Makes sense, they also all played for the Lakers I believe... except for Banksy of course, that would just be tomfoolery.

Mr Brainwash Show ICONS New York 2010, by boaty on Feb 15, 2010 6:38:07 GMT 1, I'm really confused by this guys work. Is it for real? Or is this just a big prank by Banksy? I know this has been discussed before but I have yet to get any real clarity on it. I just don't get it. Even the Wall Street Journal is reporting on this: "The street artist, friend and film cohort of graffiti artist Banksy is a master of enigma" ""Maybe I am Banksy," says the enigmatic artist, who says his real name is Thierry Guetta and speaks in a thick French accent. "Maybe not." " online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704140104575057350802155846.html?mod=WSJ_LifeStyle_Lifestyle_5Whatever we may think of his work, he sure is a successful entertainer. I may swing by the show today to see what this hype is all about.
Ok, I did my self-imposed objective forum duty and went to the opening in NY on Sundayโฆand I return to you still a diehard Banksy and art fan - and now also brainwashed by MBW!
I never owned any of MBW's work before today - and I've never waited on line for something like this (or much else - impatient New Yorker that I am). But after today, I simply love this guy (and I don't love easily)!
The show presentation and layout is nothing short of brilliant (the location wasn't bad either). MBW's enthusiasm and interaction with his fan base and the press was unreal and highly energetic. Folks were lined up from 5am - the line went for blocks by 3pm (supposed to be start of show - but we didn't start getting in until maybe 3:45pm). MBW worked the line from at least 12pm โ generously shaking hands and taking pictures w/ fans - while he was still preparing the show layout and hand finishing prints (for free giveaways) in plain view; making the show seemly start from when you were on the line (makes the time go by faster: but never fast enough). Then he signed each print as your number was called. Nothing lazy about this guy while working a show!
Ok - as for the art work - let's be clear: I gathered MBW is in the business of art. Some unique pieces as well as many objects or styles we are familiar with - Warhol 3.0. But I perceive he uses a lot of faculties (resources, marketing skills, artistic abilities, connections and mostly his innate personality) to create a winning formula. There are many, like Joshua Budich, who currently produces some great historic celebrity prints (which always sellout fast); I have a few and love them. But MBW has celebrity rock star qualities about him - he is a real entertainer - he really should do a reality show or something! (It's like, we all have ideas of what are the best government policies - but could we all be successful politicians or government officials - maybe not as we simply may not get voted in โ the likeability factor simply matters). Prices on the originals were too high for many of us and many pieces already taken. Of interest on here, there were a few varying canvases of the movie gorilla face image (priced approx 21k and sold โ low end of the spectrum). Start securing those movie posters over there!
I jumped ship when the firetrucks rolled up, given crowd control concerns. Let's just say there were more folks there on opening day waiting for free prints than checking out the displays (not bad - liken it to art welfare: artist assistance program for those who can't afford prints or originals when the ship has sailed - I guess all the premier artists do it in some form or the other, including Banksy - and thank goodness for that).
All in all I walked away with an experience: met some nice folks on line, 2 cool free prints (numbered w/ my place in line out of 300), a show poster and a deck of about 30 great postcards, and yep, I shaked MBWs hand at least 4x.
Ok, while Iโve had my fair share of MBW koolaid for the weekend โ I am off the fence and will not hate on MBW in the slightest - hope he continues to do his thing and continues to have great success โ and I do think there is definite investment value there.
My two dollars worth!
Oh โ and just to get under a few skins (friends included for fun): when MBW popped his head out at one point around 3pm โ there were a few people on line screaming โJesus, Jesusโ ;D Good marketing, you think; or genuine fan base? I love it!

Mr Brainwash Show ICONS New York 2010, by keysersoze on Feb 15, 2010 7:54:04 GMT 1, All kidding aside - are you people retarded?
This is a perfect embodiment of a wolf in sheep's clothing. Mr. Brainwash's work is laughably terrible!!! Part of me wishes Banksy or Mr. Thierry Guetta came out and said this was a big hoax / ruse to show the ridiculousness of the art world.
Unfortunately this won't happen because we have a wannabe film-maker, who is a wealthy LA property owner, who is related to a street artist and thus had behind-the-scene access to the scene - decide he's going to have a go at being a street/urban artist. And the crazy thing is - it kinda worked.
If you are a person buying one of his originals - I truly am embarrassed for you and if your 'art' (and I use that term beyond lightly) piece is worth anything in a few years time - I will eat my hat. For those people who lined up for a free Mr. Brainwash print I really wish to never see your art collections.
What Mr. Brainwash proves to us is that if you have enough money/backing, produce something derivative enough to appeal to the layman, and put a massive PR/Marketing machine at work - you can manipulate the public.
Please recall what Banksy actually said... "Mr. Brainwash is a force of natureโฆ and I don't mean that in a good way."

Not a huge MBW fan but this quote sums it up for me. He probably is a good bloke in the same way Robbie Williams is probably a good bloke.
Robbie Williams has good people around him: co-writers and video makers and he can present the music in way that doesn't offend and the mainstream likes (many parallels to MBW). For middle of the road people, they will think he is edgy and funny. Ultimately Robbie Williams is the equivalent of Bruce Forsyth, not a musician or artist but just an entertainer and IMO MBW is just an entertainer. But in 2010, people like this can fool the public into thinking they have talent, as the media always get behind anything making lots of money that isn't too offensive.
I prefer artists who have more in common with the Sex Pistols, Public Enemy or the Arctic Monkeys than Britney Spears.
But there is a place for MBW, but just not in my home.

Mr Brainwash Show ICONS New York 2010, by Gentle Mental on Feb 15, 2010 19:24:58 GMT 1, i think MBW is doing more harm than good. he, with his Marketing and PR teams and Internet people (you know who you are), are a greedy, manipulative and destructive force.
by selling street art as nothing but hot air and hype, and associating himself and his weak weak work with Banksy and Shep so closely on CNN, WSJ, he is dragging the entire scene through mud for his personal gain and fame.
once exposed, as hacks eventually do, he would've dealt a terrible blow to the integrity this very fragile scene worked so hard, for so long, to earned.
this is just so wrong. i hope for everyone's sake, he is a quick, forgettable fad.

Mr Brainwash Show ICONS New York 2010, by mutant on Feb 17, 2010 16:53:58 GMT 1, I don't want to resurrect the debate on Mr. Brainwash. But after reading this interview, I believe this guy is nothing but a HACK:
www.artinfo.com/news/story/33921/brainwashed/
Here are some exerpts from the interview:
"The exhibition spills across the two floors of the warehouse-like gallery. One whole wall is devoted to prints of Kate Moss, which have been splashed lightly with neon paint. They are near-identical copies of Andy Warhol's silkscreens, but Guetta acts offended at that suggestion. โAndy Warhol didnโt do a portrait of Kate Moss!โ he said. โIf I wait until Andy Warhol does it, Iโm never going to see it. Just because Andy Warhol painted portraits, does that mean I canโt do it?โ
"Guetta does not hide the fact that most of his work is fabricated by his assistants, with his role limited to occasionally doing quality-control touchups, for instance adding an extra bit of vinyl for a Kiss member's eye. However, he declines to go into detail about his operation. โI donโt want to explain it," Guetta says. "Itโs like cooking. If you go to a famous chef, he might let you taste his famous sauce, but he will not tell you how he made it.โ
"Mr. Brainwash represents, in a sense, an art criticโs worst nightmare: a complete leveling of culture, with every exhibition celebrated with a round of cheap applause and a fresh infusion of cash โ the more derivative the work, the better. His art embodies the old fear that Duchampโs readymade will be read not an aesthetic challenge โ to make meaningful art when all things are suddenly allowed โ but a license for complete triviality: it's art because someone says it is, and it's all equally wonderful.
These are not concerns for Mr. Brainwash, though. โArt is not something difficult to do,โ he explained nonchalantly, when asked why he did his work. โYou just need to pick up a brush and do it.โ

So is Guy Hepner responsible for his success? I was at first intrigued by his gallery but can't take it seriously anymore-for a number of reasons. Who is this Guy anyway? He must come from serious money.
