by punkdaisy on Jun 4, 2006 12:21:00 GMT 1, cart before the horse and all that.. he produced one, plus 6 colourways... in effect one piece of work, probably as both a negative commentary on the commercialisation of art and an ironic/iconic take on Warhols Marilyn..one artist, one great pice of work.
Actually there were 50 and then 6 colourways but of course there was one original from which the prints were made. Banksy produced this one piece, from which commercial prints could be made and sold. We didn't first see this piece on a shoreditch wall as a negative commentary on the commercialisation of art and an ironic/iconic take on Warhols Marilyn.., we saw it in a gallery with a price tag on it. Which of course is exactly why it was produced.
Gallery owners and agents have been sniffing around banksy for years to try an coherse him into making them some cash.. he now has the means to produce what and when and where he likes... in spite of, not because of agents and commercial gallery owners he made Laz and Tom Tom..and I'm sure he doesn't give a flying toss about anything other than bringing his work and voice to an audience.. whether that's a skanky crack head shooting up in a doorway or your good self. It was his independently produced books that allowed him the means to step up a scale. I get the feeling you'd follow this mad capitilist logic for any 'f'lavour of the month' artist which is why you'll probably miss the boat everytime ;D
he didn't produce the canvas cos he wanted to sell it !!! jeez.. suggest you take your eyes away from the price tags and go have another look through his work.
You gotta be kidding me right. Banksy didn't produce 170 Marilyn prints and stick them in a gallery because he didn't want to sell them. He is a street artist who produces canvases and prints precisely to sell them. That's why he has an agent and the pieces end up in galleries with price tags on them. But you were joking weren't you. .. he now has the means to produce what and when and where he likes... in spite of, not because of agents and commercial gallery owners. Lol, he has the means precisely because he has an agent and sold commercial pieces through galleries. Banksy didn't obtain an agent to get his work and voice to an audience, he had the walls for that. He obtained an agent to make him money. To make money he produces commercial art pieces and takes private commissions.

"someone recently asked me if I thought most graf writers were frustrated artists like myself. Well, I'm frustrated by many things but trying to get accepted by the art world isn't one or them. This seems difficult for some people to understand-you do not paint in the vain hope that one day some big fat tory will discover you and put ypur pictures on his walls, if you draw on walls in public you are already operating on a higher level"

Exactly. Talk to any real graf artist and that is where it stops on the walls. That's what it is all about. When you take that art into the commercial sector then the street term is 'sold out'

Just had a though for a new section for the forum.
You know how there's all this fake banksy stuff on ebay, mug's, t's, magnets, stamps etc etc.
It would be good to have a section on real memorabilia like the Turf war glove and postcard, the di faced tenner, kate postcard, crude oils postcards etc etc.
What do you think??

Banksy = Capitalist.
He's probably worth well over a million these days. That's why he makes prints and signs them. He wants to be rich... probably like 95% of the population. Think he did Blur's artwork for free? He's sold thousands of books, commissions etc. for free? Nah - cloud cookoo land me thinks.
He can remain political (I personally don't think he is at all), he can paint walls with or without permission. He can sit on his arse and do nowt for the rest of his life should he want to. He's not a starving artist - he's making a lot of cash by making some great pop art prints and good on him. However, I do think there are people around him wanting their slice too which I'm not happy about, but that's another debate altogether.
For those who buy ever single Banksy released - why? Surely everything isn't great is it? Or is it blind devotion similar to a 15 year old girl and Take That?
Buy what you like, put pins through the corners and blutack on the back - that is a true appreciation of art! Not having a limited edition wanked all over unframed rude copper in a tube collecting dust waiting for the price to rise.... that's just an insult.
OK.... rant over. Back to the pies

Good idea, there were also the promo postcards issued by Century to publicise the Wall and Piece book. Any others?

Surely the sentiment behind the pictures is the same wether you have £1 million in the bank or £1.Just because someone is successful doesn't mean they can't make social comments, does it?

I could be wrong but I did hear that the Polite tape isn't actually a Banksy item, it actually belongs to one of the other artists but is marketed as a Banksy item because it would sell more copies. Don't know how true this is, it could be one of those urban myths, but it is what I heard.

It was designed by Banksy and Chu.
Probably has sold more because banksy's name is asociated with it but not for sales reasons i can't imagine

Totally agreed. However, the population hate being patronised by millionaires.... It's like when bands make it big... one minute they telling us the hardships of the dole queue, two years later it's about their messy divorce and cok problems. The question is, do we care? Er.... nope.

Daniel Silk • The number or Boards and Threads continues to fall as we simplify the layout of the forum.
Daniel Silk • I hear a lot of Artists complaining about Instagram in the past year, how it used to be a good tool for Artists, but it's not good anymore, is that true?
anyaart • For Brett Kern fans, I noticed there is a spinosaurus for sale on E-Bay. It's a limited edition, one of only 60 made. This is the rarest of his dinosaurs. I am not the seller. I already have the same dino purchased in 2016. I've never seen one up for sale
Daniel Silk • Apology • Sorry I have been offline this past few weeks, due to a very bad Fever. I'm slowly getting better, step by step, and catching up with things here on the forum on the days I'm well enough. Thank you for your understanding.
Boy Wonder • I read that they were more or less nicked the same day they went up. Loads of fakes exist.
milou2 • Would love to see any photos of Banksy's first exhibition at the Severnshed in Bristol (2000). Who was there?*
jirr • Hi all, over here in the states. Pandemic put me out of business, need to sell this asap. Please send offers thanks so much
matgab • Steven Harrington - Gotcha first ed for sale.
1nkling • I can't help but think that a more reasonable tier for people who just want to support the work you guys do would raise more income. Then other tiers for those that want specialist benefits.
1nkling • As soon as I saw the heading for the email I thought 'Oh yeah, I use that place a lot. I'd happily support it'. Not at £40 a month though. I have a paid sub for a Formula 1 site I use that is very active. They have a high uptake on subs at £12 a year.
1nkling • Pricing on the new supporters sub seems a bit poorly thought out. £40 a month to have a pinned sale thread being the only listed benefit?
Daniel Silk • The forum now has more than half the number of Boards than it had a year ago! As we work towards simplifying the layout.
