Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by Gurn on Nov 25, 2008 19:55:57 GMT 1, I got to thinking what iconic street art/stencil images(which have been also used on canvas or print) would be in a retrospective.......I'd include Beejoir-LV Child,Banksy-Laugh Now,Mantis-All fall Down,Nick Walker-Apish Angel,Eelus-Shat At,Jef-Sitting Kid and Eine-Scary.

Faile Dog would also be a contender.

Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by toothfairy on Dec 18, 2008 10:33:28 GMT 1, Thanks Remi, really enjoyed your talk at the Tate. You gave me a whole new appreciation for graf writing and I truly enjoyed seeing your personal photos.
I remember hunting around London for an Adam Neate and thinking you guys really do see a different side to our city.

Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by snausages on Jan 5, 2009 19:51:01 GMT 1, So Any urban art it were to exhibit would have to be donated - this will be a long way off for sure, unless Banksy is feeling generous. Maybe a mr. Steve Lazarides could donate? Or maybe some really rich people who collect urban art might donate. Galleries typically give 15-20% off for museum purchases, so if any rich person is feeling generous you could maybe buy something at a discount with a promise of a future donation... Pretty prestigious thing to donate to museums. But even then I'm not sure about the behind the scenes stuff. I'm sure they wouldn't take just any old thing because someone is giving it away.
Of course Banksy stands a strong chance of getting in the Tate collection. Of the other artists, I actually think Swoon is best positioned. Faile, Neate, Micallef, Gemeos are possibilities too, but I wouldn't count on anything. And any other artists are long shots imo.
Those museum folks are much more concentrated on the current contemporary hot shots (of which there are hundreds to thousands to compete with) as well as shoring up their modern collections than they are with keeping an eye on second tier artists on this scene.
Also, I recently checked the MOMA collection on their site and they don't have any Banksy listed. I wonder what they did with the Soup Can print he left behind? Did any of those museums keep any of the Banksy work he left behind?

Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by mikeo on Jan 5, 2009 20:14:09 GMT 1, The Tate won't buy unless the art's value is well into six figures I heard a little while back. Which seems a pretty poor way to judge the artistic merits of something.
If Nick walker, eelus, and Jef Aerosol make it into the Tates collection I'd be staggered. Their current output is nowhere near mature enough in technique, style, nor depth for the tate.
Eine might have a chance as his letter canvasses could easily slip into a pop art show and his work defines East London's street art scene like no others.

Tate Modern ๐ฌ๐ง London, by bradpitt on Jan 5, 2009 20:20:49 GMT 1, I think for sure there will be many more exhibitions on this genre of work in the Tate modern, but at the moment I can't think of one artist that could pull off a whole show?! Micallef has his print at the Tate britain already. Anyway, who cares! keep street art on the streets and in the underground galleries.
Apparently Steve Lazarides went and collected some items that were left at museums by Banksy, the rest were probably cast in the bin
