OBEY Clothing, by jam on Nov 16, 2008 1:10:49 GMT 1, Like it or no, Shep did it first, Shep did it good, and Shep did it like no other in the history of modern "street art".
What did Shep do first? What does he do well (aside from plagiarizing and profiteering)?

OBEY Clothing, by jam on Nov 16, 2008 1:09:35 GMT 1, His entire aesthetic is based on the subversion of advertising and marketing. Hence much of his imagery involves the repurposing of images - specifically tropes of Communist Propaganda. The uneducated would say that's "uncreative." - The combination of propaganda images with pop art and commercial advertising is uncreative because it had been done before Shep took the idea and began claiming originality.
As for profiteering... Shep makes it very clear that he hopes to "Democratize Art" by keeping his print releases cheap. $40 for a S/N print?!?! That's "profiteering"? - It sure is. He purposely prices things lower than market to spur on a resale opportunity for the initial purchaser and forces a created market demand to drive his prints selling out instantly. That is the stepping stone to originals and swag such as t-shirts and hoodies. Creating demand is profiteering. Shep is the Wallmart of the art world... low priced high volume art.
He was arrested as recently as August for continuing his paster efforts. (hardly just an artist who's sitting back, resting on his laurels to get paid) - Fantastic promotion, assisting in his mystique. Just imagine how much it would have cost him in taking out adds to promote his art, VS all the free write ups for getting arrested (no jail, minimum fines).
Shep gave the proceeds from several of his prints away to various liberal causes - Moveon.org, No on 8, the ACLU, the Obama campaign, etc. (Is that your definition of a "thieving profiteer?") - I don't care if he gives proceeds to anyone, it's self promotion and likely cheaper than he could otherwise advertise. Continuing to take images from other artists, and to call them his own by "repourposing" them is the work of a thief... selling those images as something new or creative is a profiteer.
Uncreative? Need I remind you how many firsts you can attribute to Shepard? He was the first artist to do an Obama print release - back when Obama was projected to lose to Hilary Clinton. He is to wheat pasters, what Blek Le Rat is to stenciling. Artists like Skullphone etc. pretty much clone Shepard's early career path. - I fail to see how this was creative. He took an angle that was heavily based on Alberto Korda's photo of Che, and did Obama with it. What brilliance.
The diss on him that he's a commercial self-promoter misunderstands street art... Of course he's a commercial self promoter, every street artist is!!! Every Tagger is! If you're not, you're a bad street artist - you're a gallery artist! - He is a pirate of images and concepts, who is making loads of money by creating a market and mistaken view that he is talented.

OBEY Clothing, by jam on Nov 15, 2008 20:07:53 GMT 1, Shep... the consummate tool. Does everything he involves himself in need to commercialize street art? Still waiting to see one original idea, one piece of "art" worth putting on a wall, one glimmer of hope that he isn't the uncreative thieving profiteer that all the clues lead me to believe.

Supine - Perfect Wave has arrived!, by jam on Oct 27, 2008 5:15:30 GMT 1, That's one of them. That's why I said 'Supine like' They are obviously no where near as good as the real thing. But makes you wonder why anyone would try and copy the style so closely.

Banksy โข The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill, by jam on Oct 9, 2008 4:52:17 GMT 1, So has nobody gone down to scope the place out yet?
You can see in the windows of the storefront, but can't get in until tomorrow. Lots of foot traffic, many people 'window shopping'.

jose parla pirate alphabet #3, by jam on Oct 6, 2008 23:07:26 GMT 1, Props Rico, youre .99 risk paid off. I had a zero feedback buyer from Hong Kong purchase a $7900 Murakami item off me and it all worked out. I understand being suspicious of zero feedback buyers but I also understand that some high end buyers dont have the time to rummage through ebay on a daily basis and thus have little, if any, feedback.
I know a couple people who only use new accounts to buy no reserve stuff on ebay just to scare off potential buyers and help keep the bids low. People instantly (and wrongly) assume a new bidder ID means a shill, so there are buyers that use that to their advantage. I'd bet it would have went higher if all bidders would have had high f/b.

JetSet Graffiti stole my money - what can I do?!?!, by jam on Oct 6, 2008 16:44:22 GMT 1, Jam - what great information. It looks like you have had bad experiences to have that sort of info to hand?
I haven't had any dealings with JetSet. Frankly, the entire issue with his having multiple copies of Gold Flags and Ghetto Trolleys put me off... not to mention the hacked up 'street' pieces from the Ghetto he was trying to sell. That said, I can empathize with people who have limited resources or long distance that would make recovering a refund more difficult. I have found it's best to utilize tools that are in place to go after people like Daniel, the government does not seem to have limitations of cash or effort. From JetSet's point of view, what one would be more of a threat: A letter from a private party attorney in another country, or one from the CA attorney general?

JetSet Graffiti stole my money - what can I do?!?!, by jam on Oct 6, 2008 12:54:54 GMT 1, [As I had posted in a similar thread]
Who knows what state Daniel lives in and operates JetSet Graffiti from as a business? Find that out if it's CA for certain, then file complaints about his business practices and theft to the state attorney general ag.ca.gov/. They will investigate and prosecute him, and put him in jail and/or fine him.
Regardless of weather nor not anything happens to him on the criminal front, they will turn his info over to the IRS who will comb though his income to make sure he has declared everything he made (which is HIGHLY unlikely considering things like the Palestine 'recovered' Banksy wall and prints from SG). If he hasn't paid income tax on everything, he will wind up in jail for tax evasion. If you prefer to do it on your own, contact the IRS Criminal Investigation Hotline at 001.800.829.0433 , and speak to someone about your concerns over his business practices and high probability that he isn't paying taxes on the income.

Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by jam on Sept 29, 2008 20:07:52 GMT 1, Again Jam, I'm not asking him to authenticate street pieces, I have issue with him painting on property that at this point he know will be f**ked with and cause even more damage than just the paint and then call those people criminals but act as though he himself is innocent in the process.
I suppose my position is that he feels if he doesn't legitimize the theft of street pieces by authenticating them, it will lessen the chance people will "cause even more damage" by attempting to steal them. For that reason, I don't find his actions as being ones that are hypocritical as much as proactive.
And I have issue with him telling people to boycott sales. If you don't endorse the sale of street works fine but I think it's hypocrisy to use his media machine to f**k with the sale of other peoples property which they rightfully own. If he doesn't like that other people are selling his street works he should have not painted on property he didn't own.
I would read a bit more into the reason he has asked people to boycott the sale. For me, it is a strong indication one or more pieces included and that had been 'authenticated' by Vermin were actually fake or known to be stolen. Seeing as how there is no basis of expertise on the part of Vermin to qualify themselves as an authentication board, I tend to lean toward the notion the artist has deeper and more reliable knowledge of the pieces in question.

Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by jam on Sept 29, 2008 19:05:58 GMT 1, No I'm not hear to make money and I don't have street pieces I'm hording. I have 3 banksy prints 2 of which I bought from POW and still have. And I'm not necessarily anti-graffiti but really, I honestly think about 90% of graffiti and tagging is utter crap which makes my neighborhood look like crap and if I was a building owner I would be particularly annoyed that all these crap artists were leaving "gifts for the world" on my building that I would have to waste time and money to remove and possibly damage my building as well. But what are you gonna do?... Anyway Banksy stenciling in London in the 90s and now is about his egoโotherwise he wouldn't have tagged Banksy on his work or laid claim to it (even if he remained anonymous.) But that's fine. Everyones got an ego. But spraying your stuff all over london and putting your logo next to it is branding himself plain and simple. Again, whatever, I don't have too big of an issue with that. My issue is that he used that branding/stenciling whatever you want to call it campaign to catapult to stardom. This campaign where he caused damage to buildings, caused building owners headaches and money to clean it up and cost the government money to clean things up and replace items that were damaged. He catapulted to stardom at the cost of the others. So it goes... And all that is fine except where we reach the point where Banksy starts to step up and criticize people for 'illegaly removing' things even though he 'illegaly paints' things. (hypocritical) (Anyway a fair number of items were removed by proper owners or people who paid to properly remove them.) And then he criticizes people for 'immorally selling works of art that supposedly aren't theirs.' This while Banksy illegally painted on the things that weren't his! (hypocritical) Although Banksy didn't literally profit from his street campaigns his stardom profited big time from it. In my opinion he now owes an enormous debt to the public and people who's property he abused and used for personal gain so for him to now tell those people NO you can't sell it and if you try to do so I will use my media machine to rain on your parade is a total jackass move. I can't help but now see how hypocritical all this is. And I don't care if he donates money to charity or buys escalades. It doesn't matter. It's still hypocritical.
I believe the few people spouting off about "hypocrisy" are missing the logic behind refusing to authenticate street pieces. From Banksy's point of view, it will do nothing but cause issue for everyone involved if he begins authenticating street pieces and for a number of reasons.
First, it would be a logistical nightmare for him to authenticate each and every piece that he has ever painted. In the end, Banksy is the only person able to confirm a piece is of his hand, and there isn't enough time in the day to go through the requests he would receive if he opened this door. I personally don't want him mired down in authenticating these pieces anyhow... I'd much rather see him working on new art.
Second, how would one go about proving without any doubt that they are the rightful owner of pieces that had been removed from the street? We know there are a tiny few that have been purchased, but the majority have been stolen. There isn't a way to clearly prove you are the owner, aside from something like a scrap of paper that says 'I, owner of this concrete wall, agrees to sell the portion that has a painting on it to so and so", so there is no method to show a legal and fair ownership transfer has taken place. I am sure if sketchy ownership transfers were allowed in any case, Pest Control would be inundated by requests for authentication that included forged ownership papers, as the people offering them wouldn't have had an issue chiseling a piece from the street and I am sure it wouldn't be a stretch to think they would also forge ownership papers.
Third, the flood gates would be wide open for people to steal everything from the street if Banksy would authenticate pieces. Not only would there be major property damage caused by removal of pieces (not the same thing as the slight damage of painting a piece), but there would be risk of injury of removers and/or property owners when they start getting risky in hopes to gain a Banksy street piece. What about street signs or bollards that have been removed and create an accident or death, because Banksy was willing to chance these types of issues by authenticating street pieces? The idea would prove to be a massive legal issue for Banksy, and hardly worth the issues that would be caused for property owners waking up to some loon jackhammering the side of their house to remove a piece. These risks aren't worth allowing a few street pirates to make a quick profit be removing work from the street.
Lastly, there are numerous fake pieces on the streets. Not only would profiteers be stealing authentic pieces and causing major damage to private property and the public in general by removing the authentic ones, the same issues would be caused for the fakes. Even if someone took appropriate measures to take possession of pieces, anyone who saw something they presumed was a Banksy and decided to purchase from the property owner would be caught out when they went through the issues and cost to remove it, only to find out it was a fake in the first place.

Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by jam on Sept 29, 2008 2:01:43 GMT 1, Wrong again? Where is the rule written that the art market won't recognize a panel of experts opinion on the authenticity of something? They do it all the time. If the artist refuses to authenticate something it's fair game for others to step in and do so. If you don't like it then don't bid on it, plain and simple.
What qualifies anyone from Vermin to call themselves a "panel of experts"?

Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by jam on Sept 29, 2008 0:26:27 GMT 1, Somewhere in those rules you've dreamt up, why don't you add a couple more:
-Don't think that just because it looks like a Banksy, and even has a Banksy tag, means it is by Banksy if it came from the street.
-Don't think it's cool to steal pieces from the street without consulting the property owners so you can flog them on ebay or in auctions. When you do steal art, or buy art that is stolen, don't be upset when you have a hard time shifting it.
-Dont set up a sham of an 'authentication' company to try to give credibility to the authorship and sell said works in an auction because you hold so many street pieces and have no other way to profit on them.

Banksy Rat Mural in NYC - New York, by jam on Sept 28, 2008 9:52:56 GMT 1, I am flying to NYC Oct 9-12th, suppose I should take a camera incase I run into any other Banksy stuff. Nice to see this on a wall that can't be removed like some of the ones in New Orleans were. I'd rather see them painted over than hacked up.

Banksy Statement RE: Lyon & Turnbull, by jam on Sept 27, 2008 21:36:34 GMT 1, See I know more about you then you do me!!!
Why go with personal attacks over simply posting factual posts? If so inclined, one could publicize some sketchy dealing you've had such as the Ron English SG fiasco, amongst other issues. When you yourself have a checkered past, it would wise to avoid going personal. It's a small world, and sometimes people you are trying to impress will learn details that would overshadow any positive strides you've attempted to make because of your lack of discretion.

A pair of Banksy's in Sotheby's evening sale, by jam on Sept 26, 2008 19:15:53 GMT 1, Steve had this one as well... since Santas Ghetto '02 I believe. There are two versions, this 1/1 with a full image including legs, and the other with them cropped as seen in the print version. The price has certainly gone up since then, amazing that it didn't sell back then.

Laz - Outsiders - New York - September 2008, by jam on Sept 26, 2008 2:15:44 GMT 1, Mr Brainwash crap is showing up all over the streets of NY now, so people are jumping to conclusions and many rumors are swirling because people cant tell the difference between MBW and Banksy for some reason. Doesn't this guy do anything on his own? We also know Santa's Ghetto is only a few months away, and Banksy does that show yearly, so I don't see what all the speculation is about.

VERMIN CONTROL Statement, by jam on Sept 24, 2008 15:54:24 GMT 1, Pest Control is known to be linked to Banksy - so obviously they can't give authentication for grey area pieces which could land him in hot water... Where are you getting this info from? Where is any proof that Banksy is linked to Vermin?
jam - do you know Banksy? While I do not know him personally, I do know people that are in direct contact with him. I can say with full confidence, Vermin is in NO WAY related to him or Pest Control.
I have no relationship with Vermin! just applying some logic and a pretty sensible counter argument which hasn't been aired here yet. I would place a bet that there is some type of relationship between Vermin and Pest Control. I assure you, there is not a relationship!

VERMIN CONTROL Statement, by jam on Sept 24, 2008 15:41:13 GMT 1, Well, maybe the possibility warrants more than 1 second of thinking then!
No... actually it doesn't. Pest Control and by extention, Banksy, have NO RELATIONSHIP with Vermin.

Any market players/traders on this board???, by jam on Sept 24, 2008 14:51:56 GMT 1, Have heart Burn. In my experience; the more of an effort a person puts into trying to prove their wealth on internet forums (as well as in 'real life'), the less likely it is that they are anywhere near as wealthy as they would want others to believe. Further, I remain well wary of the age and mental capacity of forum personas that use spelling such as 'sux', 'cuz', and take time to subvert forum sensor tools by using 'sh1t'.
We all need to step back and let this thread die the meaningless death it deserves and slip quietly into oblivian... I am sick of it clogging up the last 100 posts.

Banksy Grin Reaper Print, by jam on Sept 21, 2008 11:59:43 GMT 1, 1 day listing, no reserve, payment VIA bank wire only? Sounds like a stolen account or a scam... not something I'd risk my dosh on unless I could pick it up in person.
