NICK WALKER - Works Up For Mercy Appeal, by Harveyn on Jul 7, 2008 21:10:59 GMT 1, ARTC*NT Mercy Centre Appeal
Okay folks here is the deal.
As I am sure you are all aware by now it appears that some money that was owed to “The Mercy Centre Foundation” does not look like its going to make it there.
A significant number of members contacted me with regards to setting up some sort of appeal to raise some funds for this fantastic cause.
Ged (Paper Windows) an artist on the forum came up with an idea that I think would be a great way to raise some serious cash for this appeal and through the early hours last night and this morning we have develop this concept into the following format.
Before I get started I would also like to thank Chris (Beejoir) for his words that have proved to be the inspiration and catalyst for this appeal (www.artc**t.com).
Ged (Paper Windows) will supply 3 x A3 art pads on which he will stencil on the front cover to include the name of this appeal and the charity that will benefit.
Now to the tricky bit.
I will be approaching artists to produce one or two pieces to help raise funds for this appeal. We are looking to get 18 artists names and hopefully some of the big names from the Street Art seen will agree to get involved. I will be contacting artists, galleries and forum members I have dealt with over the years to enlist their help.
The appeal will run for 9 weeks. The first 2 weeks will be to co-ordinate the list of artists and produce 3 groups of 6 artists. The next 6 weeks will involve Ged sending the 3 A3 pads to the first 3 artists listed. Each artist will then be given 1 week to produce one or two pieces which will remain in the art pad. They will then be instructed by myself whom to pass the art pad onto next. This process will be repeated until all 18 artists have completed one or two pieces each and we have 3 art pads of with between 6 and 12 pieces of art in each.
The last week will be used to sell, raffle or auction (details to follow) the 3 art pads as a set of works.
To maintain and stimulate people’s interest during the course of the first 8 weeks I will get each artist to send me images of piece(s) as they complete them and I will post them on the forum.

NICK WALKER - Works Up For Mercy Appeal, by loucastel on Jul 7, 2008 21:30:30 GMT 1, Fantastic concept, fantastic cause, the only reservation I have ,and it is purely my humble opinion, that the art pads are too big, if they are going to be sold off as a complete pad, you will have between 6-12 works which will never all be framed, perhaps the odd one or two, the rest will be shoved in a portfolio, never again to see the light of day, I personally would prefer the art pads to be smaller, thus allowing the winner to be able to frame (if they wished) all the works in one frame, thereby able to have them all on the wall, just my thoughts, good luck with this, I will be attempting to buy.

NICK WALKER - Works Up For Mercy Appeal, by Heavyconsumer on Jul 8, 2008 6:02:43 GMT 1, Great work Neil! Well done mate, some smashing artists on your list already.
I humbly suggest that Felix is on to something. It would seem a shame to sell all the pieces to only 3 buyers. Perhaps one of the pads could be raffled off per piece/entry. That way there would be much better odds of peasants (like me) winning a piece. Also is there any possibility of arranging multiple payment options rather than only Paypal? Perhaps Chris would set up a Google checkout account as an option, I know SOS already use it instead of Paypal.

NICK WALKER - Works Up For Mercy Appeal, by rosstierney on Jul 8, 2008 13:29:48 GMT 1, i understand what felix is saying but doesn't that blow the whole concept out of the water?
you might as well just get the artists to create an individual piece & send it direct to harveyn
i think the original idea is brilliant & makes a change from the norm
you could display the pad in an easily accessible perspex box & turn the pages accordingly dependant on your mood

Thanks for all the comments and suggestion both Ged and myself will get back to everyone soon but in the interim we are concentrating on getting the sketch pads sorted and the logistics of who does what when mapped out.

Yes Ross, I see your point, my thinking was that if 2 pads were auctioned off to the highest bidders they would raise a tidy sum. By splitting up and raffling off (individually) the remaining 1 pad's pages/inserts, it accomplishes a couple of things: Firstly the raffle theme allows ALL forum members a chance to pick something up and contribute to the cause (not only those with big bucks) and also, by splitting the pieces up, it increases people's chances to win something and could result in increased ticket sales. There is one additional perk to the 2 auction winners also, which is that they know they are the only 2 with a full pad of one-off works from this and no-one will pick up a similar item for a tenner! Just a line of thought, but maybe you're right and it's not the way to go.
I thought it was an idea worthy of consideration, that's all.

NICK WALKER - Works Up For Mercy Appeal, by themightyreds on Jul 9, 2008 11:15:41 GMT 1, Neil & Ged. This is a great way of helping the peolpe at the Mercy centre, and very well done to you both for taking on the challenge of arranging it all!! I will be following this closely and hopefully i'll be able to bid as well. Will the auctions be blind, or will the pads be listed with the artists contained within? & to throw another artists name into the hat for contributing, hows about Oliver Shaw?

NICK WALKER - Works Up For Mercy Appeal, by ruat caelum on Jul 9, 2008 20:13:39 GMT 1, Harveyn,
Whilst I have no doubt about the noble intentions of this Mercy Centre appeal, is it not premature to take this project on whilst the disastrous fallout of the last forum-backed charity appeal is still ongoing?
I not aware of all the facts, but it seems that you already have your hands full with the verbalkint debacle. Although it is more of a thankless task, perhaps sorting out that mess should be your first and main priority, rather than possibly over-stretching yourself by taking on a new charity appeal for the Mercy Centre (which I would allow another person to deal with in your place).

I dont agree with you here. It is not Harveyn's responsibility to sort the last mess out as it wasn't his mess. He is doing it because he wanted to try and help.
He's now doing a charity thing and running it himself. Fair play to him. He doesn't have to deal with anyone else's crap along the way.

Regarding the previous charity disaster, that was a forum-backed charity appeal. Many people here donated, contributed or purchased items because of this forum's backing, relying on the fact that Banksy.info as an entity (as opposed to verbalkint as an individual) would ensure the proceeds went to the chosen charity. This forum therefore had a duty of care towards both those people and the charity itself.
Consequently, Banksy.info must accept part of the responsibility for the debacle, notwithstanding the fact that it resulted from verbalkint's actions or inactions.
I believe Banksy.info now has a duty to ensure things are sorted out to the extent that verbalkint fails to do so. Whether this is done by the Administrator or a Moderator of Banksy.info is not important as long as it is actually done.
To shirk that responsibility and just attempt to say "it's not our mess, it's all verbalkint's fault" would be distasteful and shameful. It would be a failure of Banksy.info to accept responsibility for not keeping a closer eye on something it actively supported and promoted.

NICK WALKER - Works Up For Mercy Appeal, by Harveyn on Jul 9, 2008 22:19:46 GMT 1, Ruat you completely out of order and you should try reading the charidee thread so that you can comment from an informed position.
I have not walked away from the first charity. The Police have all the artwork and I am helping them with their action against Verbal. This will take several months to resolve and in the interim I can do nothing. I fully intend to complete this process provided both the Police and the members who donated pieces are happy for me to do so

NICK WALKER - Works Up For Mercy Appeal, by kahuna on Jul 9, 2008 22:48:42 GMT 1, I admire Harveyn and Ged for their time and effort in trying to compensate the Mercy Centre for the loss of the misappropriated funds.
So much of the commentary regarding the urban art market is negative and focused on flippers etc. It is refreshing to see members using their initiative for the benefit of others.
With the efforts of Harveyn and Ged being supported by so many generous artists, it is now up to us to get behind the project and support it in any way we can.
Good luck guys. I look forward to participating .

NICK WALKER - Works Up For Mercy Appeal, by Heavyconsumer on Jul 9, 2008 23:30:46 GMT 1, As far as I'm concerned, this project could not be in better hands than Harveyn's. The "charidee" thread is the main reason I am of this opinion. Everyone is capable of making a mistake at times, but I can't imagine what further action Harveyn could've taken, to try to make up for the involvement of Verbalc*nt! Testament to this, is that he was the first member I thought to send a PM when reading Beejoir's artcunt page and I know that many other members shared this thought and also sent him PMs regarding a possible campaign.
This is a positive and original initiative, for a great cause and it's in the very best of hands imo.

I have not walked away from the first charity. The Police have all the artwork and I am helping them with their action against Verbal. This will take several months to resolve and in the interim I can do nothing. I fully intend to complete this process provided both the Police and the members who donated pieces are happy for me to do so
Fair enough, Harveyn. I'd been under the impression there was still much work to be done by Banksy.info in sorting out the verbalkint mess with the first charity. My fear was that coordinating a new appeal would distract you from this. However, if there's nothing to do in the interim you refer to, then you have my apologies and best wishes on the Mercy Centre appeal.

NICK WALKER - Works Up For Mercy Appeal, by Harveyn on Jul 10, 2008 7:32:49 GMT 1, Thank you Ruat.
Okay back onto the appeal.
Chris (Beejoir) has sent me the following message as he is unable to come onto the site directly.
"Would you mind telling the people on there that I am eternally grateful to everyone for supporting my charity and helping with the mess that has been created by this whole saga, also I think I'll get the remaining LV statues back from the Lizard st gallery soon, if anyone is missing them could they please get into contact with me and I'll try to sort them out when I'm back in August."
Thank you Ruat.
