A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by uvme on Dec 16, 2007 23:45:25 GMT 1, Anyone who has gone out to buy a gun so they can shoot stuff in the desert is a big c*ck. No matter which country they live in or under which laws they are governed. Thank you for your well thought out and insightful addition to the discussion. I'm sure you have fascinating opinions on many issues facing the world today. Please feel free to share them as I'm infinitely smarter now than I was before your post.
Nice one! Gun ownership is repulsive and is totally indefensible. I bet your gun looks great mounted on your wall next to your Banksy prints. You must have a great sense of irony like the majority of your countrymen. Keep us posted on what you shoot!

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by paulypaul on Dec 16, 2007 23:58:26 GMT 1, This thread is becoming a nonsense. Ray's government and society allow him the choice to own a gun. He exercises that right and many of his countrymen choose not to exercise that right. It's a choice to own a gun. If he shoots someone with that gun it's an entirely different situation
I choose to drink. My society allows me that choice. If I drink and then drive a car that is an entirley different situation.
Point is - cars and guns don't kill people - dickheads kill people...

Thank you again. I'm guessing your a diplomat of some sort? With your obvious skills of diplomacy and your ability to represent your country in such an elegant manner....It would be a shame if you missed your calling.

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by mike hunt on Dec 17, 2007 0:06:24 GMT 1, IMO Banksy talks more about the people using guns to exercise power over other people rather than guns themselves. Sometimes he subverts this idea, like in CND soldiers, but for me power is a big theme of his, with or without guns. In the words of Wales finest poets, (Goldie Looking Chain) 'Guns don't kill people, rappers do!'

I'm guessing you're a redneck who has no concept of how his individual actions and choices reflect and influence society as a whole? Do you think the artists discussed on this board include guns in their images because they look cool? I'm sure the reasons behind SG being held in Bethlehem are lost on you. Making out that owning guns is ok when a large proportion of the world lives in fear of them on a daily basis makes you an idiot. Try Guns and Ammo forum.

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by ray on Dec 17, 2007 0:17:50 GMT 1, I don't have a view on this but here's my story - I'm from the UK and this happened in the UK. I got held hostage at gunpoint in my home, by someone who was very agitated, threatened to kill me and went on to kill his other victims. However, I enjoy archery and rifle shooting (at targets in a proper, controlled environment i.e. a shooting range). I don't feel the two are related. One is a sport/game testing hand eye coordination/accuracy and the other is a tool to exercise fear and power over another human being. I feel that the US gun laws is a different subject because it is cultural, and their culture is quite different - it is my understanding that gun possession is a constitutional right in order to overthrow a potentially tyrannical government and keep power with the people. In the UK there is a lot of bad feeling towards the US (despite our consumption of US products and culture) and always has been since the 2nd world war when British troops were poor and the yanks came over with their smart expensive uniforms, gum, money, stealing our women folk etc. I used to go to the states every year, but still don't hold a view on gun laws there, as it isn't my culture and I am willing to admit I don't fully understand. Like I said, I think it is a different subject to shooting, archery etc as a sport in a controlled environment. There are also places in the UK where people shoot birds to eat them for dinner. Don't know where that fits in to this.
Stop it, you're making sense.

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by leehambly on Dec 17, 2007 0:36:53 GMT 1, I said before... lots of things are "sports", again frankly this is only semantics, Olympic or not... but whatever floats your boat. I throw frisbees, amongst other things. Yes, I own Big Spongefinger by Jamie Hewlett..? Added: I also have some pages from 2000AD (Judge Dredd) which I believe show the odd gun here and there. You have a gun on your wall...Why are you so fascinated with guns?
I was willing to post this as I was curious where you would take... so, this print is a reflection of fascination in guns? Really..? have another look.
You appear to say this in a tit-for-tat manner... when have I said you are fascinated in guns? I'm sorry but if you enjoy going off into the desert, shooting s**t up (or targets in your language, this is only semantics) with your mates then I think it is fairly safe to assume you "like guns" (this is the most amorous a connection I have alluded to, go and have a look) and enjoy the activity. Am I right?
Why do you have a problem with this? Its you that does it, ffs, not me... I couldnt give a flying whatsit what you do so long as no one is harmed.
None of this goes towards answering the question... what is it that gets you off about shooting? If you don't want to answer then fine, don't, but I am actually interested in what it is and how this reconciles with the main content on this site.

All this loving from the awards thread and infighting from the guns thread is creating too many conflicting emotions in my head... arrrgghh!

Lee, I keep answering your question and you keep asking it over and over. Go back a bit and see where I answered you.
I was joking about the gun print on your wall hence the It's your house and your art and far be it from me to make comment about it. I think it looks great.

All you've said is "its sport" and it involves hitting a target... I just don't get it and you don't seem to want to expand on why you do. I take it I'll have to ask someone else then.

Yes, that's best. I think you're looking for some dark hidden meaning in all this and quite simply there isn't one. I enjoy shooting at targets. I enjoy owning guns.
Would you mind if I asked if you played organized sports as a kid? I'm trying to understand why you're having difficulty understanding what it's like to be involved in a sport or competition.

I represented my school in Rugby Union (as a hooker and prop) from the age of 9 to 19, when I hit Uni my size was simply uncompetitive at the level I wanted to play, so stopped. I ran 400m and 800m (and often the third leg in the 4x100m) for my school, including national trials one year up to the age of 16. Represented my school from 15 to 19 in field hockey (inside right), and at Uni and for the local town team until about 23. Outside of school, practiced both judo and tae-kwon-do for fitness from time to time from 9 to early twenties.
Tore my right hamstring badly and have only been involved from a fitness perspective since then.
I am horribly competitive in everything I do, believe me. Now, I don't compete in any organised team sports but throw an extremely mean frisbee (anyone, anyone, anyone? always on the look out for a quick fling!) and juggle for fitness, concentration and relaxation.
I actually took a rifle shooting session or two in the school range when I was about 10 or 11... didnt really get it, putting a little hole in a little piece of paper just doesnt appeal.
The first 4 or 5 pages of this has been interesting but has descended into a bit of a bunfight, which is a bit of a shame. I do ge the sport side of hitting a target with an object, however I really object to guns and just don't think they should have anything to do with sport in any way, shape or form... I don't care if the Olympics are involved, they are hardly a paragon of anything, or indeed ever were... it is a fun two weeks of telly in the night though, beats the vapid quiz shows we get in the UK at the moment.
And seriously, I really am interested in how you reconcile gun ownership with the art discussed here... I have read a multitude of "different cultures" and frankly that doesnt really cut it... a life is a life, US or UK.

A Rare Banksy Mistake?, by ray on Dec 17, 2007 2:42:59 GMT 1, I honestly don't understand people that have no respect for a persons culture/differences. I can't imagine what it's like when you travel. Are you just blinded to it or just stuck in the "My way is the right way" stage of life?
Good luck on your search for your version of the truth about why people shoot targets and own guns (by golly there must be more to it then him just enjoying it). If you ever come to the US just a heads up, we drive on the right. That's a cultural difference that you shouldn't (can't) ignore. ;D
Over and out.
