Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Wearology on Aug 28, 2014 19:54:35 GMT 1, I have never been called a racist in 44 years of my life before - it seems weird to see it in writing coming from a complete stranger. I was just stating some statistics that can easily be found on the internet. I have no opinion on the Ferguson case until all the facts come out. There seems to be a lot of eyewitnesses so the truth will eventually come out and than we can all either recant our statements or say I told you so.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Deleted on Aug 28, 2014 19:56:04 GMT 1, There are lots of problems in America but black on black crime is one that is never spoken about. From 2003 - 2013 - 2,151 whites died by being shot by police compared to 1,130 blacks. I understand that whites are a larger percentage of the US population but it seems that lots of people are getting shot by cops. I shouldn't comment because I have been skipping most of these posts but I will anyway. There is a big difference between white on black crime than black on black or black on black etc. because of the relative power in our society. It becomes that much worse when it is a police officer or other person in a position of power and responsibility. For everyone reading this if you haven't watched the video on white Privilege that was posted earlier in this thread in its entirety then you are missing out. It is hard to have a meaningful, informed conversation on the topic when people don't understand the basic dynamics in play. Wearology you seen like a great guy but you are missing some important perspective on this one. Checkout the video. Now if only I could be so thoughtfully diplomatic. Maybe next time.

Citing black on black crime in a debate about the police using excessive and often unwarranted deadly force against young black people in America is insensitive to say the least, and unless you have the same stats for white on white crime, is an inflammatory reductive argument often used in the defense of white privilege by racists.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by sommguy on Aug 28, 2014 20:14:13 GMT 1, Thje use of lethal force in the United states is no longer based on a system. pepper spray, club, taser and then gun. its shoot first and write up the paperwork! sucks!
did you see the cops in downtown LA that opened fire on an unarmed white guy? he was in a car chase, drunk, and led them to downtown where his car was wrapped around a light post. he was walking around th scar in a daze. obviously in some kind of shock. he was half naked, and totally unarmed. his weapon, the car, was immobilized and the cops, all 5-6 of them, opened fire and murdered that guy in the streets for all to see.
The police are not your friends, and they are not here to protect you or serve you.
you ever wonder why "anything you say can and WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU. never for you....

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Coach on Aug 28, 2014 22:49:25 GMT 1, Here is the video again. One of the most interesting talks I've watched in ages.ย
Thank you very much for posting this. I got a few minutes in and realised my son would relish watching this talk too. We watched it together, pausing and discussing it. He was at the same time discussing it in a joint chat with friends What a great lecture. I genuinely believe it has opened my eyes to some new ways if thinking. Over privileged will now be part of my vocabulary. Together with a belief that as an over privileged person, this does me harm. What I don't yet understand is what can be done about it, that might make any real difference, beyond a recognition of the realities. I do recommend watching this lecture.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by sommguy on Aug 29, 2014 0:34:36 GMT 1, Race is ridiculous. once we start to think and see people for people, then we can be united. but until then, the subject of race will defeat us.

Today in the UK, a study was published by the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission, which criticised the UK as being "deeply elitist" and shutting out diversity in the top jobs in the country.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by sommguy on Aug 29, 2014 1:08:14 GMT 1, Race is a lable to describe you as different from others. it is not who you are, or even what you are... I see what you say Fed, words have many meanings, and unfortunately most people only know the common use ofht words. or only know the popular connotation of the words they use.
Like "Gun" some people see the word as a positive, like your selfdefense or tyranny defense. but others only see the negative. the violence that happens with them, and the misuse.
Race to me, the way we behave with regards to race. is totally odd. Some use it as a tool to divide, among politics and social issues. Some use it to create hate and elitism. Even though it is a fact of the matter, Most people won't agree with this statement:
making a decision based on race, is in fact, a racist act.
Most disagree because they see the word racist as a negative. or only know of it in a negative manner, or used in negative speech. one would not say to themselves, " I make decisions or behave differently based on the race of people around me. But I'm not a a racist. an evil racist..." but in fact they are.
Why is race such a big excuse? Its either the problem of something or the benefit of something, so they seem to say. i wonder why we look at race as the answer?
Why not try to find the similarities? Because the truth is we are the same. Human. some are more popular than others (celebrity) some more wealthy, and the rest of the spectrum. It is what you do as a person that dictates whho and what you are.
well, that's my 23 million cents on the subject!

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by sommguy on Aug 29, 2014 1:16:49 GMT 1, who brought int h e PC police?
Insensitive to speak of facts....? or the mans opinions?
Just because something isn't easy to swallow or hear, doesnt mean it shouldn't be spoken about. you know? Too many people have sensitivity issues. i call that the Wuss or C*nt syndrome. Life is sometimes brutal, but its real. you can't live in politically correct society and prosper. it breeds fascism.... the kind we see now.
it seems noone is moderate about anything. you're either far right or far left and if you disagree with me, your a racist, or a evil establishment republican or democrat. these are also the same people who DEMAND tolerance, while giving NONE to others and their beliefs.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by curiousgeorge on Aug 29, 2014 1:40:28 GMT 1, At some point people are going to have to talk about the real problem in America, but for now political correctness rules the day: "In the 513 days from when Travon Martin died and the jury reached a verdict 11,106 African-Americans have been murdered by other African-Americans in the USA." Wow,Just WOW

I agree with your sentiment, but I meant that sometimes we use our own race as a way to get in touch with our family/community's history. i.e. my aunt wanted to become a painter because of her Dutch heritage, or my cousin wanted to be a chef because of his Italian heritage. Race can form barriers between groups of people, but within those groups, race brings people together. I think there has to be a balance between breaking barriers and respecting where you came from

Besides education is the key to being a knowledgeable. most people won't sacrifice to make it happen, when you are given the short end the societal stick.
I am from a poor family. I didn't finish college... but i sacrificed cool things and focused on what was important. no i buy signed bank sys. on my own home, and i started a nice consulting business with the skills i learned while i was trying to stay alive.
you want to make the world a more balanced and even place for all? get off the labels, and the arguing. and only focus on solutions, without financial interests in mind. make ht priority the people, and things will be fine. but it is not how it works, and you are crazy to think you will stop the movement

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by sommguy on Aug 29, 2014 1:55:49 GMT 1, i agree with you mostly. race is color. you heritage is genealogy and geography. be proud of your heritage and your color of your skin if you want. but "race" is a label an organizer of people into segments. it is not who you are. you may think it, and your grand parents may think it, but its not true. the color of skin makes you no less an irishman, if you black or white. you're till irish! i am not, and you re not either. bt i just used it as a example.

I think we have different definitions of what race is. Maybe it's just semantics, because I understand what you are saying. To some (maybe most?) people, race is color. but I don't think that's necessarily true. You can be black and be Haitian, or be black and be British, or be black and be South African. but you can also be white and be Haitian, be white and be British, or be white and be South American etc. I'd consider these 3 different races, not 2.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by mmmike on Aug 29, 2014 2:29:04 GMT 1, Problem is nobody really knows what happened or the real truth so instead we have people playing toptrumps with the latest "fact" they have just read from the internet Not really, black people and people of colour living in poor neighbourhoods policed by ignorant white racists know the truth. Fact. Glad people are enjoying the video. For the record Nuart Festival posted it first not me. I just reposted because it was so good and I thought some of the conversation going on could use this perspective. An hour is a long time to spend watching a youtube video these days. But this one is worth the time.

I think recognition of the realities and sharing that perspective with others is exactly what is needed to make things better.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Deleted on Aug 29, 2014 7:51:51 GMT 1, This is the last post ill make on this topic, i sympathise with anyone who is being bullied or judged because of what they are irrelevant of race/colour/relgion etc etc. There are people in the police force who shouldnt be there but to pidgeon hole all police officers is just wrong, there are people in many jobs of authority who abuse their position and shouldnt be there, take care workers for example, theres been some horrific examples of care workers abusing patients in the media lately but whats forgotten are the caring loving ones who do a fantastic job looking after those in need, same in the teaching industry and medical etc, its made up of humans so there will be some inspirational, many just doing their job to make ends meet and a few bad eggs, like society in general. The bad ones make the headlines cause bad news sells. The police force is the same, will it ever change?

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Deleted on Aug 29, 2014 8:29:28 GMT 1, Castle any sane person understands there are good and bad people, stupid and intelligent. Obviously though when evil occurs in any form it has to be challenged, people educated and eyes opened, so it doesn't happen again. Again obviously this doesn't stop evil, but it makes the world a little bit better ...

I totally agree with you, any sane person would understand it, my frustration is tbh mostly with the single minded venom towards all white police officers by Nuart, I suppose I'm just spelling out the obvious for the less sane..

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Deleted on Aug 29, 2014 10:01:29 GMT 1, Depressingly being on the 'factually accurate' side of a debate does not necessarily make a person informed nor positive nor good, damage can be created from any standpoint if the will is there and no good can come of it.

apart from a sarky comment, I have not really participcated in the thread. Race may be the trigger, the one theme that overrides race in incidents like this are economic disparities

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by eschiff on Aug 29, 2014 12:34:58 GMT 1, thanks for sharing anbesivam1 interesting report (haven't finished it all yet in fairness) but pretty scary statistics.
That Tim Wise talk was also very good, he's quite an engaging speaker. I would love to see any talks he did post-Obama...anyone have anything like that? The idea of overpriveleged is a very strong one.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Deleted on Aug 29, 2014 12:40:37 GMT 1, Whilst race and socio economic disparities are no doubt connected, it's dangerous and factually incorrect to state that race is not the over riding issue when it comes to 'treatment'. .
