Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by daveart on Aug 21, 2014 14:41:26 GMT 1, nuart - were you trying to be funny with the picture ? or were you really tricked into thinking that was Ferguson, MO ? i really can't tell. but it is the kind of scary thing that happens on the internet where people see something and believe that really there is that big of a mob .. i live in the Midwest, i cant explain enough about how tragic this is .. but also how hard the press is working to make the world think there are actually huge riots going on.. when in reality one headline read "DOZENS MARCH IN FERGUSON" - and it is getting much more coverage now on national and international news than even local news. sad maybe .but i tell you the truth of what is happening here without editorialising. one editorial thought though -- I have to imagine this is driving some small business owners out of business. people unnecessarily scared out of a part of town. shops looted. etc.. none of this chaos will help that young man or his family.
The white priviledge video should be required viewing in usa schools. There should also be equivalent videos required to watch in palestine, isreal, syria, russia, france, most of africa, etc, etc. sadly there is no shortage of divisiveness in the world. Ferguson has us on 8 pages of comments - but not a peep about the beheading of the journalist? more pages on this than Gaza ? African genocide? Russia in ukraine? Civilian plane being shot down fell from the news pretty quick, etc.
Pease say anything you say on here with a smile on your face like you are having a beer in a pub with a friend. as i do no offense intended for anyone . we cant tell people to treat each other better if we quickly stoop to name calling in the process.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by daveart on Aug 21, 2014 15:15:18 GMT 1, a quick story - because i am old - an think someone might care - where i grew up in central USA with relatives in Missouri, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa - and travelling those states - but never to the big cities like St Louis or Kansas City. We were not really big town people. my parents would kind of laugh about the crazy people that would live like that without space around them. Maybe we drove through minneapolis or KC but i never remember stopping... my first experiences with racism was caucasion based. german vs Irish. Everyone vs Dutch becaus they had their own school and don't get me started about our feelings about the private Catholic school in town in the nearby town. of course a lot of this anger and name calling had more to do with who won the sports events than understanding at any level the differences between the titles. A girl i was totally in love with in .. yes.. about 1980 .. informed me her dad had told her in specific terms we could not date because i was not a member of the dutch reform church . which at the time i didnt even know existed. At the same time my parents were well traveled socially minded people. Small town doesnt mean small minded right. They adopted a girl from south korea in the early 70's. so i have a korean sister. i dont think of her as korean much. she is just my sister. personally i have two adopted children. anyway, diversity comes in all forms .. and divisiveness comes in all forms. don't hate cops. pray for better cops.. because when you need help that's who you call. pray for calm civilians. pray for schools. march for peace not for chaos. And dont do anything with anger in your heart.
< Adding this for clarity - i am not comparing anything i experienced or saw in rural midwest to the systemic terrible racism in the south then or now - even now for me traveling to the south is a painful confusing adventure. and yes, Missouri was with the south. >

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by johnnyh on Aug 21, 2014 19:31:45 GMT 1, Where's the victory in a cop that feels so threatned by rioters that he uses a verbal warning to get these people off his back, while being recorded by hundreds of idiots with mobile phones? Wow I wanted to stay out of this thread but wtf. Think it s the opposite actually the cop was being threatening rather than being threatened. this view is supported that while he wildly points his weapon at people for no reason. who you state yourself are basically not a threat at all as too busy filming him on their phones. far as I know no one has ever been shot by an Iphone, Samsung or a nokia. this is also supported by the sensible police sargeant who casually walks up and forces the weapon down and steps between him and the protestors. Not one threatening word is said to the ssargeant and I doubt he would do it if he felt threatened in anyway. also you state Rioters they did not seem like people rioting to me. Looked like a fairly peaceful protest. again look at the second video and how calm the sargeant is. Very casual in his manner which suggest no riot at all in this case. Also notice as he shepherds the cop with the gun away they turn their back to the crowd. They would never do this if there was a threat to their safety. In Ivanhoe response When you're a simpleminded fool yeah life must be pretty simple. Cops are bad and rioters are good. Nah I'm staying out of these topics from now on. My English isn't good enough for an intellectual discussion on this matter and more importantly, it's disgusting how you people talk about the very people that risk their lives to keep you safe on a day to day basis.

interesting that although I am a simplified fool this is what the police department had to say about the incident Ivanhoe According to an official account from the St Louis County Police Department describing the gun-pointing confrontation, an unnamed policeman from the neighbouring community of St Ann levelled his weapon at a Ferguson protester "after a verbal exchange," and that a superior county officer, a sergeant, quickly intervened. The sergeant "immediately took action, forcing the officer to lower the weapon and escorting him away from the area," a statement from the county department said. "The unified command strongly feel these actions are inappropriate, and not indicative of the officers who have worked daily to keep the peace," the police statement said. It said the officer in question had been relieved of duty and suspended indefinitely but gave no further details of any investigation or discipline he might face.
so probably the only simpleminded fools are that police officer for brandishing his weapon and you Ivanhoe as even The police department disagree with you........
fairplay ay to them for reacting and sorting so quickly

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by fingerz on Aug 22, 2014 16:00:30 GMT 1, Kajieme Powell: St Louis police shooting video stirs debate
22 August 2014 Last updated at 00:00 BST
When Kajieme Powell was shot dead by officers in St Louis on Tuesday the city's police chief immediately made clear that the 25-year-old was armed with a knife and posed a threat to their safety.
Keen to avoid the protests which happened in nearby Ferguson in the aftermath of the police shooting which left Michael Brown dead, Sam Dotson promised that the investigation would be "transparent" .
On Wednesday the police released a video filmed by an eyewitness which they said was further evidence that deadly force was justified.
But that video, watched by hundreds of thousands online, has proved controversial. Some claim it contradicts the initial police account and many argue the police could have handled the situation differently.
the vid shows him getting shot about 12 times dont know if it would be a good idea to post a link

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by johnnyh on Aug 22, 2014 16:10:05 GMT 1, Seems to be a way at the moment there. Yes had a knife and posed danger etc but only because he had a knife. But not sure you require 7 bullets to stop a man holding a knife to be a danger. Seems a bit of a blast away till dead concept. This is two shootings one with 6 hits and now this one with 7 this does seem like a shoot to kill policy
Note just my thoughts have not seen the Vid of it

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Deleted on Aug 22, 2014 16:11:33 GMT 1, so sad. I'm sure the cops were scared, but was deadly force really required? Why isn't there another option besides their guns?

ive seen studies as well about the accuracy of a shooter(even well trained ones) being way less accurate in times of extreme stress. Most would be suprised how quickly one can get off 6 shots.
edit: "Even if you are skilled and lucky enough to get a gun out in this tiny window, your chance of hitting the target is low, and that's assuming you are firing from a stance and not the hip. Trained police officers only have a 38% hit rate at 0-2 feet when under stress!"

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by johnnyh on Aug 22, 2014 18:02:54 GMT 1, Dread do you and the other Americans on here really find this worrying. How bad crime is so that this seems normal and vice versa that the police just blast away kill and discuss later
Also this is 6/7 hits so based on that Dread.....fuk knows how many they shot.....using your figs about 15 shots.
Possibly time to pause somewhere amongst all that surely.
I might be sounding anti Police I am not in particular just quite shocked by all this in the US really

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Deleted on Aug 22, 2014 18:40:14 GMT 1, I think there are a lot of police in USA who are only doing the job because they need the money and are counting the days to their retirement.
A lot are probably in survival mode and when confronting people who they belive are agressive and dangerous armed or unarmed. The police turn into robot mode and any ignoring their orders by a person theys top escalâtes the police officers survival instinct and should the person they stop ignore their orders, confront or attack the officer.
The officer takes no chances and shoots in self defence.
There are lots of police working today that should be retired early.

On a mac you can hold the CTRL key and roll the mouse wheel to zoom into it. He seems to have nothing in his hands, his hands don't even seem to be in his pockets. And he seemed no real threat as he was just ambling around.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Deleted on Aug 22, 2014 18:51:44 GMT 1, Its a very tough job being in the police, my dad was pc plod for 30 years, retired now 10 and hardly ever sleeps, when he sleeps he gets flashbacks and hes seen some horrific things, he worked through the troubles and saw children with body parts blown off, men decapitated etc, every time we were getting in the car hed to check for bombs underneath. Very stressful and everyone handles stress differently under pressure, of course there are all types of people in the police force same as everyjob but most will be trying to do their job as best they can i believe.

I agree - it takes a special person to become a cop, and the vast majority of them are good people trying their best to protect us. The cops in Ferguson are probably good people too and are probably devastated that they killed someone. I think the problem is more systematic than anything.... Americans (not just cops) are too quick to pull out a gun to solve a problem.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by dreadnatty on Aug 22, 2014 19:20:04 GMT 1, Dread do you and the other Americans on here really find this worrying. How bad crime is so that this seems normal and vice versa that the police just blast away kill and discuss later Also this is 6/7 hits so based on that Dread.....fuk knows how many they shot.....using your figs about 15 shots. Possibly time to pause somewhere amongst all that surely. I might be sounding anti Police I am not in particular just quite shocked by all this in the US really I wasnt implying they shouldve shot this guy, just wanted to address the 21ft rule and split second decision...pretty sure he had mental issues( i would think a fair amount of these incidents involve people that have some sort of mental issue). Seems like an awful amount of shots in this case .I think people have been trying to develop non-lethal methods of dealing with people in these situations e.g. TASER but none have ever proven to work). Its a brutally tough job. I know a few cops and have a close family member that is retired(never fired a shot - most officers never do). Most cops are honest, hard working people much like any profession. Unfortunately the rotten ones garner most if not all of the media attention. Unless one has been in the situation, its hard for me to judge. Its split second,high-pressure life deciding decision. You or him? How many shots is OK? 3,4? (Ive heard stories of where people were shot while on (meth, speed, crack) have been hit 4+ times and still keep coming). I wish I had answers. I know I could never do it but I appreciate the job that the good ones do.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by fingerz on Aug 22, 2014 19:37:19 GMT 1, Not sure why it hasn't just been posted but here it is. On a mac you can hold the CTRL key and roll the mouse wheel to zoom into it. He seems to have nothing in his hands, his hands don't even seem to be in his pockets. And he seemed no real threat as he was just ambling around. thats the one

I might be sounding anti Police I am not in particular just quite shocked by all this in the US really Its always troublesome to see events like this. Im no expert in crime but in NYC on the whole I think crime is down. Not nearly as many murders/shootings compared to Chicago,DC,Detroit etc. I think its played up more in the 24hour TV/Media/Social Networking world as negative news sells...Politics and special interest groups dont help either IMO.

Another unarmed black teen killed by the police, by Deleted on Aug 23, 2014 8:01:25 GMT 1, No hope. A crowdfunding campaign in support of the officer who shot unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown is under fire as it has raised more money to date than all of the campaigns for the victim of the shooting combined.
Calls to have the website hosting the campaign, GoFundMe, take down thedonation page reached a fever pitch when the internet was alerted to the fact that many of the comments being left alongside donations were hateful and racist in nature. As of Friday, donations to Officer Darren Wilson stood at $234,910 after five days of activity.
A similar campaign for the Michael Brown family – set up on the same website – has raised just over $174,000 in nine days, while a separate fund established specifically for the Brown children had raised $1,136 in 10 days.
A separate campaign meant to support local journalists and keep the events in Ferguson, Missouri, in the news, meanwhile, has raised more than $13,000 so far.
Additionally, when donations began flooding in, many were accompanied by racist comments, causing many on social media to accuse the campaign of violating GoFundMe’s terms and conditions. The website specifically states that “items that promote hate, violence, racial intolerance, or the financial exploitation of a crime” are prohibited.
On Friday, the page supporting Wilson was removed anyway, but not by GoFundMe. Instead, the organizers who set up the campaign stopped taking donations in order to launch another page, which accepted donations for Wilson through a charity that Buzzfeed found to be linked to a police union called Lodge 15 of the Fraternal Order of Police.
The new page states that all previously collected funds will still be delivered to Wilson:
“Please know that all funds received from our events, this GoFundMe site and our TeeSpring campaign will be donated to Officer Darren Wilson, and in the future, donations will still be donated to Officer Wilson, but will be tax deductible for donors as well.”
So far, the new campaign for Wilson has raised more than $31,000.
