Isis, by iamzero on Oct 8, 2014 11:22:19 GMT 1, Again for what it's worth I been to Marrakech a couple of times a year for the last 5 years and stay in a little riad in the less wealthy North medina area. I love the place and the Muslim people there, so friendly and hospitable. I was there the day terrorists bombed the cafe and could easily have been in there at the time, the response from the locals against terrorism was amazing.

Isis, by jonb on Oct 8, 2014 11:39:30 GMT 1, I know when we see some of the butchery it is awful to just think of contemplating standing back and doing nothing, but we also have to look at what we can do. The trouble is because of our actions in the past we will not be seen by anybody as a fair arbitrator. The only other methods we have to intervene are to drop bombs, which is like trying to stop somebody from fighting by throwing hand grenades at them. The damage we do by trying to stop what we don't like is going to create worse problems than we start with. Think of the riots that have just happened when a white police man shot a black man in Missouri, now would that have been improved if the policeman was thirty thousand feet up travelling at four hundred miles an hour and the bullet was a thousand pound bomb.
The problem for me is that we simply do not have any tools that could help, because with only bombs they will be hitting not just ISIS but the people we are supposed to be there to help.

Isis, by iamzero on Oct 8, 2014 11:44:08 GMT 1, Not at all dude. I am not anti religion either, it's a choice. I simply don't believe in forcing that choice on others. My worry in the war on all this that we don't turn on each other in the name of race or religion. If I don't like someone it won't be because they are black, white, Muslim, Christian or anything else sectarian... It'll be because they're a dick.

Is there any way to delete or hide threads? I am familiar with how to ignore members. Thank you for your expert opinion expressed here. If you have anything else to add, please consider saying it in this political forum - www.politicsforum.org Lot of people, you will definitely get attention and responses. Kill ISIS, kill the thread !! I really don't get these kill/delete the thread arguments.
No one is forcing you to read it. If you don't like it, just ignore it. Move along. Simple.
What on earth makes you think you have the right to try and stop others discussing things as they see fit?

Oh we do have tools that can help. Ask any Kurd in Kobane right now what their favourite tool is and they'll tell you it's the B1 Bomber.
They have been praying for weeks for one of these tools to turn up. And now it's there. Which means quite a few Kurdish women will get to live today as opposed to being raped and beheaded - or having to blow themselves up to avoid that fate.
If you want to follow what's happening in Kobane right now, check this guys twitter:

Isis, by jonb on Oct 8, 2014 13:19:28 GMT 1, Yes bomb the emplacements around the town gives immediate relief. But in winning the battle you are loosing the war. Because your actions will be interpreted as anti Arab, and that is going to be good recruitment for ISIS or the like, so every one you kill will be replaced by many others. Because of actions in the past there is no trust without building up trust anything you do will be interpreted as evil, and as such builds the forces against you.

And you are right I have ignored it up to today and expressed my opinion "kill the thread and join a political forum", it is an personal opinion like any other in this thread. Btw the term "expert" was ironic.
What on earth ? Well this thread This ISIS thread is dashing my spirit, people dash one stone against another, they dash off emotive notes, they dash wine with water... DAESH not ISIS... I repeat DAESH not ISIS.
***********
Problem is that I can't just ignore it because it is everywhere, unless there is a way to hide a specific thread.
I have no right indeed, only the admin and mods have right to decide ( Daniel Silk Harveyn Wearology) if this thread is appropriate. It was a "loud" request and I am sure I am not the only one to think the same. There should be a way to hide specific thread or to have specific off-topic thread not showing in recent pages ??
But if admins/mods indeed think it is acceptable to have an off-topic thread, then I am gonna start a "special kitchen racks sale" thread and invite members to take picture of their kitchen racks... and discuss about best rack available, hoping it will end in insults and ranting.

ISIS is the English translation of it.

So you'd prefer just leaving the Kurds to be raped and slaughtered? Really - what would you do?
And ISIS is far from a purely Arabic group - so not sure how fighting it can be considered as anti-arab per se.

Isis, by jonb on Oct 8, 2014 14:24:02 GMT 1, for thebigboss
Firstly I agree with thebigboss to an extent. To my mind it is unfortunate this thread is coming up in new posts it does make it hard for those who do not want to be involved avoid it, however I think badrobot is right and we should not suppress this issue it is about where our culture is going.
For those of you who hate this thread I apologise to you, but I am very much interested in how this community feels on this issue.
To answer Spirit, the problem is how the reagion has been policed in the past. The Kurds up until the gulf war were suppressed by the western powers because the way the boarders were marked out they have no homeland and their independence was consistently crushed because if it was allowed it would destabilise Turkey, Syria, and Iraq and parts of Iran. The Kurds were then used by the dictators of these countries to attack the countries around them, for instance Saddam would gas the Kurds in Iraq to retain control in his area, but supply arms to Kurds in Syria and Turkey Iran to destabilise them. This has meant in each of these countries Kurds have been pushed to the bottom. Now if we start siding with the Kurds they in gaining back even a part of what is due to them will be taking it back from groups like the Arabs. It will been seen as the west just swapping sides again to crush the biggest power in the area, and as soon as the west has done that they will turn on another of our groups.
Now I can understand the argument we are only stopping the killing, but simply nobody in the region will believe you because of the history of lies that the west has always made. Nothing is going to get better until all parties can see a solution which allows them to live as they want to. To do that negotiators are needed not bombs.
You may think we are helping, but in the bigger picture we are just stirring things up again unless we have a clear objective.

I speak a little French, not a lot. But then I don't go around telling people they should use the French words for things instead of the English.
It was you who tried to tell people their terminology was wrong, not me."Daesh, not ISIS, DAESH, not ISIS". Given that ISIS is the most commonly accepted and used English version of the name, I legitimately enquired why you felt that was wrong and that the arabic acronym should be used instead. I asked if you spoke arabic which is a reasonable and logical question given your stance that arabic names should be used.
As yet you have not given any explanation of why you think we should all be using DAESH instead of ISIS other than some vague assertion that the reasons have been explained in french by the french government...
You managed to twist my legitimate question into a personal attack and then compared me to ISIS. Funny.
I'm afraid with that absurd comparison you just lost all and any credibility you had.
Right - off to get some fresh heads to stick on the railings outside my house...

Isis, by Simococo on Oct 8, 2014 17:01:04 GMT 1, Loved this from Michael Moore "Our health insurance companies have killed more Americans than ISIS will EVER dream of killing. When I made "Sicko" I asked people to send me their health care horror stories, the stories about friends and family who died because they couldn't afford the help they needed. I received over 25,000 emails and it took my staff and I over a month to read every single one of them. By the end, we were simply crushed with sadness. It was like we were a witness to a mass murder, and the serial killers were the insurance companies, the corporate chain hospitals, the pharmaceutical companies and the health care lobby.
Always remember -- those in power are in a continual game of keeping us distracted with scary "terrorists" so that we never focus on the REAL terrorists who wear suits and wave the flag."

Isis, by Deleted on Oct 8, 2014 17:02:39 GMT 1, No one guessed right - even with your multiple guesses - and it was a very valid thread. Before your time people used to help each other on this forum, buying Banksy prints and selling them on at cost, or buying one for friends. I tried to do something fun with a print to prove that its not just about money.
Anyway this thread is about ISIS - take it to the other thread

Health insurance companies don't go around killing people they have saved more lives than damaged, but this doesn't fit in with Moore's blinkered views. It's down to the personal choices (or lack of choices for some) and the wider structure of health funding that leads to hardship and loss of life. So, I can't really see the comparison to western health insurance and ISIS.
On an aside, I vaguely remember that this film was one where Moore went to the UK and portrayed the NHS as simpleton yokels and forgot to add that it is proven time and time again as one of the most effective health services in the world.

Well you can call bulls**t on what you like dear fellow that's your problem but the fact is that your wrong.
you said I had never met a Muslim or been to the Middle East. Don't see me inciting any hate just calling out your dumbness....I have had many a conversation with locals of many countries in the Middle East Muslim and Christian, believer and non believers of their various faiths. I have chatted with navy and airforce personnel of various countries during some of the the conflicts. So my opinions come from hearing these view points and my own.
when I am back home we can play passport stamps where do you have in the Middle East? mine include Saudi, UAE, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon,Egypt most of them multiple or many times. I fact I spent a week there only 3 weeks ago What part of the Middle East is Peckham(drop what works in) in anyway!!!!Or have you only been there via the bbc and the internet? It's not quite the same is it. "But my mate says"!!!!!

Isis, by curiousgeorge on Oct 8, 2014 19:43:47 GMT 1, Edit:Sorry in advance for the simplistic viewpoint
Whilst it's easy to jump on popular thought along the lines let's bomb the fcuk out of them. History tells us this does not work. A wise man once said something along the lines of..An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind.
Are we becoming blind? Too late already?? I say there is always hope, without which, what is the point in anything?? I too am guilt of getting hot under the collar and grabbing the nearest iron fist, when infact it's time to put the silk gloves on far all parties involved.
Love, patience, tolerance and understanding is the future, or at least it should bloody be.I honestly don't feel people need to be well-educated to understand this, nor have a higher status in life.Love, patience, tolerance and understanding are all free for anyone with a open mind and open heart. Doesn't need a genius to understand dialogue is the answer here but it will take a genius to get 'leaders' to sit around a table and open up dialogue.
In the meantimeโฆ.We as a country and allied countries could agree to stop arming people who then turn against us. BUTโฆโฆ. that would mean stopping a multi-billion ยฃ industry and I don't think the powers that be want that
Couple of posts here are real cringeworthy in the language used.Almost reads like a sun newspaper 'article'

Choose whatever you like, big pharma, obesity, tobacco, fast food, arms industry.. really, whatever. ISIS haven't got a chance in hell of reaching 0.0001% of the kill rate these industries achieve on a weekly basis. As he says, the real killers wear suits and ties and work on wall street ;-)

People choose to gorge themselves on fast food or smoke cancer sticks or drink themselves to death on alcohol. Big difference there than being targeted by a group of extremists whose only mission is to kill you. You won't die from a pack of fries. People know the risks of unhealthy habits. No one is forcing them to consume those 'vices.' Are you a communist or an anarchist?

Isis, by Deleted on Oct 9, 2014 0:57:47 GMT 1, Keeping an eye on the media recently it's interesting to see a shift in rhetoric implying ground troops will be needed ... (Even though we do know that at least some are already there)
The much less newsworthy part is properly working to get that civil administration up and properly running after all this (that's me being positive !) ....
(And stepping back and not using drones ... Or at least reining in their use to something more moral)
