Signed KAWS books for sale, by Happy Shopper on Sept 2, 2010 11:13:32 GMT 1, I'm surprised they made this available on the online store. Would have thought emails or in-person sales would have been the way to go at a museum. I ordered a few months ago, and have had a few emails from them, so fingers (and eyes) crossed! X X

I am refusing to buy in to all this book hype - with the exception of Mario Testino's Kate Moss book - the rest is just opportunism to tap in those who missed out on previous releases or buy in to the hype of the artist.

agree with you there walshy, I don't think there is anything like a book hype going on, nor the kaws, nor in general. Art and books are going hand in hand. Just because a book is a very usefull medium to give an overview of artists work for a broad public. I love these books, especially when they are signed or have another special touch!

Signed KAWS books for sale, by Deleted on Sept 2, 2010 12:34:34 GMT 1, Of course there is a book hype
How many books do Faile or Fairey/Obey need to bring out in order to show the broad public their tat? Why does there need to be some sort of elitism with a book launch - 50 studio editions, followed by 250 signed editions and the rest which are unsigned are for the pleps. Why not just release 1500 signed and that's the end of it. It all feeds in to the frenzy of the hype imo
Once the book is on my shelf i dont give a fuck if it is signed or not - its not art, its not going to get framed, its a reference point or nicely packaged catalogue.

Signed KAWS books for sale, by Happy Shopper on Sept 2, 2010 12:41:03 GMT 1, I think Kaws is the least hyped major Street Artist on this board... mostly because he makes vinyl figures rather than prints, but also because his work is a bit strange and difficult to "get". A lot of his releases are unsigned too, which keeps them cheaper, but less attractive to collect in some ways.

I really think you are exaggerating. Obey produces a lot, in prints, clothing, and yes, also some books (not even that much).
how many books did faile produce? I agree that there is a lot of shit going on with all these editions, but why should that bother you? Go for the one you want, or don't.
Don't know enough about kaws to say anything about that, but it sounds at least that he has an information problem.
I love the books Elms lesters produce, they are all quality. The books for the show, and especially their 'big book'. A signed book (+ a little doodle) feels more personal to me than a book that is wrapped in plastic when it arrives.
Books can help to 'study' the work of the artists you admire. I just don't have the time and money to visit all shows (not UK or US based) and these books help me out. A lot better than watching pictures on my laptop.

Unbelievable โ you ripped me to shreds last month for pissing on your parade when I so harshly suggested the Testino book wasn't "exactly a bargain." Tough words I know. Sorry
But look at you now. Jeezus man.

I agree there is a lot of hype around Kaws. Although very oddly it isn't found on this forum. But Kaws hardly ever signs any thing he puts out anymore so I think being able to get a signed book for $50 has a lot of people excited. Sounds like a free for all with the ordering system. I ordered one last week online but I feel like my chances are still 50/50 now that I hear there was already a list in the museum store (fair enough) But taking orders from people via email before posting it on the store bugs me. I guess it pays to bombard these places with emails to scope out for these things.
I PM'd a few people about it when I saw it, most of whom already knew. I didn't bother posting it publicly to save Lise the hassle of sending several thousand condolence emails to people that miss out. But oh well. Sounds like she's asking for it with this process.
I have some hope though that maybe they'll sign a few more than 250 once they start getting going. That is if they have more than 250 books on order.
And based on what she told me, I highly doubt they're going to send anyone an unsigned book. But she wouldn't give me any clue to how many had already been ordered.

Its been advertised for sale on that site for the last 2 months, was and still is posted in the kaws exhibition section. I guess at least then, the people who show an interest actually find it... rather than just going to a site to check out the shop.
Thats the only logic I can see

Signed KAWS books for sale, by maadbeats on Sept 2, 2010 15:54:53 GMT 1, Sounds like they are going to have to honor the signed book as advertised on the website. If not they need to take down the signed advertisment immediately and start emailing everyone that purchased after the 250. Sounds a bit deceiving to push book sales. I am looking forward to this especially being signed. I Only have a couple piece by him that are signed. Been following Kaws since 2000 and collecting since early 2003

Signed KAWS books for sale, by maadbeats on Sept 2, 2010 16:07:36 GMT 1, I did as well. But that signed description should be taken down immediately after the 250 number has been met. Then I find it deceptive. Making people believe that they MIGHT received a signed copy. You disagree?
EDIT: I only use the word deceptive, because it seemed like if you didnt get a signed copy you will receive a normal copy. Which in turn boosts the book sales. Now if you just get a refund. I have no problem. We will see how this shakes out in November

Signed KAWS books for sale, by snausages on Sept 2, 2010 16:17:55 GMT 1, I've checked out the exhibition page walshy, I'm not obsessive about it though and didn't notice the signed monographs until last week when I was looking up the show catalog. I doubt they had any forethought about posting it on the exhibition page so 'true fans' would find it first probably just inefficiency.

Signed KAWS books for sale, by mmmike on Sept 2, 2010 16:41:39 GMT 1, I think all of this is a case of bad planning on the part of the shop / museum or whoever. I don't think they had any clue of the demand or have ever had a product where demand was greater than supply.
I think the intent was probably good but the execution not so good.
I don't think I'll end up getting one unless maybe if they loose a couple hundred of the original orders but that is life.
Good luck to all but if like me you just ordered in the last few days, don't hold your breath.

Signed KAWS books for sale, by lifeonwalls on Sept 2, 2010 17:54:17 GMT 1, Now, according to a member on the KR forum:
"Just spoke to the Aldrich store manager. She confirmed that the 250 signed copy orders list has not yet reached capacity and that when it is full the link will be taken down from their store. I inquired about the sign up sheet at the museum and she stated that unless credit card #'s were given those on the list don't have an order placed.....if they just left their contact info (which most did) they would be called when the books are in stock, if any were left after processing credit card orders first. She assured me if we have order #'s from the website we are going to get the signed edition. I also asked about our international boardies email requests and she said they would be processes as well."

We will not charge your credit card if we cannot fulfill your order. You will receive an email from me sometime in November if we are unable to fulfill your order.
Best, Lise
I'm done with all of this speculating, lord knows at this point what's going on. All I know is that I have order #166x.
Guess we'll have to wait, good luck everyone.
