When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by Daniel Silk on Dec 28, 2006 16:49:20 GMT 1, A dig at Banksy??? hmmmmm... I think more a playful dig at the people that lined up to get a Banksy print ('I Want A Banksy' in the red lettering); and also a dig at those that were buying the prints only to sell on Ebay. People who buy for resale give people like you (out of london) a chance of owning one, the more people who buy for resale the cheaper you will be able to get it for. You ae lucky people lined up from 6 am - now you have a chance. if 1000 people lines up all with the intention of putting on their walls you would miss out!!! hurts but the truth deal with it
I agree
If those resellers had not got any it would only mean the prints would have sold just a little bit slower. Everyone knew when the Banksy Flag print was coming out so if ya missed it, ya missed it! I did I now know that if I want one, I would need to pay the going rate on ebay to the people that made the effort, got off their ass and waited in the queue its just the way it is!

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by gordy on Dec 28, 2006 17:14:10 GMT 1, I agree with silky!! get down to london to queue if you really wanted the print. It was no secret on this forum, and in the end they opened the shop at nine - sold out by about 1pm. I realise that maybe for people in say scotland or america this is impossible, but for the majority of people london is reachable. Maybe for the next print they could sell them in birmingham, then manchester, then bristol and nottingham etc.... It is much better than the mad internet scramble. Of course there are always people who will buy to sell but if that was the main story then we would have 700 prints on e-bay not the 30 that have been on? can there ever be a right way anymore?

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by hugs on Dec 28, 2006 17:29:48 GMT 1, I think the Bristol release was a great idea, good timing as well so people didnt have to take time off of work etc and could possibly get to it on dinnertime etc.I'd be very happy if it went that way and gave others outside London a chance. Right...so whos got a flyer to sell ??

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by RBK on Dec 28, 2006 17:37:26 GMT 1, All I was doing was responding to ajuk's claim that 'I think its a dig at Banksy if you ask me.'
I thought it was a dumb comment. The flyer is so obviously directed at the people that queued up, and to a lesser extent - those motivated by money.

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by foundation on Dec 28, 2006 18:24:13 GMT 1, Come on silky, you have been into Banksy long enough to remember previous years when POW were lucky to sell tens of prints in the month, never mind thousands in a couple of hours. Seeing the ammount that went straight onto ebay, you cannot sit there and commend scalpers for getting out of their chair and going off to buy a print for some quick cash, it happens and is a fact of life we have to deal with, and is very grating for those abit farther away, but these parasites need no encouragment, and I do think parasites is the right word, as they are making a very pretty penny from our interest in Banksy.

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by corblimeylimey on Dec 28, 2006 18:27:41 GMT 1, I think it is the most interesting link for a long time!!! ;D why do we want a print so bad to queue for hours etc.... the excitement of opening the tube knowing you are one of only 1000 people to have this amazing piece of artwork!!! Anyone who is lucky enough to have one of these prints will tell you what an amazing print this is!!! one of banksy's finest!!
The reason I made the effort to travel to London to get this print was that it's a great image (I think better than all the LA prints except Trolleys possibly) £100 was a great price and even when I spent near £90 in petrol/train/tube was still worth the effort to save paying £400 on ebay. Shame I didn't get one of those flyers, as I arrived at 9:00, but I wouldn't pay for one.

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by BK83 on Dec 28, 2006 19:10:27 GMT 1, ...... it's only worth as much as you're willing to pay for it ...
That's the thing about art -- there are too many factors that involve creating value. sentiment, mass appeal, cult followings ... how do you put a price on those things?
if the ebay buyer guy has and wants to pay US$500 for a flyer the good on him. lets hope he invested in some acid free tissue paper and a nice miniature frame job, too!!!

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by aimless on Dec 28, 2006 19:44:16 GMT 1, and all this helps the fans outside of the UK how? I like the lottery approach personally.
That was my point.
It doesnt help people living outside the UK, the Ebay people make it possible for people living outside UK.
Next yr, lets assume Ghetto out of UK, The ebay people will make it possible for us to get prints we want.
Without a secondry market the opportunity for purchases will be very low for most people.
Is only my humble opinion and if I am "talking out of my a£$se" or "driving on the wrong side of the road" as a couple of you pointed out, then so be it.

Dont you feel grateful that an artist you have been following for so long has become far bigger than anyone (including him) could have imagined.
Doent it make the pieces you purased all those years ago all the more valauble to you? (monetary obviously but sentimental also)
And those who have collected banksy for ages will have pieces with are unattainable now days to most. This is a good thing no?
..... and if you then say, "no, having rare art doesnt mean anythig to me" that "it neednt be valuable for me to appreciate" and "I just like the images on my wall"
Then sell your £2500 print and get a repro done!

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by gordy on Dec 28, 2006 20:21:11 GMT 1, Fair play if that is what you think!!!! personally, it just makes most artist's work unattainable!! I missed the boat on the AM friendly fire but there is no way I'm going to pay a Grand for one! Even though it is a beautiful print. I do think some people on forum are nieve to say the least and most would sell a 'christ with shopping bags' for 8k if they had one!no matter how much they loved it!!

I do indeed feel very lucky that several artists I have followed for several years have become popular ( lets me add abit more into the pub conversation now that other people I know now know what I am talking about), I think its fantastic that a whole new breed of art fan is being introduced to art, a once passtime of the rich and chinless. Low banksy prices allowed a good few people to get into it and enjoy it. The various stunts and shows over this year has continued to increase Banksy's exposure and build his fanbase, I dont doubt there are many real fans that have come to love Banksy's work over the last year and they are more than welcome, sadly many people also saw Banksy's increasing profile as a quick way to make some bucks, which to my mind is a shame. The fact that there are so many prints sat in tubes awaiting their value to increase to a certain point before they can be resold rather than a new fan being able to buy them from POW for £75 / £150 / £300 is what really bugs me. The images used / made by banksy are only half the rush, the knowledge of owning / displaying a print that you know only another 599 people in the world have, knowing that it was fun trying to find that illusive HAND and getting it back from the framers, helping someone out who asks a question that you know the answer to, thus stopping them buying a worthless backdoor print etc etc etc.. If all you see when you look at a print is the pricetag then I can only wish you well my friend.

I'd prefer a internet based lottery system. That way compared to now (being based in Australia) my odds of actually getting one from POW go up. My odds of not paying through my arse (ebay) also go up.
and..
there still would be a secondary market, right here... I imagine things would be a lot more sensible, not completely amped like they are on the bay.

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by goingblankagain200 on Dec 28, 2006 22:16:30 GMT 1, There are more Banksy fans than there are Banksy prints. However the prints are distributed there will be problems. If the prints are sold for less than their 'market value' then some will be re-sold at a profit. Assuming that demand doesn't drop then the only way out would be to issue unlimited copies of each. Yet, the knowledge that 100,000 other people have the same print on their wall rather ruins it for me.
All in all I'd rather have the hassle, the sleeping on a friend's couch, the queues, the internet frustrations, the waiting and, just occasionally, the moments of triumph when you get home to find a print waiting, pull it from its tube with trembling hands and think- fuck, I like that...
:-)

If the prints are sold for less than their 'market value' then some will be re-sold at a profit. Assuming that demand doesn't drop then the only way out would be to issue unlimited copies of each. Yet, the knowledge that 100,000 other people have the same print on their wall rather ruins it for me.
All in all I'd rather have the hassle, the sleeping on a friend's couch, the queues, the internet frustrations, the waiting and, just occasionally, the moments of triumph when you get home to find a print waiting, pull it from its tube with trembling hands and think- fuck, I like that...

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by Daniel Silk on Dec 28, 2006 22:25:51 GMT 1, Come on silky, you have been into Banksy long enough to remember previous years when POW were lucky to sell tens of prints in the month, never mind thousands in a couple of hours.
I live in Dorset and I have been very ill recently so traveling up to London to get the Banksy Flag print was just too much for me so I missed out America was also a little too far for me to travel to get the LA prints, but I don't hold anything against those that did travel, and did get the prints, good luck to them! I don't care if they hang them on the wall or sell them on ebay, why would that bother me? jealousy?

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by aimless on Dec 28, 2006 23:29:57 GMT 1, Dont you feel grateful that an artist you have been following for so long has become far bigger than anyone (including him) could have imagined. Doent it make the pieces you purased all those years ago all the more valauble to you? (monetary obviously but sentimental also) And those who have collected banksy for ages will have pieces with are unattainable now days to most. This is a good thing no? ..... and if you then say, "no, having rare art doesnt mean anythig to me" that "it neednt be valuable for me to appreciate" and "I just like the images on my wall" Then sell your £2500 print and get a repro done!
Fair point mate, fair point.

Well, perhaps not jealousy or any other reason for you personally, but for many others, I think the reason is 'unaffordability'... and I mean this in all due respect to everyone out there, of course. I see merits in both sides of the argument, but also think the people who don't feel the 'pinch' from baggers/scalpers are those who either a) can afford the eBay prices and don't mind paying them; or b) don't really care much about the print(s) in question.
Conversely, the only people who can feel the bagger/scalper 'pinch' are those who could have gotten a print that they *really* wanted at a price that was within their reach, but for whatever reasons beyond their control, were deprived of that opportunity... and it's basically the end of the road for them because they cannot afford the crazy eBay prices.
So basically, this debate can go on and on, and few people will ever get convinced of the respective counterarguments. You won't know how it feels to be on another side unless you've been there yourself, which not everyone will have a chance to do... a guy will never know what it feels like to have a 'female love orifice', just as a woman will never know what it feels like to walk around with something hanging between your legs So I propose that everybody simply acknowledge the existence of each side, realize that there are members on here who belong to the other side of the argument, empathize as best as as possible, and be tactful and civil to each other. Stop trying to convince each other that the position you may be in is the 'correct' one, 'cos we've already seen that it won't work. Just look at the world today.
(Yes, I still have all these residual sappy holiday 'love and peace' crap stuck on me) ;D

When I grow up I want to have as much money as Ban, by mido on Dec 29, 2006 0:42:54 GMT 1, ignorance. simple as that.
It won't be clear to many people that (unless we are sudden;y told otherwise) it has nothing to do with POW/banksy.
it's all quite funny in that respect.
think of the fun POW/Mr B could have at our expense now (cf, can't believe that morons but this shit). they could release stuff under other names, other sites, they could wander around Shoreditch leaving prints/flyers etc lying around, they could have different artists releasing work that is actually done by others (see if it sells..) ....they could do almost anything, and stand back and see what happens...
Just don't understand , simple photocopied paper with a design any one can do in a few hours , don't understand it at all £250 ? for a flyer that has nothing to do with Banksy (are we all missing something? ,or is it just me ? seems totally insane to me but if someone can enlighten me great
