New U.S tax on prints photos e.t.c October 18th, by lee3 on Oct 20, 2019 19:04:05 GMT 1, I was reading a few articles on this last week. The article linked below dives a bit deeper and as a casual observer, I'm reassured by the final comment from an expert in the matter:

Electric Chairs Are Not a Gas (Lost Banksy ?#2), by lee3 on Oct 19, 2019 18:31:05 GMT 1, I would also like to see better pictures of the pink Pitbull canvas seen above as it also doesn't seem to have come up in auction I recall many years ago that ikon ltd gallery out of LA had a very similar but different (I believe) version of that image. Here is an old photo I found from a quick google search though it doesn't appear too be on offer anymore at their current site. Hope you're well, cosmic.

Banksy Monkey (Devolved) Parliament sells for ยฃ9.9Million, by lee3 on Sept 15, 2019 19:17:34 GMT 1, Are there two versions of this work? One with the lights on and one with the lights off? This looks to be the one that was displayed at the Bristol Museum. Wow, keen eye. I hadn't noticed that previously. I'd speculate this a case of the artist performing substantial rework post show as he did with many other works from the museum but only PC would know for certain. It looks far better with the lights off to me.

Banksy Print, Canvas, WANTED, by lee3 on Aug 14, 2019 18:15:43 GMT 1, I wonder how the shredded piece will go this time, its back up for auction, though i can't see it being in the online print sale Next Month, Sotheby's and Christie's will host dueling Banksy print sales online. The auctions will include some of the anonymous Bristol artist's most famous pieces, "including the self-destructing artwork that sold last Autumn" I suspect the semantics are confusing. We can be fairly certain the shredded GwB isn't coming under the hammer. I think what they are trying (albeit poorly) to convey is that the artwork, Gwb, will be available in print form available for bidders in these online print sales especially since the quote is attributed to a a specialist from the print and multiples department. If it were the former artwork, that quote would be from someone senior regarding evening sales which wouldn't be teased in August.

Banksy Grappling Hook, by lee3 on Jul 17, 2019 19:24:53 GMT 1, >>>>As blerd says its good to know the sale price but yes really this should have been marked down as passed. From what i can remember it was marked as passed and then changed. <<<
This is a recent phenomenon which is a good change for the wider art market. Subsequent to Bonhams updating the Banksy price I had a short discussion with Christie's on a lot that passed in May and they offered to "update the auction ledger to reflect the post sale price paid." I view this as a positive change for everyone involved as it helps both the house itself reflect a sale and the new owner acquiring a work that in years past would have been viewed by many/most as burned.

Phillips Art Auctions โข New York, Hong Kong & London, by lee3 on May 11, 2019 0:38:02 GMT 1, >>>anyone know what this piece eventually sold for in 2014?<<<
This will be the fourth from that edition to come to market according to a quick search (results on the previous 3 below). That is an enormous number for the low estimate on that ballerina considering the jurisdiction and date of sale squeezed in between the more robust/traditional NY sales in May and London in June. If the reserve is the low estimate for that piece, that translates to a $480k price with premium required for sale. That seems aggressive to me and may well scare away potential suitors though perhaps I'm a step behind the times. Here are the previous 3 works including the pair that the New Zealand couple auctioned at Bonhams:
Banksy Title ANGEL HEAD Description signed and inscribed CP/28 on the reverse spraypaint on canvas 40.5 by 30.5cm.; 16 by 12in. Executed in 2013. Medium spraypaint on canvas Year of Work 2013 Size Height 15.9 in.; Width 12 in. / Height 40.5 cm.; Width 30.5 cm. Misc. Signed, Inscribed Sale of Sotheby's London: Tuesday, March 15, 2016 [Lot 00015] Contemporary Curated Estimate 50,000 - 70,000 GBP ? (70,841 - 99,178 USD) Sold For Bought In Provenance Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner
Banksy Title Kids on Guns Description 2013 signed and numbered CP/15 on the overlap stencil spray paint on canvas 45.5 by 45.5 cm. 17 15/16 by 17 15/16 in. This work was executed in 2013. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Pest Control Office Medium stencil spray paint on canvas Year of Work 2013 Size Height 17.9 in.; Width 17.9 in. / Height 45.5 cm.; Width 45.5 cm. Misc. Signed Sale of Bonhams London: Wednesday, July 2, 2014 [Lot 00012] Post-War & Contemporary Art Estimate 50,000 - 70,000 GBP ? (85,822 - 120,151 USD) Sold For 68,500 GBP Premium ? (117,576 USD) Provenance Banksy's stall in Central Park, New York Acquired directly from the above by the present owner in 2013 Exhibition Christchurch, Canterbury Museum, Rise, 2013-2014
Banksy Title Winnie The Pooh Description 2013 signed and numbered CP/10 on the overlap stencil spray paint on canvas 45.5 by 45.5 cm. Misc. Signed Sale of Bonhams London: Wednesday, July 2, 2014 [Lot 00013] Post-War & Contemporary Art Estimate 30,000 - 50,000 GBP ? (51,493 - 85,822 USD) Sold For 56,250 GBP Premium ? Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by lee3 on Mar 9, 2019 0:33:39 GMT 1, Contacted Bonham's specialist today to ask about the Hook. Was told there are quite a few post sales offers in and to have a chance I would have to offer 'comfortably' over the low estimate to have any chance! Shame, thought it could have been got for less than low estimate. Would you still have to pay the buyers premium on top? Yes, the house still collects the same buyers premium. It's typical for works to have significant post sale interest in high profile names. Picture dealers galore thinking they can pick off something inexpensive and offer in the gallery bringing welcome attention and hopes for a profit.
Reading Dappy's comment after yours, I, for one, would not call this a blind auction. The house continues to solicit bids and they will select the highest depending on many circumstances. Unlike blind auctions where you submit one bid, bidders may continue to raise offers. Sometimes they'll sell it to the first person who bids the reserve (plus premium), other times they'll work it for a couple weeks but this is generally with input from the consignor so not blind per se as once it gets above the reserve then all after sale bidders know that it will be sold.
As an example, I recall about a decade ago in the depths of the last correction a tiny red keep it real monkey on canvas passing at one of the houses with a 12-15k gbp estimate (form memory). I enquired as did a friend and at least another, unknown (to us) bidder. Once the friend and i put one and one together that we were bidding against each other, I bowed out. He kept at it and eventually lost to the other bidder at ~25k gbp from memory which was considerably more than the high estimate from the actual sale. Point being, I feel comfortable taking the house (if it's christie's, sotheby's, phillips or bonahms) at their word on a post sale transaction as they want the sale as does the consignor. It often behooves someone interested to just cut to the chase and ask at what price can the house sell it? Frankly, I'd be surprised if either of the banksy's that passed this week are returned to the consignors as post sale transactions on unsold lots are the norm these days.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by lee3 on Mar 6, 2019 20:55:48 GMT 1, I'm confused on how these auctions work, if the reserve was a bit less than the low estimate and it failed to sell, does that mean it was chandelier bid up to ยฃ68k to try and get it over the line? It's all a bit of a let down, I was actually hoping the bullish pundits would be correct, on the bright side a white NOLA sold for over ยฃ50k this week at Forum auctions. I just think the subject matter and the awkwardness of the piece wasn't appealing too many people, and the box wasn't enough to pull it over the line. I'm sure the owner of these can still sell them privately for a nice profit on the secondary or they could enjoy them on their walls as I expect was the reason they bought them in the first place. You can be certain the reserve was the low estimate in this case as it is most of the time. As the sales approach the houses will try to get consignors to lower their reserve below the low estimate for works with minimal interest. Obviously this consignor did not lower their reserve or it would have sold at 68 IF the 68 were a true bid. As a habit I always negate any bid on an unsold lot as they are more often than not simply a chandelier. Important to note that the houses have 30 days minimum to work the unsold lots for post sale bids where the consignor may or may not lower their reserve. I've even seen lots that went unsold at auction that sold post sale for more than the high estimate so anything can and does happen.

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by lee3 on Mar 6, 2019 19:12:53 GMT 1, I think it's really important to keep seasonality in mind as this is traditionally warm up season although it's clearly changed the past handful of years into prime time. From my vantage point, after reviewing todays Sotheby's day sale over coffee, it was rather dreadful across the board. Far more bought in lots than expected from the likes of albers, oehlen and kippenberger all of whom were all featured prominently at the start. As the sale meanders along there are buyins from dumas, warhol, banksy and hirst although these were far from their best examples. I thought that gem of a Haring would fare even better as it pops on the wall. Taking all of that into account and keeping in mind that this is Bonhams and not Sotheby's, probably best to temper enthusiasm. How do you know when the auction house buy in? If it doesn't reflect a "lot sold" for price with premium listed underneath it, it didn't sell. Sometimes it can be confused with withdrawn lots by the seller if the house failed to recognize it properly but that's the exception as opposed to the norm. I'll give Bonhams credit as their sale is faring better than I expected.

Artnet Auctions ๐บ๐ฒ, by lee3 on Feb 21, 2019 19:02:31 GMT 1, >>>Where do you go for results? I ran a search and it didnโt have the results yet.<<<
I've been an artnet "price database" subscriber for maybe 15 years now. Looking at my billing history, I'm charged $450 a year for the past few years (they raised the price in 2016). I used to pay less for "individual rollover" which, from memory, permitted 5 or 10 searches a month. I outgrew it at some point more than a decade ago and increased my subscription level to expert. I'm unsure how many searches i get a month or year but I haven't needed to upgrade from the expert level to "Appraiser" or "Specialist." I don't use it as much as I once did but it was and is a great tool for studying the market and I feel like it has saved me exponentially over time. But, certainly not inexpensive at $450/year.

New Banksy in Paris???, by lee3 on Dec 13, 2018 19:23:21 GMT 1, Treweman, no harm, we all look at it differently. One thing that occurred to me well after I posted that back in the summer is the rather hilarious placement across the street from Sorbonne university. I know it's not pronounced Sore-bone university in French but as an American, I can't help but read it that way at first glance. I've wondered at times if the name of the university name played a part in the inspiration and location for the work too.

Building a collection, by lee3 on Nov 18, 2018 21:56:46 GMT 1, >>>oh also dont get the wife involved in your decisions, youโll regret it.<<<<
My wife and I each have veto power with any new addition. I/we find pursuing this collaboratively far more rewarding on a number of levels. Buy what you both love was sage advice I picked up along the way.
>>>There's no one "must have" "buy at all cost" pieces worth losing sleep over. <<<
Those are the best ones in my experience. The ones that torment you into behaving irrationally, that you obsess and over consider from every point of view. You lose sleep, they own you for a bit because they tug at your soul. Those are the ones I cherish most.

Banksy.co.uk โข Official Banksy Website , by lee3 on Oct 28, 2018 19:14:17 GMT 1, Most artists like their work "exhibited" for the publicity...... So I have never heard of an artist not agreeing with an exhibit... can anyone name another one who doesn't? However they are usually involved? right? in curation etc?? All this is rather curious IMO. Cheers I agree with you that most artists like their work exhibited, no question. But this reality is so extreme/atypical that it boggles the mind. I believe all 9 of the "fake" exhibitions on his site have taken place over the past year alone, certainly the past 2. Contrast that with the fact that his 9 authentic shows listed have taken place over the span of 15 years. He's said as much as he's going to say so I'm speculating at this point as an avid admirer for most of those years. He appears to me to be a less is more artist and a perfectionist with his best work free for all.
So the fact that you have a couple handfuls of shows hosted by others for profit conflicts with the very ethos of this artist. Most artists are not working in a context where 5 or 10 shows are open concurrently without permission. Most curators work in concert with a living artist and if that artist said no thank you, that would be the end of the discussion. In one case (mocco) you have a institution charging entry and leveraging receipts to purchase work on secondary to improve their collection and therefore garner more attention over time. I can't think of another situation where an institution behaved similarly with a living artist objecting. There is nothing he can do to remedy the situation apart from pointing out that these things are unsanctioned. It's going to continue regardlessly and some of these are so poorly curated that they are hanging photos of work and charging entry. All of these shows are dilutive and sterile by comparison to the genuine shows he unveils on his own and they're charging a premium for entry.

Sotheby's Auction 20th September London, by lee3 on Aug 22, 2018 18:44:55 GMT 1, Regarding the comments above about low estimates, it's worth mentioning that September has traditionally been warm up sales. These were never prime time auctions with far fewer eyeballs perusing than May/June and Oct/Nov. 20 years ago it was a sign of weakness to consign to these auctions as the fireworks are largely absent compared with the high season sales. Therefore, these are particularly aggressive teaser estimates given the concentration to Hirst and seasonality in the hopes to inspire bidding at a time when most people simply aren't paying attention.
To be fair, there are more people following these September sales than ever before but that is a recent phenomenon. A bit of a gamble to package a single collection in the month of Sep. vs. breaking it up and allocating much of it to morning and day sales in October and November without the Dunphy name headlining the sale.

Blu ๐ฎ๐น Bologna Street Art โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by lee3 on Aug 3, 2018 20:21:27 GMT 1, Back in 2008 I visited the POW headquarters in London. They had four Blu sketches for sale. One of these sketches was also published in the BLU 2004 โ 2007 book. I asked for the price and was quoted ยฃ 900 per sketch.
I passed and bought a Blu print instead...๐๐
I've had the one in the bottom right for 6 or 7 years now as love the artist and it reminded me of some of my travels underwater. Would love to add something more substantial but highly doubtful given his output.

Thx, I caught the โ68 rat at rue maitre-Albert but there is a sister version (like the pair of champagne rats) in the 11th which is close to where weโre staying and for whatever reason I have not seen it on any maps. Appreciate the help just the same.

New Banksy in Paris???, by lee3 on Jun 27, 2018 6:28:04 GMT 1, They might be by banksy but in reality they are not very good, there again they are quick stencils sprayed clandestinely without permission on walls. The rats are sort of banksy branding, the guy feeding the dog it's own leg bone, in my opinion the result of a sick mind and no one has said what it actually means. I don't believe any artist in any medium is supposed to tell you what their art means. That's part of the fun, forming your own opinion and deciding for yourself. I like art that makes me think and in the man/dog piece i happen to see commentary on our exacerbating wealth divide. The man representing the wealthy instead of being nice to those less fortunate, is sawing of their leg (the poor dog in this case) and making them beg in return for their own bone. It is sick as you noted, dark and twisted too but an ugly reality growing worse while lacking empathy. I love that piece and I could be completely wrong regarding the intentions of the artist but that's part of the fun, no?
As for the branding statement, I'm simply not as cynical as some of the folks that post here now. I happen to see pure intentions from this artist, same as it ever was really. It's more enjoyable that way.

Love that. I presume wealth disparity with the mean rich guy sawing off the poor dogs leg and making him beg for his bone. Twisted, dark and perfect. Good stuff

Banksy Artwork, VALUATION, by lee3 on Jun 10, 2018 1:37:18 GMT 1, Why are the estimates a joke? They are estimated really low to increase a bidding war. except for that Angel. Hmmm, i'm not so sure i agree. I think the angel piece is heads and shoulders above the other pair, for my eyes anyway. Obviously the houses always try to estimate low but last time on the block the angel piece did over 200 (the low estimate this time around) and that was 3 years ago:
Banksy Title Angel Description spray paint on perforated galvanised steel mesh, in artist's frame 125.5 x 155 cm (49 3/8 x 61 in.) Medium spray paint on perforated galvanised steel mesh, in artist's frame Year of Work 2009 Size Height 49.4 in.; Width 61 in. / Height 125.5 cm.; Width 155 cm. Sale of Phillips London: Thursday, February 12, 2015 [Lot 00024] Contemporary Art Evening Estimate 200,000 - 300,000 GBP (307,692 - 461,538 USD) Sold For 206,500 GBP Premium (317,692 USD) Provenance Provenance Acquired directly from Pest Control by the present owner
The playmate piece did 33k way back in '07 and most recently sold for 68k in '14 which is considerably lower than it's low estimate this time around (80k):
Banksy Title Playmate of the month Description acrylic and marker on wood39 by 44cm.; 15 3/8 by 17 3/8 in.Executed in 2000 More ... Medium acrylic and marker on wood Year of Work 2000 Size Height 15.4 in.; Width 17.3 in. / Height 39 cm.; Width 44 cm. Sale of Sotheby's London: Thursday, February 13, 2014 [Lot 00348] Contemporary Art Day Auction Estimate 40,000 - 60,000 GBP (66,555 - 99,833 USD) Sold For 60,000 GBP Premium (99,833 USD)
I think they'll all do fine but it's not lost on me that collectors often shun the same works returning to auction repeatedly. Regardless, for my eyes the angel is a stronger work of art than the monkey detonator or that large cut out crude oil both of which had strong auction results just 2 or 3 months ago. I won't be participating but my hunch is that if there are some real fireworks from any of those 3 it would favor the angel. It's worth noting that Phillips has yet to release their evening sale and Christie's hasn't released their day sale yet (they have no evening sale for contemporary this go around which is a first) and Bonhams too so there may be more available for this artist once those catalogs are released next week.
