A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by leehambly on Dec 16, 2007 18:12:41 GMT 1, I don't hunt either but as I said before, I'm not judgmental against those that do. It would be ignorant for me to do so simply because I don't hunt.
That don't work Ray.. I don't steal, rape, pillage or murder... doesnt mean I cant condemn them all though.

This is something I have pondered before... I know some extremely chilled out guys who are eco-friendly to the max and wouldnt harm a fly otherwise, but you show them a pciture of some gun and they can go into great detail about this, that and other... and they can think of nothing better than blowing the shit out of things... puzzles the ass off me, just don't get it at all.

Hunting's legal. To put hunting in the same category as rape, stealing pillaging and murder is carrying it waaaay (way way) to far.

i'm not... merely highlighting that just because you dont do something doesnt mean you cant comment on it.
I don't bungee jump, doesnt mean I don't think its daftly risky and wildly uncommensurate thing to do. I don't own a pitbull, doesnt mean I don't think those that own one are desperately trying to compensate for something they feel they are sadly lacking...
... neither are illegal, you are allowed an opinion... hiding behind it with the reason you gave just doesnt work, the example I gave was an extreme but it does translate.

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by ray on Dec 16, 2007 19:24:35 GMT 1, I'm wondering why people that are anti gun continue to put words in the mouth of people that own guns. To me that's fascinating. leumasdarnley was very clear in an earlier post that he owned rifles to target shoot with. His was then accused of hunting animals with automatic weapons. Seems to be happening quite a bit on this thread. Can you explain it?
I guess my question is why are you so afraid of me owning a gun? To me and most of the people I know it's not a big deal but seems to be a huge deal to you.
It's fine to disagree and have your own beliefs about things but why insist everyone does as you do or believes what you believe? I've never said everyone should own guns, just that I own them and have a right to. Why push your beliefs on people that legally enjoy target shooting or have a gun in their home?
Why are you so afraid? Have you had a bad experience with guns or been held up at gunpoint?

I never said you couldn't have an opinion. It's when words get put into peoples mouths (see above) or insults start flying I have an issue with.

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by leehambly on Dec 16, 2007 19:42:51 GMT 1, they are, inherently, tools of death... target practice is practising for what? Personally I just dont see the point in practising something you arent ever going to do.
I never want to hold a gun, again, I have held them and fired them in the past, just not something I am interested in and cannot understand why anyone else would be either, even the Police and Military shouldnt WANT to, it is an unfortunate and sometimes necessary part of the job though.
That said I do understand that some people view this differently, what I find peculiar though about all this is the, to me, contrary position of likings guns and Banksy... don't get me wrong, I don't think they are complete opposites: I just don't see the pair sitting together very well... I am happy to learn that I have "gotten" the wrong end of the stick about Banksy though, as I mentioned about some of the friends I have are very chilled out, "into guns" and Banksy, I just find it really quite puzzling.

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by ray on Dec 16, 2007 19:59:52 GMT 1, This is no longer a gun issue it's an intolerance issue.. Can only Atheists belong to this board or is it ok if someone Catholic? Jewish? Muslim?
Is a racially mixed marriage ok? Abortion? White or Wheat bread?
Should we hunt down people that own Banksy's and give them a questionnaire to fill out to make sure they are not a gun owners or Catholics? Hunters or Protestants? Feel free to add to the list as I have a feeling it's going to be a long one. People that show intolerance usually have a list.
Maybe someone should post a questionnaire on the home page of "acceptable" life choices before letting people in, that should narrow it down and ensure everyone thinks the "right" way.
It's not a gun issue. It's a hate issue.

Now you are talkin bollocks... merely because I find it puzzling doesnt mean I don't think you have a place here... I'm not right about everything... why not take the opportunity I have given many times to explain why you enjoy shooting shit up? Rather than repeating i enjoy shooting shit up and like guns.
I have put forward why I think this concept is counterpoint with the main content of this site.

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by leehambly on Dec 16, 2007 20:18:00 GMT 1, You know, while making me tea a minute ago, I was thinking about the friends I have who enjoy shooting shit up and that got me thinking about the grand-daddy of modern culture: William Burroughs... and specifically about how he (tragically, albeit) loved guns, likewise another great: Hunter S Thompson... now, fair play, not exactly people to live your life by, but no doubt both would appear in the "Thanks to..." section of most counter-culture exponents, of which Banksy is surely one... so maybe you are right, maybe my hatred of guns is counterpoint, maybe its a power thing... I dunno... at the very same time, it is difficult to draw conclusions from the writings of two of people who have taken around 50% of all the narcotics produced between 1940 and 1980.

Shooting shit up? Who said I go around "shooting shit up?" I didn't say it. I said I enjoy going into the desert for target shooting. I shoot targets, I don't "shoot shit up".
And who put the words into my mouth that I'm "fascinated" by guns? I'm not "fascinated" with them I own them.
Go back thru my posts. how many times have a mentioned the actual guns? I talk about my right to own them. What I've said time and time again is that it's not a big deal to me as with most owners.
Why the hate?

theres no hate with me, I just want an insight.
Sorry, but "shooting targets", to me, is the same as "shooting shit up"... what is it? Bottles? Tin cans? Paper targets? Some shit or other... hopefully nothing of value anyway! Its only semantics (i s'pose if you shoot flags then it would be semiotics!), get over it... going into the desert, woods or anywhere else and shooting targets can, I feel, be very legitimately labelled as shooting shit up.
"Fascinated" isnt my word... I said "like guns".
If you don't want to engage on it then fair play... all I have said is I think it is counterpoint to the main site content and I am puzzled by it.. it isnt a new source of puzzlement at all, I have had it before, as I said. If you don't want to expand on the reason behind why you do, then you cannot really blame anyone else for not understanding. I feel what I have said is coherent.
My comments about religious people was said as a further example as a highlight: I can only assume that most people on here are atheist or disillusioned with organised religion due to much of the imagery... if there is a religious person here, this doesnt mean I hate them, just puzzled by it... the two don't reconcile well, imo. I would pose the same question.

Democracy is fatally, intrinsically flawed... there is no "get out" option...
I'm not aware that huge swathes of the UK population was denied an opportunity to vote or to have their vote count in the democratic process, a process which as I say is flawed anyway, but that is the system we have.
There was a minor issue with some of the votes, in the Scottish Parliamentary Election earlier this year, due to a mecanism fault in the electronic counting of the votes, however I believe this was remedied manually.

First of all there is a difference between "shooting shit up" and target shooting. It's a skill somewhat like basketball, trying to hit the target. There are competitions and yes, it's even an Olympic sport.
The interpretation (not all by you) has somehow equated this with killing animals with machine guns, belonging to the NRA and the pro-gun lobby, being a redneck, all Americans are idiots, and a multitude of other off the wall comments.
It's a target. A piece of paper mounted on a board. Just curious, do own any art with guns on them?

I said before... lots of things are "sports", again frankly this is only semantics, Olympic or not... but whatever floats your boat. I throw frisbees, amongst other things.
Yes, I own Big Spongefinger by Jamie Hewlett..? Added: I also have some pages from 2000AD (Judge Dredd) which I believe show the odd gun here and there.
Not sure if it is inferred or implied (one or the other), but I think I can assume that if you decide to do something in your own time with your friends then usually it is something you enjoy. First of all there is a difference between "shooting s**t up" and target shooting. A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by pezlow on Dec 16, 2007 21:26:50 GMT 1, Just for the record I don't think that all americans are idiots. I have a number of american family members and friends etc. But I do find this idea that you have a right to own a gun just a little bit bizarre.
I'm not saying that the uk is perfect but we banned all forms of firearms in private ownership some time ago save for a number of very limited types of firearms such as shotguns. The controls to get those are pretty onerous. I'm not saying it has made a huge difference to gun crime but I am convinced it has made some.
Nowadays there are plenty of other options if you want to target shoot. I gather the laser devices are just as accurate and enjoyable, although it is not something that floats my boat.
I don't believe that it is ignorant to think that the private ownership of guns is incapable of justification but if you would like to explain why you think it is ignorant Leumas I am prepared to listen.

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by leumasdarnley on Dec 16, 2007 22:59:41 GMT 1, I'm not going to go on and on about this because politics get too personal but I will backup my statement.
Gun ownership in the United States is as much of a cultural situation as it is political and written in the 2nd Amendment (which I am not going to argue). So making a statment about gun ownership is your opinion but when you label it as "symptomatic of everything that is wrong in american society" you are making a closed minded statements which I felt was ignorant.
Your leaving out cultural differnces between the UK and the States and anytime someone makes an all encompasing statement about a culture they don't understand then say it is "incapable of justification" is making these statements in ignorance hence its definition.
ignorance (ĭg'nər-əns) pronunciation n. The condition of being uneducated, unaware, or uninformed.
Thats it I am not going to go on and on about this I don't care that much about guns to argue it. But like I said Pez you always make insightful comments just took this last one a little personal.
Cheers -L

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by pezlow on Dec 16, 2007 23:09:51 GMT 1, Ok lets not get in to an argument. I understand and aware and am informed about the issues surrounding gun ownership in the US. I can assure you I am not therefore ignorant of these issues.

Thanks Pez. It all comes down to a country's culture. I understand you thinking it's bizarre for us to be able to own guns. I think it's bizarre that in your country you can't. I certainly wouldn't tell you it's wrong, it's what was decided for you and if it works more power to ya.
I can't even imagine my government telling us we can't own a gun and no person running for President would ever get elected with that on their platform. Even many non gun owners would see it as an infringement of our rights and would step up.
As far as safety it's all about perception. I just read an article by the BBC that said gun crime rose 40% in the 2 years after your law was enacted. Does that mean it's a bad law? Not if that's what the people wanted.
If you want to educate yourself a little on gun "facts" as opposed to feelings then you might spend a few minutes and read this (below is the link). I just found it and I was surprised myself at some of the things on there. It also discusses some gun facts in the UK.

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by mike hunt on Dec 16, 2007 23:28:49 GMT 1, I don't have a view on this but here's my story - I'm from the UK and this happened in the UK. I got held hostage at gunpoint in my home, by someone who was very agitated, threatened to kill me and went on to kill his other victims. However, I enjoy archery and rifle shooting (at targets in a proper, controlled environment i.e. a shooting range). I don't feel the two are related. One is a sport/game testing hand eye coordination/accuracy and the other is a tool to exercise fear and power over another human being.
I feel that the US gun laws is a different subject because it is cultural, and their culture is quite different - it is my understanding that gun possession is a constitutional right in order to overthrow a potentially tyrannical government and keep power with the people. In the UK there is a lot of bad feeling towards the US (despite our consumption of US products and culture) and always has been since the 2nd world war when British troops were poor and the yanks came over with their smart expensive uniforms, gum, money, stealing our women folk etc. I used to go to the states every year, but still don't hold a view on gun laws there, as it isn't my culture and I am willing to admit I don't fully understand. Like I said, I think it is a different subject to shooting, archery etc as a sport in a controlled environment. There are also places in the UK where people shoot birds to eat them for dinner. Don't know where that fits in to this.

Thank you for your well thought out and insightful addition to the discussion. I'm sure you have fascinating opinions on many issues facing the world today. Please feel free to share them as I'm infinitely smarter now than I was before your post.
