Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by mcnuts on Aug 2, 2008 11:36:02 GMT 1, I just wanted to write a quick post about the Street Art exhibit at the Tate as an FYI for those who are interested. Iโm sure almost everyone here has enjoyed looking at the works on the outside of the building, they are fantastic.
While the Street Artists were paid for their work, did you know that the artists who have their work displayed on the outside of the Tate did not have any of the their work purchased by the Tate as part of their permanent collection?
Street art is ephemeral but surely it would have meant a lot to each of the artists involved to also have a piece of art put into the permanent collection. So, even in a retrospective in 20 years as it stands they have not commissioned a scaleable work of what has been done by the artist or purchased a similar style gallery size piece from the artist. In the case of JR for example, it would be very easy to buy a photograph.
To change this, the Tate need public input which is where you come in. Send them a letter (paper is better than email) and tell them that they should buy some pieces. They are a public institution and public input is important. Why wait 20 years to see how things turn out when they could buy a piece, at minimum, from each of the artists exhibiting on the outside of the building. If they are good enough for the outside of the gallery, why not the inside?
If you feel the same, I encourage you very strongly to tell the Tate in writing. Also mention you liked the exhibit. People if they are pissed take the time to complain but often not for kudos. So, do it! Now.
An alternative is to start either an online petition or perhaps a petition that can be signed and given to the Tate. Maybe something like this can be made available at the Urban Angel preview? People could sign their names and then it could be delivered to the Tate? How does that sound?
If not, you can send your own letter:
Write to: Tate Modern Bankside, London SE1 9TG
or email: visiting.modern@tate.org.uk

Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by aginghippie on Aug 6, 2008 5:09:28 GMT 1, There are several reasons for them not to buy in early. The two principle ones are that you can't tell if the movement is significant (hence the 10 year rule) and the second is storage.
The cost thing is an issue but less than you might think. People donate art to museums so they can save their money for the significant works in a movement. Those works are exactly the ones that are difficult to spot at the time.
