Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by Hairbland on Jan 21, 2017 14:19:17 GMT 1, Either one. I just don't get why people who have nothing at all nice to say keep coming back. Do they hate all art? If so, why hang out on an art forum. And if they don't, why do they only choose to say negative things. I think maybe being confronted with that insight might steer them to post some positive stuff once in a while. Or maybe they leave. Both results are better for the forum... Same ol' criticism of critics. Booooringggg......
And in a Whatson thread - too easy!

Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by Hairbland on Jan 21, 2017 14:28:40 GMT 1, No interest as usual. Same non strong images are chosen. He should concentrate more on the actual images he chooses, rather then the scribble on them. Dancer and En pointe are his strongest.
Yes, and in my opinion why he is just not that good. The image has to lend itself to the graffiti to make the graffiti work and the image relevant. What he does is largely too simplistic and not thought out, which is why many of the basic images he starts out with are trite or weak or copied blatantly.
The tagging should be done with some relationship to the image, making the work relevant. He has used many poor images picked as if "hey let me tag that" (think old style bicycle work) that don't build on or have anything to do with his formula.
What does his work mean? Most artists are trying to convey something, to speak through their art. What is he saying? Anything?

Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by Viking Surfer on Jan 22, 2017 12:35:20 GMT 1, Believe this is what the full version will look like.
Reading through the last few comments, I'm glad I'm not the only one who 'doesn't get it' with his artwork.
Maybe with this one here you could say 'you have a modern artist pulling back the traditionalistic way of expressing oneself through art with his own modern medium and method of expression'. Something like that would be my reading.
Either way, there is no way it would ever make the wall.

Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by nex on Jan 22, 2017 22:52:35 GMT 1, this 'style' has one point of interest for me, that is, how successful it's been for its protagonist. I mean he's been doing this for 5+ years with little variation and the gold fish bowl of memory (UAA) has been lapping it up. Fair play if I could make money that easily I probably would to!
Saying all of that , toy by Dolk said all that needed to be said.
And I've still not forgotten the Logan Hicks incident.

Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by Dice on Jan 23, 2017 9:02:43 GMT 1, There are always more and more new people joining the scene and the forum interested in urban art and MW is nice easy entry point, wall friendly tick, shows graffiti tick, not too expensive tick etc.
Then after a year or two they realise it's shallow and meaningless and sell it for a loss.
And the cycle continues.
Fair play he's made some cash but I do wonder if he'd sell anything without this forum.

Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by John The Badgers on Jan 23, 2017 20:07:06 GMT 1, Certainly like Martins work, but looking forward to something a little different? Enjoyed owning a few prints with the tagging, but the only one I now own is the mini chinooks one, which I have always really enjoyed, and a cracking print. So a bit of diversity away from the current format would be a top move I reckon.

Lot's of great info from everyone and I am learning a lot (hopefully).
Just thought I would pose a question though...I see a handful of comments about how people think his "tagging" in the prints are <yawn>.
What is everyone's opinion about "Sad Rainbow"? Good/bad/in-between?
Anywho...just thought I would say hi.

Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by niss on Apr 19, 2017 20:58:34 GMT 1, I'm trying to get my behind the curtain print framed and could use some input!
I was going to go with an old school/ornamented frame in silver or gold with a white passepartout but couldn't make up my mind when I was at the framer. The four below are the ones that I liked the most - esp. the two on the right.
Has anyone gotten theirs framed yet? Any other ideas for frames that might look awesome?

I would go simple black, white or maybe grey frame with hardly any border. Maybe these would suit the ap version, but I don't think any of the ones pictured go with the standard version. Framing is a personal thing though, so go with what you like.

Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by avec art on Apr 19, 2017 21:17:14 GMT 1, I'd go for the bottom right, because it's a playful juxtaposition or contrast of styles, which is why it works well in the insta pic a few posts up. I don't think it matters that it's not the fancy version. Boarder is fine, although I might opt to have it float mounted instead of passepartout.

I think the point he was making is that the "fancy version" uses a background painting image that would likely go in an ornate frame if it was the entire image. The non painting one doesn't have as much of a tie to that type of art, and thus, less of a juxtaposition.

Yep, exactly that. The ig picture of the ornate framed one is just a mock-up and can't actually be done without trimming the border or hiding it behind a thick frame. Don't get why the variant wasn't a full bleed like the standard, very odd.

Floating would be awesome but i gotta check if they can do it with every frame... the last two prints i got framed there were in a standard size while this has to be custom made.

You can't really see in the photo but it is floating pretty high and looks great.

Martin Whatson • Still Life 2 Print, by avec art on Apr 20, 2017 13:30:14 GMT 1, sorry if I've offended anyone's sensibilities by calling the (ap?) version of the print a 'fancy version', I just don't have enough knowledge about the print to know what the correct term for it is, so I used an expression where I'd be understood.
I know the insta, is a mock up, but it doesn't take away from the effect the ornate frame gives, and I realise that it doesn't perhaps have quite the same impact as marrying the classical aspect of the image with an ornate frame, but I still don't think it matters. In a box frame I think this print looks a little ... well dry. This is just my uninformed opinion that I felt I could like to offer. It's kinda beyond me why people are so prickly on here sometimes, it's just a discussion, I don't think anyone is even selling anything.
