Price Crash Who Cares???, by corblimeylimey on Aug 23, 2007 16:08:49 GMT 1, Why are they concerned I dunno? But why are you so concerned that they're so concerned? I dunno The popularity of these threads is like rubbernecking at a traffic accident. As annyoing and horrible as they are everyone has to look and get their two cents in.
It's a debate, if no one has any opinions (or at least didn't voice them) this place would be pretty quiet, all we'd get is a million 'when do you think POW will release the next Banksy?' threads.

Price Crash Who Cares???, by BONGO on Aug 23, 2007 16:13:12 GMT 1, IF YOU LIKE IT, THEN IT IS ALL THAT MATTERS. MARKET VALUE IS IRELEVANT IF YOU COULD AFFORD IT WHEN YOU BOUGHT IT AND LIKE THE IMAGE. INCREASE IN NOTIONAL VALUE IS AN ADDED BENEFIT false. if you came into a bit of money or you had saved up for ages and spent £1000 on an unsigned banksy and then next year it was worth around £300 you would care. you'd be mad not to. a very high percentage of these prints are stored in folders under beds - all these people care. a little over a year ago we were on here laughing about how how napalm, love rat and virgin mary had taken years to sell. if there came on sell now lets be honest if any of us had the the oppotunity to buy one for £75 we would because of what it's value is. the way i see it is i like having a few prints on my walls. i could sell them and make a few grand but what am i gonna spend the money on? more prints because thats what i enjoy. i.e. it's pointless selling them but if they were worth 50p tommorrow i might regret it.
NOT FALSE

Only following the 'big hitters' is like only liking what's in the top 10 music charts, they'll be the only one's that'll be publicly reconisable in the future, how shallow is that? THAT IS WHY BONGO USED THE TERM PUBLICLY RECOGNISABLE. PUBLIC RECOGNITION IS INTRINSICALLY LINKED TO DEMAND AND THUS END COST
But we're in a specialist group, the masses don't like graffiti art, if we were baseball card collectors we'd know which was hot and what wasn't but general public hasn't a clue.

THE WIDER THE RECOGNITION, THE HIGHER THE PRICE AN ARTICLE CAN COMMAND
A RARE BASEBALL CARD WILL ONLY IMPRESS OTHER BASEBALL CARD COLLECTORS, AS WOULD A SHRINK WRAPPED EDITION OF SUPERMAN 1 TO COMIC COLLECTORS.

Call me crazy but I'm presuming most people buy art to hang on thier walls. A tiny minority buy it as an investment and a few buy to give as gifts.
The people I've given prints to as gifts, they have absolutely no idea how much they're now worth.
* which is cool cos I'm gonna buy them back or swap them for a pittance one day ;D

I think your right. I'm looking out of my suburban window now. If I asked everyone on the street who banksy was, I am sure well under 10% would know. I'm sure if you mentioned the name Warhol, then alot more people would know.

We're talking now and future not the past. If you look at other current artist probably 80% of people would know who Damien Hirst is, even tho its only because of his cut up animals. (even my nan would kno that)

I might be wrong (was a young boy in Warhol's time) but I think Banksy and Warhol are like chalk and cheese in terms of public persona.
Warhol mixed with the bonifide "stars", of his day and age and embraced fame, while we all know what Banksy does and Warhol's legacy since he has passed away has "sky-rocketed", while Banksy is more or less in the early stages of what can be a potentially ultra long and successful career.

Not sure I agree with that. It is banksy's art that most people like. I don't know anyone outside our little group who knows of the paris hilton cd but most of the people I know have seen (at least in the paper) some art done by banksy. Wall and piece has sold 200,000 copies as well.

Yeah, Banksy aint no flash in the pan. Thinking about the influence he has had on other artists and general designs of adverts, record covers, magazines, you can see his style down every high street ;D

When wall and piece came out in 2005 my other half got me a copy for my birthday and so had it delivered to work. When she opened the parcel from Amazon none of her colleagues said who's Banksy they all commented that they didn't know he'd done a book. That, to me, spoke volumes about his popularity and public recognition.

In music terms
1) An artist drops one or two singles (for publicity), before they release their album.
2) You hear the singles, like them and decide to buy the album. Now if that album is disappointing to you or many people, it does not matter about the singles they put out, people will quickly lose interest in that artist and maybe not buy their future albums.
Art terms
1) Banksy does a public prank (for publicity)
2) Even after all the pranks Banksy has done, ultimately, if had produces sub-standard works, he would not be at the levels he is at today.
I.E. if Banksy releases a print and I don't like it, I will not try to buy it and if he consistently releases bad work, I think a lot of people, will not want to buy it ( there are exceptions to this, but thats a new thread, so I won't go into that )
You guys/gals are forgetting (ignoring) one very important element. Banksys popularity=prices are the result of his high profile pranks and less to the art itself. Scary thought as "trendy cool things to have" usually come and go... In music terms 1) An artist drops one or two singles (for publicity), before they release their album. 2) You hear the singles, like them and decide to buy the album. Now if that album is disappointing to you or many people, it does not matter about the singles they put out, people will quickly lose interest in that artist and maybe not buy their future albums. Price Crash Who Cares???, by corblimeylimey on Aug 23, 2007 17:24:28 GMT 1, When wall and piece came out in 2005 my other half got me a copy for my birthday and so had it delivered to work. When she opened the parcel from Amazon none of her colleagues said who's Banksy they all commented that they didn't know he'd done a book. That, to me, spoke volumes about his popularity and public recognition.
Yes, but she works for Montana

Price Crash Who Cares???, by dgb133 on Aug 23, 2007 17:41:42 GMT 1,
I guess it's the tone of what you're saying. Seems the questions you pose are less of a discourse but more defensive about your opinions.
As far as Top tier and second tier artists, who cares if you like the print and especially if you didn't pay much for the print. And if you did pay a lot for the print and you're ok with losing a lot of money on it that's ok too. I have bought a few things that I expect I'd lose money on if I sell it but someties it's ok if I really like it and can afford it and as I feel I'm helping out the arts community and being a patron. (Although I'd feel like a chump if I paid $1000 for a worthless print to some chump on ebay as opposed to an orginzation that nurtures artists.) But as I said earlier - yes I do usually consider a prints future worth when I buy something. Unless you're loaded I think you're a fool not too, especially at the state of current prices.
Anyway, on the one hand you could compare all this to say old psychedlic or old punk music. There were tons of obscure bands that were still great, And it's kind of cool when nowadays you can still discover great new (but old) music that is pretty esoteric and unknown. But there were also a ton of copycat crap bands from each genre too.
But in the future the artists here that fall by the wayside, maybe some of them will be rediscoverd by a few hardcore fans too which is kind of cool? But I think the real contention here might be that I and maybe Bongo and plenty others think some of the Banksy copy cat artists are crap. (sure some are great too) But they're getting paid tons of money for their prints which I think a lot of people feel is only because they're riding the Banksy hype train. And because a lot of people that have been conditioned by Banksy to think it's normal for these prints to become worth small fortunes. Meanwhile I see work by artists I think is much better going unsold because they don't have the hyped up community support and dollar signs flashing around them. I think that's part of the problem. At least with me anyway. I dunno Some of the aggravation here too is the incessant hype about this stuff that is pricing me and most people out of this market anyway. Sorry. But I find that as obnoxious a syou probably find these discussions. Like the 21CL listed for sale with the "Absolutely going to 5 digits soon!" (Yet I'm willing to unload for 8500 - which is still way overproced imo - but that's ok)
I think both sides are getting a little too agravated with each other but the discoussions on this and the economics stem in me from a concern of a lot of people paying way too much money for art. (And there is serious reason to believe the entire art market will see a downturn and soon. In part due t outside influences I won't mention again. Might not affect the 200 pound print market so much, but when people stop piling in to every sos and brp print to scalp after a possible huge drop in prices it will rippe through the whole thing in my opinon.) I think it also stems from a lot of people getting scalped for art. And I think it's a lot of people being defensive about their art.
Anyway, you can have your opinon, I can have an opinion. Ho hum. The day will go on...
This really is my last post on this ;D ;D ;D I'm tired of it too.
